0:00 The little red jacket went into the industrial-sized washer all by itself.0:07 Last week, we talked about secrets buried deep in the soil.0:13 Sometimes, they aren’t buried at all.0:16 Sometimes, they’re just waiting to be washed clean.0:21 The laundromat smelled of bleach and ozone and the damp, clean scent of strangers’ lives.0:30 It was almost two in the morning.0:33 Maya was folding her last load of towels, still warm from the dryer.0:40 The rhythmic slosh and spin of the machines was a kind of late-night lullaby.0:48 Then the door chimed.0:50 A man walked in, and he didn’t belong.0:54 Not here.0:55 Not at this hour.0:56 He was wearing a crisp button-down shirt, dark slacks.1:02 He looked like he’d just left an office, not like someone who’d run out of clean socks.1:10 He wasn't carrying a basket, or a bag.1:14 Just the jacket.1:16 It was tiny.1:17 Toddler-sized.1:18 Bright, cherry red.1:20 He didn't look at Maya.1:22 He walked to the biggest machine, the one meant for comforters and sleeping bags, and pushed the little jacket inside.1:34 It looked impossibly small in the vast metal drum.1:39 He fed a stream of quarters into the slot.1:43 The sound echoed in the quiet room.1:46 Clink.1:47 Clink.1:48 Clink.1:48 He poured in a careful measure of soap, then leaned his forehead against the cool glass of the door as the water began to rush in.2:01 Maya kept folding.2:03 A towel.2:04 A t-shirt.2:05 A pair of jeans.2:06 But she was watching him in the reflection of the machine opposite hers.2:13 His shoulders were tight.2:16 His hands were jammed in his pockets.2:20 He smelled faintly of pine needles and damp earth.2:24 Strange, for a man dressed for a boardroom.2:29 He never moved.2:30 Just stood there, a statue, for the entire thirty-two-minute wash cycle.2:37 When the final spin shuddered to a halt, he opened the door with a reverence that felt… wrong.2:47 He lifted the dripping jacket out like it was made of spun glass.2:53 He held it up to the harsh fluorescent light, turning it over and over.3:00 There was a dark smudge on the sleeve she hadn’t noticed before.3:06 Now, it was gone.3:08 A sound escaped him.3:10 Not a sob.3:11 More like a sigh that had gotten lost on its way out.3:16 Relief, maybe.3:18 But his face was a mask of absolute devastation.3:22 He carried the wet jacket to an empty folding table.3:28 He didn’t put it in a dryer.3:30 He just… folded it.3:32 Carefully.3:33 Perfectly.3:34 The tiny sleeves crossed over the chest.3:38 As he turned to leave, something white fluttered from his pocket and landed face-down on the linoleum floor.3:49 “Sir,” Maya said, her voice quiet.3:52 “You dropped this.” She picked it up.3:56 It was a laminated card.3:58 She turned it over.4:00 It was a missing child announcement.4:04 A little girl with bright eyes and a wide, toothy grin.4:09 She was wearing a cherry red jacket.4:13 The man stopped, his back to her.4:16 He turned around so slowly.4:19 His eyes met hers for the first time, and they were hollowed out.4:25 He walked back, took the card from her outstretched hand, his fingers brushing hers for a fraction of a second.4:36 They were ice cold.4:38 “Thank you,” he whispered.4:41 And then he was gone.4:43 Leaving Maya alone with the hum of the machines, and the ghost of a little red jacket that was finally, terribly, clean.
