0:00 A post titled ‘My Co-founder Just Pushed Me Out After We Hit a Million in ARR’ got over four thousand upvotes and a thousand comments on r/startups this week.0:11 And what’s wild is that if you just search the subreddit, you’ll find a nearly identical post from eight months ago, and another one from two years before that.0:24 Last week, we talked about the burnout and buyout drama that happens when startups are on the edge.0:31 This week, we're looking at the prequel—the moments where the cracks form, and how the community talks about them, over and over and over again.0:42 It’s a lesson in patterns, and how few of them we ever manage to break.0:47 If you spend enough time in that subreddit, you start to see the matrix.0:53 It’s not a forum for new ideas.0:55 It’s a proving ground for old ones.0:58 The same handful of existential crises show up every week, like clockwork.1:03 The names change, the products are different—AI for cats one week, a blockchain for dog walkers the next—but the human problems are eternal.1:14 And the advice?1:15 The advice is a liturgy.1:17 A set of call-and-response chants that have been repeated for a decade.1:22 Let’s start with the big one, the original sin of startups: co-founder conflict.1:28 That post about the guy getting pushed out?1:32 It’s an archetype.1:33 You have the technical founder who built the whole thing, and the "business" founder who handled sales, and now the business guy has convinced the new investors that the tech guy is replaceable.1:48 Or the inverse.1:49 Or it's two friends who started something on a handshake, and now that real money is on the table, the definition of "work" is suddenly up for debate.2:00 The comments are always the same.2:03 The top-voted one will be something like, “LAWYER UP.2:07 NOW.” The second will be, “This is why you have a clear operating agreement and a vesting schedule.” And the third, my personal favorite, will be some grizzled veteran who says, “Your first mistake was starting a company with your friend.” Thanks, buddy.2:26 Super helpful.2:27 Here’s where we’ve seen this before.2:30 It’s a bad marriage.2:31 That’s all it is.2:32 Two people get swept up in the excitement of the initial idea—the infatuation—and they skip right past the hard conversations.2:42 The pre-nup, in this case, is the operating agreement, the equity split, the roles and responsibilities doc.2:50 Everyone is so sure of their shared future success that planning for failure feels… pessimistic.2:57 Cynical, even.2:58 And then, when things get tough, or even when they get good, it turns out they had fundamentally different ideas about the relationship all along.3:09 The advice is always the same because the advice for a bad breakup is always the same: protect yourself, get legal counsel, and learn from it for next time.3:21 The analogy only breaks down in one place: in business, unlike romance, the entire point is supposed to be a transaction.3:30 The fact that it gets just as messy tells you everything you need to know about how much "business" is really just human emotion in a suit.3:41 Okay, so that’s the relational drama.3:44 The second recurring ghost that haunts the subreddit is the idea itself.3:49 Specifically, the twin fears of “Is my idea worthless?” and “My idea is so valuable someone will steal it.” You see these posts side-by-side.4:00 One will be a desperate plea: “I’ve been working on my SaaS for 6 months and have zero users.4:07 Is my idea just bad?” The other will be a paranoid whisper: “I have a revolutionary app idea but I’m afraid to tell anyone, even developers.4:17 How do I protect it?” The community response is, again, a perfectly synchronized chorus.4:24 To the first person, they say: “You haven’t validated it.4:28 Talk to your users!4:30 Who are you building this for?” To the second, they say: “Ideas are worthless.4:36 Execution is everything.4:38 No one is going to steal your idea because they’re too busy with their own.” It’s a perfect paradox.4:45 An idea is simultaneously so worthless it’s not worth stealing, and so important that you have to validate it or die.4:54 So which is it?4:55 The pattern twin here is the aspiring novelist.4:59 The first-time writer who spends five years perfecting a single manuscript, terrified to send it to an agent because they might steal the plot.5:10 Or the writer who finishes a draft, gets one rejection, and is convinced the entire concept is a failure.5:17 Experienced authors know the truth.5:20 The first draft is never the point.5:23 The idea is just the entry ticket.5:25 The real work is in the rewriting, the editing, the marketing, the grueling process of turning a spark into a finished product that people will actually pay for.5:38 The fear of theft is a rookie move.5:40 It signals that you fundamentally misunderstand where the value is created.5:46 It's not in the idea; it's in the thousand hours of brutal, thankless execution that follow.5:53 Now, here’s where the analogy gets a little shaky.5:57 A novel can’t be reverse-engineered and scaled by a team of a hundred engineers in six months.6:04 A simple app sometimes can.6:06 So the fear isn't entirely irrational, it’s just… misdirected.6:10 The person who is going to beat you isn't the one who steals your idea from a forum post.6:17 It's the one who executes a similar idea better, faster, and with