0:00 The entire known universe—every star, every galaxy, all of space and time itself—was once compressed into a region infinitesimally smaller than a single atom.0:12 And then, 13.8 billion years ago, it expanded.0:15 We call that the Big Bang.0:17 It’s the starting line for everything we can observe or measure.0:22 It's funny, it feels like another one of those fundamental questions.0:27 Last week, we were talking about why we sleep, something so basic to our existence, and how it remains this huge evolutionary puzzle.0:37 This feels like that, just on a cosmic scale.0:41 So I have to ask the simple, obvious question: what was there before?0:46 And that is the most profound, and perhaps the most misleading, question in all of physics.0:53 Because our science, our entire framework for understanding reality, breaks down at that exact point.1:01 Our best theory of gravity, Einstein's General Relativity, works perfectly from a fraction of a second after the Big Bang onward.1:11 But at time zero?1:12 The equations just...1:14 give you infinities.1:15 They stop making sense.1:17 What do you mean they stop making sense?1:20 Like, the math is just broken?1:22 Exactly.1:23 It’s the universe giving us an error message.1:26 An infinity in a physics equation doesn't mean the quantity is actually infinite.1:33 It means your theory has crashed.1:35 It’s a sign that the model—in this case, General Relativity—no longer applies.1:41 The conditions are too extreme.1:43 We call that point the singularity.1:46 Okay, so our current tools can't see past it.1:50 But surely people are trying to build new tools, right?1:54 I mean, I hear about things like string theory or multiverse ideas.1:59 Aren't those trying to peek behind that curtain?2:03 Oh, absolutely.2:04 And they are beautiful, elegant mathematical structures.2:08 They try to resolve that singularity by positing things like vibrating strings in higher dimensions, or our universe being one bubble in a larger cosmic foam.2:20 But the catch is—and it's a big one—they are, for now, untestable.2:25 They are frameworks for what might have happened.2:29 So they’re philosophical, almost.2:31 They're mathematical.2:33 And that's not quite the same thing.2:36 But you're getting at the core problem.2:39 The difficulty isn't just a lack of data.2:42 It’s that the very language we're using might be wrong.2:46 How so?2:47 You keep asking what came "before." Think of it this way: what's north of the North Pole?2:54 Nothing.2:54 You can't go north of the North Pole.2:57 You're at the top.2:58 Any direction from there is south.3:01 Exactly.3:02 The question itself is based on a flawed premise.3:05 Ohhh.3:06 Wow.3:06 Okay.3:06 I see where you're going.3:08 Many cosmologists believe the same logic applies to time.3:13 Time isn't a universal clock ticking in the background.3:17 It's a dimension, woven together with space into spacetime.3:21 And that fabric of spacetime is what came into existence at the Big Bang.3:27 So asking what happened "before" the Big Bang is, quite literally, like asking what's north of the North Pole.3:35 The concept of "before," of a timeline, may not even apply.3:40 So it's not a wall we just need to find a way to punch through.3:45 It’s more like...3:46 the edge of the map itself.3:48 And there's no paper beyond it to draw on.3:51 That's a perfect way to put it.3:54 And for me, that's not a failure of science.3:57 It's the most awe-inspiring thing about it.4:00 It's a fundamental limit.4:02 It tells us that our human intuition about cause and effect, about beginnings and befores, might just be local bylaws that don't apply in the cosmic court.4:14 So we might just have to live with not knowing.4:18 We might.4:18 Or, we might have to invent a whole new kind of science, a new kind of language, to even ask the question correctly.4:27 And honestly?4:28 I find that possibility so much more compelling than any simple answer.4:34 There's a kind of beauty in an impenetrable mystery.4:38 It reminds us that the universe is under no obligation to make sense to us.
