0:00 A 30-year-old founder just posted that after two years of working 10 to 12 hour days, completely alone, he still has zero paying users and zero funding.0:10 This isn't a story about failure...0:12 not yet.0:13 It’s a dispatch from the brutal, unlit space between an idea and a business, and it’s the most honest thing you’ll see on the internet all week.0:22 The subreddit is r/startups, and this one post from a user named StarvingEngine is basically the ghost of Silicon Valley future, present, and past, all at once.0:33 It’s a story about the grind, but it’s also a story about what happens when the grind is all you have left.0:40 This is the part of the hero’s journey they tend to skip in the biographies.0:45 Alright, so what else is the hivemind of r/startups obsessing over?0:49 It’s not just one guy’s soul-baring post.0:52 The entire subreddit is a chaotic, contradictory ecosystem of hope and despair, and you can see the same patterns playing out that you see everywhere else online.1:03 First, there’s the constant, low-grade war over feedback.1:07 Founders post their landing pages, their logos, their big ideas, begging for critique.1:13 But the responses are...1:14 well, they're from the internet.1:16 It reminds me of a thread I saw on r/gamedev, where indie developers were debating whether Reddit feedback is even useful.1:24 One user, PolygonMyth, just nailed it.1:27 They said, "Some people just want to tear other people down — like, for fun or something." And you see that on r/startups constantly.1:36 Is the person telling you your idea is doomed a seasoned expert offering tough love, or just some rando getting a cheap thrill?1:44 The founder has to decide, and deciding wrong could be fatal.1:48 Then you have the problem of community policing.1:52 Every online space eventually has to deal with this.1:55 On the science subreddit r/labrats, the moderators are currently on a crusade against AI-generated content and solicitation.2:03 They posted a notice saying there’s been a huge uptick in people using AI to churn out low-quality posts, or trying to disguise their marketing as a request for help.2:14 The mod, nomorobbo, was blunt: "You cannot use the subreddit to solicit for any reason, free, feedback, paid, or anything in the middle." It's the exact same dynamic on r/startups.2:26 The line between "sharing my journey" and "please click my link so my metrics go up" is incredibly thin, and the community has to constantly fend off the grifters.2:37 It’s a battle for authenticity.2:39 And that battle gets even uglier when you look at the competition.2:44 The startup world loves to talk about disruption and hockey-stick growth, but on the ground, it can feel more like a knife fight in a dark alley.2:54 It’s a perfect mirror of the gamer subreddits, actually.2:57 Over on r/duneawakening, the community is tearing itself apart over "griefing"—that’s where high-level players just repeatedly kill new players for sport.3:08 It’s not about a fair fight.3:09 One user, syn_vamp, put it perfectly: "These fuckers don't like 'PvP' they like ganking people who never get to react." That’s the startup equivalent of a massive corporation seeing a cool new app, copying it, and then using their billion-dollar marketing budget to bury the original.3:28 It’s not competition.3:30 It’s extermination.3:31 It's the same impulse, whether you're on a fictional desert planet or in a real-world board room.3:37 Some people just want to watch the world burn, or at least, watch your startup burn.3:43 Finally, there’s the emotional rollercoaster.3:46 The entire subreddit runs on it.3:48 One day, the top post is "We just hit 100k ARR!" The next, it's our guy StarvingEngine.3:54 It’s pure market sentiment, but for peoples' souls.3:57 It’s like the r/investing subreddit watching the CNN Fear and Greed Index.4:02 One user there, oddMahnsta, was talking about the index moving from "Extreme Fear" back to just "Fear." That tiny shift, from a score of 22 into the 30s, is enough to change the entire conversation.4:16 For a founder, that happens ten times a day.4:19 A good email?4:19 Greed.4:20 A server crash?4:21 Extreme Fear.4:22 The entire subreddit is a public display of these violent swings, and reading it feels like watching a thousand different emotional stock tickers at once.4:32 So let’s go back to that one post.4:34 The one from StarvingEngine.4:36 Because all those other themes—the feedback, the rules, the griefing, the fear—they all converge right there, in his story.4:44 He’s an electrical engineering grad.4:47 Thirty years old.4:48 For two solid years, he’s been building.4:51 Alone.4:51 He says he started by "pumping boatloads of software work" into his idea.4:56 Ten, twelve hours a day.4:57 The result?4:58 In his words: "multiple psychological breakdowns, self doubt, and nobody around to feel this pain with me." This is the confession.5:07 This is the moment the curated Instagram-story version of entrepreneurship completely shatters.5:13 Nobody posts this on LinkedIn.5:15 Nobody puts this in their pitch deck.5:18 This is the raw log file of trying to will something into existence.5:22 And here’s the part that really gets me.5:25 After all that… two years of isolation and breakdowns… he has no paying users.5:30 No funding.5:31 By any conventional metric, he is failing.5:34 Spectacularly.5:35 But then he writes this one sentence: "I know I have something good here.5:39 It just needs to be refined and correctly placed in the market." That.5:44 That right there is the kernel of the whole thing.5:47 It’s the irrational, unshakeable, maybe even delusional belief that is the absolute prerequisite for starting anything.5:55 It’s the part that venture capitalists are actually trying to bottle and sell.6:01 It’s the part that separates the dreamer from the builder.6:04 And where have we seen this before?6:07 Everywhere.6:08 This is the story of Philo Farnsworth, sketching the idea for a television on a blackboard while he was still a teenager in rural Utah.6:17 It’s the story of every scientist running the same failed experiment for the thousandth time, convinced the theory is right.6:25 It’s the story of a novelist on page 400 of a book nobody has asked for and nobody may ever read.6:31 It's the archetype of the lonely creator.6:34 But here’s where the analogy breaks down.6:37 The modern startup founder isn't just an inventor in a garage.6:41 They exist inside a specific, hyper-capitalist framework that demands not just invention, but scale.6:48 And speed.6:48 And a total addressable market.6:50 The pressure isn’t just to build a better mousetrap; it’s to build a mousetrap that can become a global subscription service with a billion-dollar valuation inside of five years.7:02 That context adds a layer of psychological strain that is uniquely modern.7:07 The isolation is the same, but the finish line keeps getting moved further away, and it has a dollar sign on it.7:15 And the community’s reaction to his post is the final act.7:18 Do they grief him?7:20 Do they tear him down for fun?7:22 Or do they offer help?7:23 For the most part… they help.7:25 People offered code reviews.7:27 Marketing advice.7:28 But mostly, they offered solidarity.7:30 They shared their own stories of being in that same dark place.7:35 The subreddit, for a moment, stopped being a place for feedback or self-promotion and became a support group.7:42 It became a mirror.7:43 Because every single person on that forum is, or has been, one bad month away from being StarvingEngine.7:50 They all know what it feels like to be staring at the abyss of their own creation, holding onto nothing but the belief that they have something good.8:00 What this week on r/startups really sets up is a look at the community's true function.8:06 It’s not a business incubator.8:08 It’s not an accelerator.8:10 It’s a collective exercise in managing despair.8:13 The advice, the success stories, the flame wars—they are all secondary.8:17 The primary function of the space is for hundreds of thousands of people, most of whom are working alone, to feel, for a moment, like they aren't.8:27 They are all watching each other's emotional stock tickers, and sometimes, just knowing someone else is in "Extreme Fear" with you is all the capital you need to survive another day.8:39 The real product being built on r/startups isn't another SaaS tool.8:44 It's mass-produced, crowd-sourced, brutally honest hope.
