0:00 A founder on Reddit today gave this advice: “Fake the backend, not the frontend.” It’s a deceptively simple line that gets right to the heart of the startup world's oldest anxieties, and it feels like a direct response to those ‘déjà vu debates’ we talked about back in episode 128.0:18 Because on r/startups, the same questions come up again and again, but the answers… well, the answers get a little sharper each time.0:27 Today, the entire subreddit feels like a crash course in the three acts of a startup’s life: the hopeful beginning, the terrifying middle, and the all-too-common end.0:39 It starts with that first, fundamental problem: how do you know if your brilliant idea is… actually brilliant?0:46 Before you write a single line of code.0:49 There’s a huge thread about this, about validating an idea before building the MVP, the Minimum Viable Product.0:56 And the consensus is that what most founders do is basically useless.1:01 You know the drill.1:02 You throw up a slick landing page, you describe this amazing future product, you ask people to join a waitlist.1:09 And the community’s collective response today is: so what?1:13 A waitlist doesn’t prove people will use your product, let alone pay for it.1:18 It just proves they were curious for thirty seconds.1:22 This is where that “fake the backend” advice comes in, from a user named nafiulhasanbd.1:28 The idea is simple.1:29 Instead of building the automated, scalable, beautiful machine… you just pretend.1:34 You deliver the product’s value manually.1:37 If you’re building an AI that summarizes articles, you literally have a human—you—summarize the articles and email them to your first twenty users.1:47 You become a concierge.1:49 A "Wizard of Oz" behind the curtain, pulling levers.1:52 And look, this isn't a new idea.1:54 It's been floating around Silicon Valley for years.1:58 But the reason it's resonating so strongly right now is the exhaustion.2:02 People are tired of spending six months building something nobody wants.2:07 This manual method, it forces you to actually confront the single hardest part of the whole journey, which another thread is all about: getting your first ten customers.2:19 The consensus there, from users like Techo_lab, is that the challenge isn't your pitch or your price.2:25 It’s trust.2:26 It’s proving that the problem you think they have is a problem they are desperate to solve.2:32 And you can’t do that by talking at them from a landing page.2:36 One user put it perfectly: “Once conversations shifted from pitching to listening, the first customers came much easier.” You have to get in the trenches with them.2:47 Fake the backend.2:49 Do the work by hand.2:50 It’s the only way to learn if there’s any real work to be automated in the first place.2:56 This whole approach, it reminds me of the early days of filmmaking.3:00 Before massive CGI budgets, directors had to get creative.3:04 They used miniatures, forced perspective, matte paintings.3:08 They were faking the backend.3:10 They were selling the story and the feeling with practical effects, proving the audience would buy into the illusion before spending a fortune to build a whole world.3:21 A landing page is like a movie poster.3:24 A concierge MVP… that’s like shooting the actual scene, even if it’s with cardboard props.3:30 It proves the concept works.3:32 So let’s say you do it.3:33 You listen.3:34 You fake the backend.3:35 You get your first ten, then fifty customers.3:38 You have traction.3:40 And now, someone wants to give you a LOT of money.3:43 This is the second act.3:44 The part where hope meets cold, hard legal documents.3:48 There’s a huge post today from founders getting their first term sheets, and the mood is… nervous.3:55 The advice pouring in is unanimous and loud.3:58 A user named tongboy says it flat out: “You don't send it to a lawyer after signing it, you send it to your lawyer BEFORE signing it.” It sounds obvious, right?4:08 But you’d be amazed.4:10 The excitement, the feeling of validation when that PDF from a VC hits your inbox… it’s intoxicating.4:16 It feels like you’ve already won.4:19 But the community is screaming: that’s not the finish line, that’s the starting gun of a completely different race.4:26 Another founder with three funding rounds under their belt, verycleanpants, points out that a lawyer isn’t just checking for typos.4:35 They’re reading the investor’s intent.4:38 They’re looking at things like liquidation preferences and anti-dilution clauses to see how “clean” the deal is.4:45 Is this an investor who wants to be a partner, or one who’s setting up a game where they win even if you lose?4:53 This is where the pattern-matching gets a little chilling.4:57 A bad term sheet, it’s not just a bad business deal.5:00 It’s structurally identical to a predatory recording contract from the 1960s.5:05 You have a young, hungry artist—the founder—who just wants to make their thing.5:10 And you have a powerful distributor—the VC—offering them the world.5:15 But buried in the fine print are clauses that mean the label owns the master tapes forever, or gets paid back three times over before the artist ever sees a dime.5:26 The technology and the jargon change, but the power dynamic… the temptation to sign your future away just to get in the door… that is timeless.5:35 The subreddit is basically telling founders to find the one person who’s paid to be on their side, and THEIR side only.5:43 And that brings us to the third act.5:46 The one nobody wants to talk about, but everyone is reading.5:50 It’s a post from a founder who is winding their startup down after a year and a half.5:56 They did everything right, on paper.5:58 They had a strong resume from a top tech company, one of the FAANGs.6:03 They quit their job to go all-in.6:05 But the startup just… never found its footing.6:08 In their words: “The startup was not making much money, there were no happy customers… I quit, and the startup soon died.” And here’s the part that’s hitting everyone so hard.6:20 The part that feels like a punch to the gut.6:23 They assumed, with their strong background, they could just slot back into the job market.6:29 They can’t.6:29 They wrote, “Even with a strong resume, I cannot land a job, while my friends who stayed in their jobs… are earning well.” They warn other founders, “If you leave your job and the startup does not work out, you will probably lose a year or more of your life to it.” Wow.6:48 That silence you hear is the sound of thousands of aspiring founders reading that line and feeling a cold dread.6:55 Because this is the ghost at the feast.6:58 The risk isn't just that the business fails.7:01 The risk is that you fall out of sync with the world.7:04 That the skills you developed sprinting on your own don’t translate back to the marathon of a big company.7:11 That the gap on your resume becomes a liability, not a badge of honor.7:16 So what does it all add up to?7:18 You have these three posts, sitting side-by-side on the same page.7:22 One is about the clever, hopeful hacks to get started.7:26 The next is about the dangerous, high-stakes game of taking money.7:31 And the last is a eulogy for a dream.7:33 It’s the complete life cycle, played out in real-time.7:37 And the collective mood is this strange mix of fascination and total exhaustion.7:42 People are drawn to the puzzle of it all—the validation hacks, the term sheet strategies.7:48 But they are also deeply, deeply tired of the cost.7:51 Tired of seeing good people get burned.7:54 This isn't just a tech phenomenon.7:56 This is the story of every gold rush in history.8:00 You have the prospectors with their clever new sluice boxes for finding gold—that’s your MVP validation.8:07 You have the powerful claims agents in the town office offering deals for the best plots of land—that’s your VCs with their term sheets.8:16 And then you have the thousands of people who spent a year of their life digging in the dirt, only to go home with nothing but dusty clothes and broken dreams.8:26 The r/startups subreddit isn't a collection of new problems.8:30 It’s a support group for people navigating a very, very old one.8:35 The core challenge—building something from nothing, and surviving the process—hasn’t changed at all.8:41 What’s clear from today is that the community is moving past just celebrating the wins.8:47 They’re building a shared body of knowledge about survival.8:51 It's less about "how to succeed" and more about "how to fail better." How to know when to quit.8:58 How to read the warning signs in a contract.9:01 How to test an idea without betting your entire career on it.9:05 They are trying, together, to make the fall a little less brutal.9:09 The subreddit isn't a library of answers; it's a map of the same treacherous terrain, redrawn every single day.
