About this episode
A gentle, personal meditation on God as our refuge—grounding your day with comfort and faith
0:00
Yesterday, we talked about that simple, profound call to trust in the Lord with all your heart, from Proverbs.
0:10
That call to lean not on our own understanding.
0:15
Today's passage explores what that trust looks like when the ground beneath our feet begins to shake.
0:25
This is Psalm forty-six.
0:27
God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.
0:34
Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging.
0:52
There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy place where the Most High dwells.
1:01
God is within her, she will not fall; God will help her at break of day.
1:09
Nations are in an uproar, kingdoms fall; he lifts his voice, the earth melts.
1:16
The Lord Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.
1:22
Come and see what the Lord has done, the desolations he has brought on the earth.
1:31
He makes wars cease to the ends of the earth.
1:35
He breaks the bow and shatters the spear; he burns the shields with fire.
1:42
He says, “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.” The Lord Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.
2:00
That psalm opens with one of the most powerful promises in all of Scripture.
2:07
God is our refuge and strength.
2:10
An ever-present help in trouble.
2:14
It doesn’t say he prevents trouble.
2:17
It says he is in the trouble with us.
2:21
Here's what that means if you're walking into a day filled with uncertainty.
2:28
Maybe it’s a doctor's appointment you’re dreading.
2:33
Or a meeting with your boss that feels heavy.
2:38
A refuge isn't just a nice thought.
2:41
It is a real place of safety for your heart and mind.
2:46
It’s the permission to say, "I don't have the strength for this on my own, and that's okay.
2:55
Because my strength comes from Him." Then the psalm gives us that incredible imagery.
3:04
The earth giving way.
3:06
Mountains falling into the sea.
3:09
Waters roaring and foaming.
3:12
It describes a world in complete chaos.
3:15
A world that, some days, feels a lot like our own.
3:20
The news cycle, the pressure at work, the conflict in a relationship...
3:27
it can feel like the mountains are quaking.
3:32
The promise isn't that the storm will instantly vanish.
3:37
The promise is that we will not fear.
3:41
Why?
3:41
Because our security isn't based on the stability of the mountains.
3:48
It's based on the presence of God.
3:51
Here's what that means for your day.
3:55
You don't have to pretend the chaos isn't real.
3:59
You don't have to ignore the roaring waters of your to-do list or your anxieties.
4:08
You simply anchor yourself to the truth that God is with you, right in the middle of it.
4:16
He is your fortress.
4:18
And a fortress is built to withstand a siege.
4:23
And that brings us to the very heart of the psalm.
4:28
That quiet, direct command from God himself.
4:32
"Be still, and know that I am God." This is the action we are called to take in the midst of the chaos.
4:42
Stillness.
4:43
It’s not a command to do nothing.
4:46
It’s a command to stop everything else.
4:50
To stop striving in your own power.
4:54
To stop the frantic mental calculations.
4:58
To stop replaying every worst-case scenario.
5:02
To just...
5:03
be still.
5:04
Here’s what that means for you, right now, before the day truly begins.
5:11
It means taking just sixty seconds.
5:15
Before you open your email.
5:17
Before you check the news.
5:20
Just sit in the quiet and let your breathing slow down.
5:25
And in that stillness, acknowledge Him.
5:29
Remind your own soul who is God, and who is not.
5:34
This small act of deliberate stillness is an act of profound trust.
5:40
It’s how we practice knowing that He is God, and we are safe in His hands.
5:48
The world will demand your motion today.
5:52
It will reward your hurry.
5:54
But your strength, your peace, your refuge… they are found in the stillness.
6:02
The Lord Almighty is with us.
6:05
The God of Jacob is our fortress.
6:08
Let that be the foundation on which you build this day.
