About this episode
A gentle Bible verse and reflection to start your day with love, joy, and grounded purpose.
0:00
The average person makes thirty-five thousand decisions every single day.
0:06
In our last time together, we talked about the search for peace within those thousands of choices.
0:15
Today we are going to look at the source of that peace, the character it builds within us.
0:23
Here is the reading from the book of Galatians, chapter five, verses twenty-two and twenty-three.
0:32
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.
0:43
Against such things there is no law.
0:47
This is one of the most famous lists in all of scripture.
0:52
And it can also be one of the most intimidating.
0:56
It sounds like a list of impossible standards.
1:00
A set of virtues we have to somehow manufacture inside ourselves.
1:06
But the first and most important word in that list is “fruit.” Fruit is not something a tree tries to produce.
1:16
A tree doesn't strain or strive to grow an apple.
1:21
The apple is the natural, inevitable result of the tree being healthy and connected to its source of life—the soil, the water, the sun.
1:33
The fruit just… happens.
1:35
Here’s what that means for you, today, as you face your own thirty-five thousand decisions.
1:43
The invitation isn’t to try harder to be more patient.
1:48
Or to force yourself to feel joyful when you’re stressed.
1:53
The invitation is to connect to the source.
1:57
The work is not producing the fruit.
2:01
The work is tending the soil of your own heart.
2:05
So let’s look at just a few of these.
2:08
Peace.
2:09
This isn’t the absence of conflict.
2:12
It’s not an empty inbox or a day with no problems.
2:16
Peace is an inner settledness that can exist right in the middle of chaos.
2:23
It’s the deep breath you take before answering a difficult email.
2:29
It’s the quiet confidence that even if things go wrong, your foundation is secure.
2:37
For you, today, peace might look like choosing not to engage in a pointless argument.
2:44
It might look like putting your phone down for five minutes and just being still.
2:52
Then there’s patience.
2:54
Or, as some translations say, forbearance.
2:57
This is about our posture toward time, and toward other people.
3:03
We live in a world that demands instant results.
3:07
Instant replies.
3:09
Instant solutions.
3:11
Patience is a quiet rebellion against that urgency.
3:15
Here’s what that means for you in the next few hours.
3:20
When a coworker is slow to respond, or the person in front of you in line is taking forever, that’s a moment for fruit to grow.
3:32
Patience isn’t gritting your teeth and waiting.
3:36
It’s a conscious release.
3:38
It’s the decision to grant someone else the grace of time, because you’ve been given that same grace.
3:47
And finally, self-control.
3:50
This one is the anchor for all the others.
3:53
It’s the guardrail.
3:55
It’s the space we create between a feeling and an action.
4:00
You will feel anger today.
4:03
You will feel frustration.
4:05
You will feel tired.
4:07
Self-control doesn’t mean you won’t have those feelings.
4:12
It means you get to decide if those feelings get to drive.
4:17
Here’s what that means for your decisions.
4:21
Self-control is the pause.
4:23
The moment you stop before you speak.
4:27
The moment you wait before you click “send.” It’s what allows love, joy, and peace to have a voice, instead of being drowned out by your first, rawest reaction.
4:41
These qualities are not a checklist for you to complete by the end of the day.
4:48
They are not a measure of your performance.
4:52
They are evidence of a connection.
4:55
They are the fruit that grows when a life is rooted in something deeper than the temporary circumstances of the day.
5:06
So as you walk into the hours ahead, don’t focus on trying to be more patient or more peaceful.
5:15
Focus on the connection.
5:17
Tend to the roots.
5:18
The fruit will take care of itself.