more funding than you.6:24 And you can’t protect yourself from that with a Non-Disclosure Agreement.6:29 You can only protect yourself by being better at the work.6:34 This leads directly into the third horseman of the startup apocalypse: the "I built it, now what?" crisis.6:42 This is my favorite circle of hell to observe.6:45 The technical founder, a genius of code, emerges from their hobbit-hole after a year of furious building.6:53 They’ve created the most elegant, beautiful, technically perfect product.6:59 And they launch it.7:00 And nothing happens.7:02 Crickets.7:02 So they come to r/startups.7:04 “Launched on Product Hunt, got 10 upvotes and 2 signups.7:09 What do I do now?” The post is a howl of confusion.7:12 The logic is broken.7:14 I built the better mousetrap, where is the world beating a path to my door?7:20 And the advice that comes flooding in is a beautiful, chaotic mess.7:25 It’s a firehose of tactics, completely devoid of strategy.7:29 “You need to do SEO!” says one comment.7:32 “No, SEO is a long-term game, you need to run Facebook Ads for quick wins!” says another.7:39 A third person chimes in, “Ads are a waste of money.7:43 You need to build a community on Twitter.” Then you get the old-school guy: “Have you tried just… picking up the phone and calling people?” Cold email scripts are shared.7:56 Complicated content marketing funnels are drawn out in ASCII art.8:01 Someone inevitably suggests starting a podcast.8:04 What does this remind you of?8:06 It’s the diet industry.8:08 Every single year.8:09 The underlying problem is simple: you need more customers.8:14 Just like losing weight is, at its core, about caloric deficit.8:19 But the proposed solutions are a dizzying, contradictory carnival of fads.8:24 Keto, Paleo, Atkins, intermittent fasting, veganism.8:28 Cold calls, SEO, TikTok funnels, content marketing, LinkedIn spam.8:33 They can ALL work.8:34 And they all fail, most of the time.8:37 Why?8:37 Because the person asking the question is looking for a magic tactic, a secret that will unlock the game.8:45 They’re asking "what should I do?" instead of "who should I serve?" They haven’t figured out who their customer is, where they hang out, and what language they speak.8:58 Trying to pick a marketing tactic before you know that is like choosing a diet without knowing if you have a gluten allergy.9:07 It’s just noise.9:09 You grab onto one piece of advice—"Okay, I'll write a blog!"—do it for three weeks, see no results, and then quit, convinced that "content marketing doesn't work." No.9:21 You didn't work.9:22 You didn't do the hard part first.9:25 So what does it all add up to?9:27 This endless cycle of co-founder drama, idea paranoia, and marketing desperation?9:33 Here’s the part that really clicked for me this week, watching that founder get pushed out.9:40 r/startups isn’t a knowledge base that gets smarter over time.9:45 It’s not a collective intelligence that learns from past mistakes.9:50 It’s a train station.9:52 The population is always in flux.9:54 Every day, a new busload of bright-eyed, ambitious founders arrives for the first time.10:01 They are filled with hope and a great idea.10:04 And every day, a battered, bruised, and slightly richer or much poorer group of founders gets on a train and leaves, having learned their lessons the hard way.10:16 The people in the station—the grizzled veterans, the helpful passers-by—are just yelling the same directions over and over again.10:26 "Don't get on the train with a stranger without checking their bags first!" "The map is not the territory!" "You have to sell tickets to get people on the train!" The advice never changes because the new arrivals never change.10:43 The purpose of the subreddit, then, isn't really to provide novel solutions to complex problems.10:50 It's a support group.10:52 It’s a confessional.10:53 The act of posting "my co-founder screwed me" isn't just a request for legal advice.10:59 It's a cry for validation.11:01 It's asking the crowd, "Has this happened to anyone else?11:06 Am I crazy?" And the chorus of "get a lawyer," "vesting schedule," "should have had an operating agreement"—that's not just advice.11:16 It's a ritual.11:17 It's the community saying, "Yes, we see you.11:20 We recognize this story.11:22 You are now one of us." It’s the scarification ceremony for entering the tribe.11:28 So when you’re scrolling through it, don’t look for the next big thing.11:33 Don't look for a secret growth hack that no one else has found.11:38 That’s not what it’s for.11:40 What you’re seeing is the raw, unfiltered, emotional ledger of entrepreneurship, written in real-time.11:48 The same fears, the same mistakes, the same small victories, on a loop.11:53 And that’s what this week sets up for the next.11:57 We know, with absolute certainty, that sometime in the next seven days, someone will post about their co-founder.12:05 Someone will be afraid to share their idea.12:08 And someone will launch to the sound of silence.12:12 But now, when we see those posts, we won't see them as isolated incidents of bad luck or poor planning.12:20 We'll see them as the predictable, necessary, and deeply human stages of a journey that never really changes.12:28 The subreddit isn't a library of answers; it's a mirror reflecting the same fundamental fears that have driven entrepreneurs for centuries.
