0:00 The man who took the most famous photograph of World War Two, Joe Rosenthal, almost missed the shot entirely.0:08 He was busy piling up sandbags and rocks to stand on for a better angle.0:13 Wait, really?0:14 For THAT photo?0:15 He was… building a little podium?0:17 He was.0:18 And it's a perfect example of what we talked about with Dorothea Lange's 'Migrant Mother'—the photographer is often the last person to know they’ve captured history.0:30 The camera just sees what’s in front of it.0:33 The meaning comes later.0:35 So what exactly was in front of it?0:38 I think we all just assume we know the story.0:41 It’s the symbol of victory on Iwo Jima.0:44 Right, but the reality on Mount Suribachi that day—February 23rd, 1945—was just chaos.0:50 A group of Marines had already fought their way to the summit hours earlier and raised a small American flag.0:58 A very small one.1:00 Hold on.1:00 So Rosenthal’s photo… it’s not the first flag?1:04 Not at all.1:04 It’s the replacement.1:06 The first flag was too small to be seen from down below.1:10 So a second, much larger flag was sent up.1:13 As six guys started to hoist this new one, Rosenthal, who'd been distracted, just turned, raised his camera, and fired.1:22 He didn’t even use the viewfinder.1:25 One shot.1:25 That’s incredible.1:27 It’s pure luck.1:28 It's always a bit of luck.1:30 The photo was on newspaper front pages less than two days later.1:34 It won the Pulitzer Prize that same year.1:37 But here’s the part that gets lost.1:40 Three of the six men in that photograph never saw the acclaim.1:45 They were killed in action on Iwo Jima before the battle was even over.1:50 Oh, wow.1:50 I had no idea.1:51 Who… who were they?1:53 Five Marines and a Navy corpsman.1:55 Harlon Block, Franklin Sousley, and Rene Gagnon were three of them.2:00 Block and Sousley died on Iwo Jima.2:03 The others were Ira Hayes, Harold Keller, and a man we thought for seventy years was John Bradley.2:10 What do you mean, a man we thought was John Bradley?2:14 This is where the story gets complicated.2:17 For decades, the world believed Navy Pharmacist’s Mate John Bradley was the figure in the middle.2:24 His son even wrote a best-selling book, Flags of Our Fathers.2:29 But amateur historians started noticing discrepancies.2:33 Discrepancies in the photo?2:35 After all this time?2:36 Yeah, things like the way the uniform bloused, the gear he was carrying.2:41 It didn't quite match.2:43 So in 2016, the Marine Corps did a full review.2:47 They looked at film footage shot by another combat photographer, a Sergeant named Bill Genaust—who was also killed on Iwo Jima, by the way.2:57 My god.2:57 And they concluded… it wasn’t John Bradley.3:01 It was another Marine, Harold Schultz.3:03 He’d apparently known the whole time and just… never said anything.3:08 Lived a quiet life and died without the world knowing he was in that picture.3:14 So the most famous war photograph in American history had the wrong guy identified for seventy years?3:21 How does that happen?3:23 Fog of war, you know?3:25 And then the story becomes bigger than the men in it.3:29 The image was immediately used for a war bond drive that raised twenty-six BILLION dollars.3:35 It became the blueprint for the Marine Corps War Memorial.3:40 The symbol became more important than the facts.3:43 So the controversy wasn't that it was staged, which was the old rumor.3:48 The real controversy was that we just got the names wrong.3:53 Exactly.3:53 And to the Marine Corps' credit, the Commandant at the time, General Robert Neller, said, “Our history is important to us, and we have a responsibility to ensure it’s right.” I respect that.4:07 But he also said something else that I think is the real heart of it.4:12 He said in his mind, all the Marines who fought to get a flag up on that mountain could be considered 'flag raisers.' Mm-hm.4:21 The act was bigger than any one person.4:24 Right.4:25 Rosenthal himself always downplayed his role.4:28 He'd say, "The Marines took Iwo Jima, I just took the picture." And he was right.4:34 The photo isn't about the six men, or even about Joe Rosenthal.4:39 It’s about the 70,000 who fought there, and the thousands who never came home.4:45 The picture just gave that sacrifice a face.4:48 A shape.4:48 Even if it took us a lifetime to learn all their names.
