They stood in silence for a moment, the only sounds the thrum of the engine and the cry of a distant gull.1:40 "So what does a man in a suit do on the islands?" Clara asked, her tone light, but her eyes were… analytical.1:49 "Banking?1:50 Real estate?" "Clerk," he lied.1:53 The word felt foreign in his mouth.1:56 "Records." "Ah." She smiled, a small, knowing thing.2:00 "Lots of paper.2:02 I bet your hands get tired." He instinctively curled his fingers into his palm.2:09 He’d spent the last week scrubbing them, trying to erase the evidence of his real life.2:16 The callouses on his fingertips were almost gone.2:21 ALMOST.2:21 But she was looking right at them.2:24 "What about you?" he asked, trying to shift the focus.2:29 "Me?" she said, turning to lean her back against the railing, facing him now.2:36 "I look for things.2:38 Things that are lost." A cold dread, sharp and familiar, pricked at his neck.2:44 He kept his face neutral.2:47 Blank.2:47 It was a skill he’d had to learn.2:50 "Like antiques?" "Sometimes," she said.2:54 Her gaze was unwavering.2:56 "Sometimes… people." The air grew thick.2:59 Heavy.3:00 The other passengers seemed miles away, ghostly figures in the fog.3:06 It was just the two of them, suspended between the land he’d fled and the island that was supposed to be his sanctuary.3:16 He could feel his heart beating a frantic, panicked rhythm against his ribs.3:23 She took a small step closer.3:25 "It’s brave, what you’re doing.3:28 Starting over." He didn't breathe.3:31 She continued, her voice barely audible over the engine's drone.3:37 "It takes courage.3:38 Especially after what happened with the orchestra in Vienna." His blood went cold.3:46 Vienna.3:46 The word struck him like a physical blow.3:50 He hadn’t told ANYONE.3:52 The people who had arranged this trip… they had promised him total anonymity.3:59 A clean slate.4:00 He didn't flinch — he couldn't afford to — but something inside him shattered.4:07 He finally met her eyes.4:09 The blank mask was gone.4:11 In its place was raw, unfiltered fear.4:14 He didn't ask her how she knew.4:17 He didn't have to.4:19 The only question that mattered was written all over his face.4:24 Who ARE you?4:25 Clara just held his gaze, her expression unreadable.4:30 The ferry plowed onward through the endless grey, carrying a secret that was no longer his alone.
