0:00 One hundred thousand young people flooded into San Francisco in the summer of 1967.0:06 They came with little more than a backpack and a belief that something new was possible.0:13 Last week, in our seventh episode, we talked about the untold stories that shaped this city.0:20 Well, this story was told around the world, but the why of it… the part that explains how a single neighborhood became the epicenter of a global youthquake… that’s the story that’s still worth telling.0:35 It didn't start in the summer.0:38 It started in the cold of January, in Golden Gate Park, with an event called the Human Be-In.0:45 It was a "gathering of the tribes." The Beat poets of the last generation, like Allen Ginsberg, stood alongside the new psychedelic leaders like Timothy Leary.0:57 They told a generation to "turn on, tune in, and drop out." And a national media, hungry for a story, amplified the message.1:07 The invitation was sent.1:08 Come to San Francisco.1:10 Wear flowers in your hair.1:12 So they came.1:13 They came to a small, twenty-five-block neighborhood of aging Victorian houses called the Haight-Ashbury.1:21 It was already a bohemian enclave, home to bands you know… the Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Janis Joplin.1:30 But the summer of '67 turned it into something else entirely.1:35 A living social experiment.1:37 You had the Diggers, a theatrical anarchist group, providing free food in the Panhandle every day.1:44 Free medical clinics opened to deal with everything from bad drug trips to basic healthcare.1:51 The music wasn't just on stage at the Fillmore; it was spilling out of open windows and into free concerts in the park.2:00 It was a culture built on sharing, on rejecting the materialism of their parents' generation.2:08 For a few brief months, it felt like a utopia was being willed into existence.2:14 But where have we seen this before?2:16 A mass migration of young dreamers to San Francisco, chasing a promise of reinvention and wealth.2:24 It happened a little over a century earlier.2:27 We just called it the Gold Rush.2:30 Then, they came for material riches buried in the hills.2:34 In 1967, they came for a different kind of gold.2:38 A spiritual, cultural, and communal wealth.2:41 And here’s where the analogy holds.2:44 In both cases, the city was completely overwhelmed.2:48 The Haight couldn't handle the influx.2:51 The beautiful, idealistic dream began to fray at the edges.2:55 Overcrowding, drug problems, and homelessness became rampant.3:00 The media that had built the myth now turned to exploit it, sending tour buses through the neighborhood to gawk at the "hippies." The summer's bright promise was burning out.3:13 By October, the original organizers held a mock funeral.3:18 They carried a coffin through the streets with a banner that read "The Death of the Hippie." So what was the point of it all?3:27 Was it just a failed experiment?3:30 No.3:30 The Summer of Love wasn't an ending; it was a beginning.3:34 It permanently encoded counter-culture into San Francisco's DNA.3:39 The ideals of communal living, environmental consciousness, and social justice didn't die with that mock funeral.3:48 They spread.3:49 They laid the groundwork for the anti-war movement, the women's liberation movement, and the gay rights movement that would soon find its most powerful voice right here.4:02 That brief, intense summer created a beacon.4:05 It established San Francisco, in the mind of the world, as a place of refuge for the different.4:12 A city on the edge of the continent, and the edge of what’s next.
