About this episode
Start your day grounded—reflect on 'Be still, and know that I am God' and embrace restful strength.
0:00
The average adult makes around thirty-five thousand decisions every single day.
0:07
Last time, we talked about endurance from the book of Isaiah… the strength to push through all of that noise.
0:17
Today, we look at a different kind of strength.
0:22
The strength to stop.
0:24
From the book of Psalms, chapter forty-six, verse ten.
0:29
He says, “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.” That first part… “Be still”… can feel like an impossible command.
0:46
Especially when the day is already demanding so much from you.
0:51
The alarm goes off and the race begins.
0:55
Thirty-five thousand decisions are waiting.
0:59
And in the middle of it all, this quiet, firm instruction to simply… stop.
1:06
The original Hebrew word for “be still” means to let go.
1:11
To release your grip.
1:13
To stop striving.
1:15
It isn’t about forcing your mind to be blank.
1:19
It’s about ceasing your own frantic effort to hold everything together.
1:26
Here’s what that means for you today.
1:29
If your mind is already racing with a to-do list before your feet even hit the floor… stillness is not another task to add.
1:41
It is permission to take something away.
1:45
It’s the choice to set down the list, just for a moment, and breathe.
1:51
It is the decision to not make a decision.
1:55
And notice the result.
1:57
The verse doesn’t say, “Be still and feel peaceful.” Peace might come, but it’s not the direct object.
2:07
It says, “Be still, and KNOW that I am God.” Stillness creates the space for knowing.
2:15
This isn’t the kind of knowing that comes from a textbook or a lecture.
2:22
This is the knowing that comes from presence.
2:26
It’s the difference between reading a biography of a person and sitting in the same room with them.
2:35
In the quiet, you don’t just learn about God.
2:39
You begin to recognize Him.
2:42
You experience His presence.
2:45
Here’s what that means if you're feeling disconnected or far from God.
2:51
The path back might not be through more prayer, more reading, or more effort.
2:58
It might just be through a few minutes of quiet.
3:03
To stop talking, stop asking, stop pleading… and just listen.
3:09
To create a space in your day where the only goal is to be present with the One who is always present with you.
3:19
Then comes the rest of the verse.
3:22
The cosmic reassurance.
3:24
“I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.” This is the part we often forget.
3:34
It reframes our stillness.
3:37
It tells us that the world will not fall apart if we stop spinning for a few minutes.
3:45
It’s a reminder that God’s sovereign plan does not depend on our frantic activity.
3:52
He is God, and His purposes will be accomplished, whether we are rushing or resting.
4:00
Here’s what that means if you're feeling the weight of responsibility.
4:07
For your family, for your work, for your community.
4:12
Your stillness is an act of trust.
4:15
It’s a quiet declaration that you believe God is big enough to handle the world while you catch your breath.
4:25
It’s admitting that the pressure you feel to keep everything going… isn’t all on you.
4:33
The world will always demand more from you.
4:37
More speed.
4:38
More output.
4:39
More decisions.
4:41
It will measure you by your hustle.
4:44
But this ancient wisdom offers a different metric.
4:49
The metric of trust.
4:51
The value of surrender.
4:53
So the invitation for your day is not to try harder.
4:58
It’s to be still.
4:59
And in that stillness… to be held.
