0:00 The average oak tree will drop over ten thousand acorns in a single year.0:05 Only a tiny fraction of those will ever become a tree.0:09 In our last reflection, we spoke about finding calm in God's promises to ease our worries.0:17 Today's reading asks us to trust the process, even when we can't see the outcome.0:23 Let's listen to the words from Proverbs, chapter three, verses five and six.0:29 "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight." That's a verse many of us know by heart.0:44 We see it on wall art, we hear it in sermons.0:47 But what does it actually ask of us on a normal day, when the emails are piling up and the worries start to creep in?0:56 Let's break it down.0:58 It starts with "Trust in the Lord with all your heart." That phrase "all your heart" is the key.1:06 It's not just the faithful, Sunday-morning part of your heart.1:10 It's also the anxious part.1:13 The part that feels overwhelmed.1:15 The part that's disappointed or confused.1:18 God isn't asking for a cleaned-up, perfect version of you.1:23 He's asking for all of it.1:25 Here's what that means if you're looking at your day ahead: It means you can bring your complete, honest self to God.1:34 You can say, "I trust you, but I'm also really worried about this meeting." Or, "I believe you're good, but I feel completely drained today." Trusting with your whole heart is an act of honesty, not an act of perfection.1:51 Then comes the hardest part for most of us.1:55 "Lean not on your own understanding." Our understanding is what we use to navigate the world.2:02 It’s our logic, our experience, our plans.2:05 And it’s a good gift.2:07 But this verse says it has a limit.2:10 It’s not meant to carry the full weight of our lives.2:14 Leaning only on what we can see and figure out is a recipe for anxiety, because deep down, we know our view is limited.2:23 We can't see around the corner.2:26 Here's what that means if you're facing a problem you can't solve: It means the goal isn't to find the perfect solution on your own.2:36 The goal is to turn to God and say, "My understanding has run out here.2:42 I don't know the way forward.2:44 What do you see?" It's releasing the pressure to have all the answers.2:49 It's an invitation to rest, even in the middle of a question.2:54 Next, it says, "in all your ways submit to him." This is where trust becomes a daily practice.3:01 "All your ways" means everything.3:04 The way you drive to work.3:06 The way you respond to your family.3:09 The way you manage your finances.3:11 The project sitting on your desk.3:14 Each one is an opportunity to acknowledge God's presence and guidance.3:20 Here's what that means for your next ten minutes: Submission isn't a grand, one-time gesture.3:27 It's a thousand small, quiet moments.3:30 It’s pausing before sending that email to ask, "Is this kind?" It's choosing patience in the grocery line.3:38 It's a simple, whispered prayer: "God, be in this moment with me." And finally, the promise.3:45 The result of all this trusting and leaning and submitting.3:50 "And he will make your paths straight." Notice it doesn't say He will make your paths easy.3:57 Or smooth.3:58 Or free from hills.3:59 It says He will make them straight.4:02 A straight path is direct.4:04 It has purpose.4:05 It leads somewhere.4:07 When we try to carve our own path based on our limited understanding, we often end up on winding roads that lead nowhere.4:16 We get lost in circles of worry and second-guessing.4:20 But when we trust Him, He takes responsibility for the direction.4:25 He clears the way forward.4:27 Our job isn't to map out the entire journey.4:31 It's just to take the next step, right in front of us, on the path He is making straight.4:38 So the daily practice isn't about trying harder to be good.4:43 It's about practicing the release of control.4:46 It's about letting go of the map you've drawn for yourself, with all its frantic detours and dead ends.4:54 And instead, you're simply asking for the next step on the path He has already made straight for you.5:02 You don't have to see the destination to find peace in His direction.
