0:00 Have you ever looked at a photograph, a famous one, and felt like it wasn’t telling you the whole truth?0:09 Mm-hmm.0:09 I reckon every picture leaves something out.0:13 That’s the nature of a single moment caught in a box.0:18 It is.0:18 Last week we were talking about that girl with the green eyes, the Afghan Girl, and the life she lived that was a world away from the magazine cover.0:31 Well, there’s another face, a mother’s face from our own side of the water, that tells a similar story.0:40 A story of what happens after the camera goes away.0:45 Oh, I know the one you’re fixing to talk about.0:49 The woman from the Depression, with the children hiding their faces on her shoulders.0:56 Looks like she’s carrying the weight of the whole world.1:01 The very one.1:02 Pull your chair in closer now.1:05 The rain is beating on the windows something fierce tonight.1:10 The year was nineteen thirty-six.1:13 A wet, miserable March in California.1:16 A photographer named Dorothea Lange was driving home, tired to the bone.1:23 That’s right.1:24 She’d been on the road for a month, taking pictures for the government.1:30 Documenting the farm workers.1:33 She saw a handmade sign that said "Pea-Pickers Camp," and, you know, she just drove right on by.1:41 She was done for the day.1:43 She was.1:44 But something… something pulled at her.1:47 She said later it was like a magnet.1:50 She argued with herself for twenty miles down that muddy road.1:56 Twenty miles.1:57 And then she turned that car around.2:00 Drove back to that sign and into a camp of about twenty-five hundred starving people.2:08 Starving is the word.2:09 A freeze had come and destroyed the pea crop.2:13 There was no work.2:15 No food.2:16 Just people huddled in tents made of rags and old tires.2:20 And in the middle of it all, she saw her.2:24 A woman in a lean-to, with her children.2:28 Florence Owens Thompson.2:30 Thirty-two years old.2:31 And Lange said she just walked up to her, like she was drawn there.2:37 She didn't ask a lot of questions.2:40 Just learned they'd been living on frozen vegetables from the fields and birds the children had killed.2:49 The woman had just sold the tires off her car to buy food.2:54 Imagine.2:55 Dorothea took out her big camera, a Graflex.2:59 She only made… what was it, Earl?3:02 Six pictures?3:03 Six exposures in about ten minutes.3:06 That's all.3:07 She started wide, then got closer, and closer, until she got that one picture.3:14 The one we all know.3:16 The mother's face, worried, looking past the camera.3:20 The two children hiding.3:22 The baby in her lap.3:24 And here is the part of the story that the photograph can't tell you.3:30 The part that matters.3:32 Dorothea Lange never asked the woman for her name.3:36 Nope.3:37 Never did.3:38 For more than FORTY years, she was just "Migrant Mother." She was a symbol.3:44 She wasn't a person.3:46 And that picture… whoo, boy, that picture went everywhere.3:51 It showed the whole country the face of the Great Depression.3:56 The government rushed twenty thousand pounds of food to that camp right after the pictures were published.4:06 So the picture did good.4:08 But the woman… Florence… she and her children had already moved on.4:14 They never got any of that food.4:16 They never saw a penny from that photograph, not ever.4:21 And when a reporter finally found her in the nineteen-seventies, living in a trailer park, you know what she said?4:31 She said she wished that photograph had never been taken.4:36 Well, would you believe it.4:38 Swear on my tackle box.4:40 She said she felt ashamed of it.4:43 She said it made her family look like… like pitiful, helpless people.4:49 And they weren't.4:51 She was a proud woman, Maeve.4:53 Full-blooded Cherokee.4:55 She worked her whole life — picked cotton, worked in hospitals, whatever it took to feed her ten kids.5:04 God rest her, she sounds like half the women I knew growing up.5:10 Tough as whitethorn.5:11 So the picture that made her famous was a kind of a lie, in her mind.5:17 It was a lie of omission, I'd say.5:20 It showed her at her absolute lowest moment, and froze her there forever.5:27 It didn't show the part where she got up the next day, and the day after that, and kept her family together through it all.5:38 And that, pet, is the God's honest truth.5:41 A photograph captures a second, but a life is made of millions of them.5:47 She wasn't just a migrant mother.5:50 She was Florence Owens Thompson.5:53 And her children said she was a fighter.5:57 That she was.5:58 When she passed on in eighty-three, her kids had a headstone made.6:03 It says: "FLORENCE LEONA THOMPSON.6:06 Migrant Mother – A Legend of the Strength of American Motherhood." Ah, now that's grand.6:14 They gave her back her name, and her story.6:18 Sure look, what can you do.6:20 The fire's burning low.6:22 Time we were all getting to our rest.
