About this episode
Explaining the origins of everything—so clearly a kid gets it, and so deeply a physicist smiles
0:00
Every single atom in your body—the carbon, the oxygen, everything—was once squeezed into a space smaller than a single grain of sand.
0:10
And that point contained all the energy, all the matter, all of everything that would ever become the entire universe.
0:19
We talked last time about how gravity can literally bend time, but this story is about the very beginning of time itself.
0:28
So let's get into it.
0:29
The Big Bang.
0:30
I feel like everyone's heard the name, but my mental image is just a giant cosmic firework.
0:37
Is that...
0:38
even close?
0:39
It's the image everyone has!
0:41
But it's also the single biggest misunderstanding.
0:45
The Big Bang wasn't an explosion in space, like a bomb going off in a big empty room.
0:51
It was the expansion of space itself.
0:54
Hold on—the expansion of space?
0:56
What does that even mean?
0:58
Think of it like this.
1:00
Imagine you have a balloon with a bunch of dots drawn on it.
1:04
Now, as you blow up the balloon, what happens to the dots?
1:09
They all move away from each other.
1:11
Exactly!
1:12
Are the dots running around on the surface of the balloon?
1:16
No.
1:17
The rubber of the balloon—the space between them—is stretching, carrying the dots along for the ride.
1:24
The galaxies are the dots, and the fabric of spacetime is the balloon.
1:30
Okay, that helps.
1:31
A lot.
1:31
So it wasn't a bang, it was a...
1:34
stretch?
1:34
A universal inflation.
1:36
A very, very, VERY rapid one.
1:38
From a point of unimaginable heat and density, space itself started expanding everywhere, all at once.
1:46
And it's still going.
1:47
Which is the first piece of evidence, right?
1:51
The fact that we can see it happening?
1:54
Precisely.
1:54
In the 1920s, an astronomer named Edwin Hubble noticed something incredible.
2:00
He saw that almost every galaxy he could see was moving away from us.
2:05
And the farther away a galaxy was, the faster it was moving away.
2:10
That's the balloon!
2:12
The dots farthest away from you on the balloon move the fastest when you blow it up!
2:18
You've got it!
2:19
It’s the perfect proof.
2:21
If you run the movie backward—if everything is flying apart now—it means that long ago, everything must have been incredibly close together.
2:32
Okay, so that's clue number one.
2:34
The expanding universe.
2:36
But that feels like running a movie backward.
2:39
It's a great theory, but is there any...
2:42
leftover physical proof?
2:44
Like a cosmic crime scene?
2:46
Oh, there is.
2:47
And it's my favorite part of the story.
2:50
It's called the Cosmic Microwave Background.
2:53
Or the CMB.
2:54
Sounds...
2:55
technical.
2:55
It's the afterglow of creation!
2:58
Think about it: if the early universe was unbelievably hot and dense, it must have been glowing white-hot, right?
3:06
Like the inside of a star.
3:08
Sure, that makes sense.
3:10
As space expanded, that light got stretched out with it.
3:14
The wavelength of the light got longer and longer and longer over billions of years, until it wasn't visible light anymore.
3:24
It became microwaves.
3:25
And in 1965, two scientists, Arno Penzias and Robert Wilson, accidentally discovered it.
3:32
Wait, accidentally?
3:33
They were building a super-sensitive radio antenna and they kept picking up this faint, persistent hiss.
3:41
It came from every direction, day and night.
3:44
They thought it was pigeon droppings on the antenna!
3:48
They cleaned it all off, and the hiss was still there.
3:53
No way.
3:53
It turned out they had found the oldest light in the universe.
3:58
That faint hiss was the echo of the Big Bang, still ringing through the cosmos 13.8 billion years later.
4:06
So we're literally soaking in the leftover heat from the beginning of time, right now.
4:12
Every second of every day.
4:14
It's the ultimate evidence.
4:16
We see the expansion, and we feel the warmth it left behind.
4:21
We are living inside the evidence.
4:23
That is just...
4:24
so much bigger than a simple firework.
4:27
It means that when you look up at the night sky, you're not just looking out into space.
4:34
You're looking back in time.
4:36
All the way back.
4:37
And the wildest part is that the light from the most distant galaxies we can see has been traveling for so long, we're seeing them as they were when the universe was just a baby.
4:51
So what does it feel like to know you're made of the same stuff that was there at the very beginning of everything?
