0:00 A safety net suspended beneath the Golden Gate Bridge during its construction saved the lives of nineteen men.0:09 They called themselves the "Halfway to Hell Club." Last week we talked about the seismic shifts that defined San Francisco's history, and the Golden Gate Bridge was a seismic shift in steel.0:25 It was a one-point-seven-mile act of defiance against geology, economics, and common sense.0:32 Before the bridge, San Francisco was a dead end.0:36 A beautiful, vibrant, but ultimately isolated city, hemmed in by water on three sides.0:43 To get to the north, you took a ferry.0:47 A slow, often fog-choked ferry.0:49 The dream of a bridge across the Golden Gate strait was just that—a dream.0:55 The channel was a mile wide.0:58 The winds hit seventy miles per hour.1:01 The currents could rip a ship apart.1:04 And the ground itself… well, this is San Francisco.1:08 Nothing is ever truly stable.1:10 The man who said he could do it was Joseph Strauss.1:15 An engineer from Cincinnati.1:17 A poet on the side.1:19 His specialty was small, functional drawbridges.1:23 He was not a suspension bridge guy.1:26 His first design was a clunky, ugly thing that the public immediately hated.1:32 But Strauss was a promoter.1:34 A bulldog.1:35 He spent a decade fighting.1:37 Fighting politicians.1:39 Fighting the War Department, who feared a collapsed bridge could block the bay.1:46 Fighting the ferry companies, who stood to lose everything and spent millions on a smear campaign against the project.1:55 He fought for ten years just to get permission to start.2:00 Then came the real obstacle.2:02 The money.2:03 It was 1930.2:04 The Great Depression was strangling the country.2:08 The project would cost thirty-five million dollars.2:13 An impossible sum.2:14 The federal government said no.2:17 So Strauss and his allies went to the people.2:20 They asked the voters of the six counties in the new Bridge District to do something radical.2:28 They asked them to put their own homes, their farms, their businesses up as collateral for the bonds.2:37 To personally guarantee the debt of a bridge that experts swore could not be built.2:43 And in November 1930, they said yes.2:46 The engineering was a quiet drama of its own.2:50 Strauss, the frontman, knew his limits.2:54 He hired the best minds in the country.2:57 Leon Moisseiff, the brilliant theorist.3:00 Irving Morrow, the architect who gave the bridge its soaring Art Deco lines and its iconic International Orange color—a color he chose to complement the hills and contrast with the sea and sky.3:16 And Charles Alton Ellis, a quiet professor who did the brutal, brain-breaking math.3:23 For months, Ellis worked himself to the bone, checking and re-checking every calculation for the towers and the massive cables.3:34 Strauss, paranoid and insecure, fired him just before construction began and did everything he could to scrub his name from the project's history.3:46 But the real story was written in the air, a thousand feet above the water.3:52 For the men building it, this was the most dangerous job in the world.3:58 The rule of thumb for high-steel work at the time was one fatality for every million dollars spent.4:06 Strauss refused to accept that.4:09 He made hard hats mandatory, a first in America.4:13 He installed glare-free goggles.4:16 He even had a special diet shipped to the site to help workers fight dizziness.4:22 And then there was the net.4:24 A one-hundred-thirty-thousand-dollar safety innovation.4:29 It gave the men confidence.4:31 They worked faster, better.4:33 It saved nineteen lives.4:35 Until February seventeenth, 1937.4:38 A section of scaffolding fell, overloaded with concrete.4:43 It tore through the net like paper.4:46 Ten men plunged into the freezing water below.4:50 The Halfway to Hell club had just lost ten members.4:54 When the bridge opened three months later, it was more than a roadway.5:00 It was a survivor.5:01 It was completed ahead of schedule and one point three million dollars under budget.5:08 In the darkest decade of the twentieth century, San Francisco had built a monument not to the past, but to the future.5:18 It proved that even when the world is falling apart, you can still build something beautiful.5:26 Something that lasts.5:28 The Golden Gate Bridge isn't just a symbol of San Francisco.5:33 It’s a symbol of what people can do when they refuse to be told what’s impossible.
