0:00 The sculptures of women perched atop the colonnades at the Palace of Fine Arts are called the "weeping ladies." They were designed to evoke a feeling of quiet, solemn sadness.0:16 Last week, we went looking for magic in the city's misty corners; today, we're finding it in a place built to house sorrow itself.0:28 I come here on days when the city feels too loud.0:32 When the future feels too fast.0:35 You know those days.0:37 You walk under the great rotunda, and the sound of the Marina traffic just… fades.0:44 The air inside the dome feels older.0:48 Thicker.0:48 It’s a place designed to look like a ruin from a forgotten empire, right here in San Francisco.0:57 A beautiful, intentional decay.1:00 I was standing by the lagoon the other day, watching the swans.1:06 The sun was hitting the dome just right, that late afternoon gold.1:12 And I heard something.1:14 Under the hum of a distant plane, there was music.1:19 Faint.1:19 A string quartet, maybe.1:21 And the murmur of a crowd.1:24 I looked around.1:25 A few tourists, a wedding photographer.1:29 No party.1:30 No orchestra.1:31 I shook my head, blamed the wind.1:34 But the feeling pulled me in, toward the columns.1:38 I ran my hand over the stone.1:41 It’s not the original from 1915, you know.1:45 This whole place was rebuilt in the sixties from concrete, a permanent copy of a temporary dream.1:54 But as I touched it… the light shifted.1:58 For just a second, the reflection in the lagoon wasn't of joggers and Teslas.2:05 It was women in long white dresses and men in straw hats, strolling the promenade.2:12 A shimmer, like heat off asphalt, but it smelled of saltwater and perfume from a century ago.2:21 It was gone before I could even gasp.2:24 So I did the only thing that made sense.2:28 I walked to the very center of the rotunda, directly under the highest point of the dome.2:36 I stood on the seal, closed my eyes, and just… listened.2:41 Not with my ears.2:43 But with that other sense.2:45 The one that feels the history in a place.2:49 At first, nothing.2:51 Just the pigeons and the breeze.2:54 Then, a thought that wasn't mine bloomed in the quiet.2:59 A whisper that wasn't sound.3:01 The mortality of grandeur.3:04 The vanity of human wishes.3:06 It was the architect's intention.3:09 Bernard Maybeck.3:11 He wanted this place to feel like a beautiful tragedy.3:16 A monument to the idea that even the greatest things… end.3:21 And in that moment, I felt it.3:24 The profound, heartbreaking sadness he poured into the design.3:29 The sorrow of creating something magnificent, knowing it was built to crumble.3:37 But here's the turn.3:39 Here’s the magic.3:40 I opened my eyes, and the feeling… changed.3:44 That deep sadness was still there, but it was edged with something else.3:51 Defiance.3:52 This Palace was supposed to be a memory.3:55 A temporary stage set.3:57 It was meant to fall apart, to teach us a lesson about letting go.4:03 But San Francisco refused.4:06 We saw this beautiful, sad thing, and we said, no.4:10 We will NOT let you go.4:12 We raised money.4:14 We poured concrete.4:16 We made a ghost permanent.4:18 The weeping ladies on the columns… I don't think they’re weeping for a lost Roman past.4:26 They're not crying for what’s gone.4:29 They're weeping with relief.4:32 For the beauty of a present that was never, ever supposed to exist.4:38 This place isn't a portal to a forgotten history.4:43 It's a monument to the city’s stubborn, loving heart.
