About this episode
Start your day grounded with a Bible verse and gentle reflection to guide your many choices ahead.
0:00
The average person makes about thirty-five thousand decisions every single day.
0:07
In our last time together, we spoke about Psalm 119, and how God’s word can be a lamp for our feet, a light for our path.
0:18
But with that many choices, and that many pressures, it's easy for the path itself to feel overwhelming.
0:28
There's a piece of scripture that speaks directly to this feeling.
0:34
It’s a promise, and an instruction.
0:37
It comes from the book of Philippians, chapter four, verses six and seven.
0:44
Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.
0:56
And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
1:06
Let’s sit with that for a moment.
1:09
The first line is a command that feels almost impossible.
1:15
"Do not be anxious about anything." If you're like me, your mind immediately lists all the things that feel perfectly reasonable to be anxious about.
1:29
A health concern.
1:30
A difficult conversation you need to have.
1:34
The bills on the counter.
1:36
The state of the world.
1:39
The instruction isn't a scolding.
1:42
It's not meant to make us feel guilty for our anxiety.
1:47
It's an invitation to a different way of handling it.
1:52
Here's what that means if you're feeling that familiar knot in your stomach this morning.
2:00
The verse doesn't just say "stop worrying." It gives us a three-part action to replace the worrying.
2:09
First, prayer.
2:10
Simply turning toward God.
2:13
Opening the conversation.
2:15
Second, petition.
2:17
This is the specific part.
2:19
It means naming the thing that is making you anxious.
2:24
Not in vague terms.
2:26
But actually saying, "God, I am worried about this meeting at ten o'clock." Or, "I am concerned about my child's sadness." Or, "I don't know how we're going to make ends meet this month." Voicing the specific fear takes away some of its power.
2:48
You're no longer carrying it alone.
2:52
You are presenting your request.
2:55
And then comes the third part.
2:57
The part that changes everything.
3:00
"With thanksgiving." This is the pivot.
3:04
In the same breath that you name your fear, you are asked to name a gratitude.
3:11
This is the practice that rewires our minds and hearts.
3:16
It shifts our focus from what we lack, or what we fear we might lose, to what we have.
3:24
To what God has already provided.
3:27
Here's what that means for your day.
3:31
As you present your specific worry to God, try to attach a specific thanksgiving to it.
3:39
Even if it feels small.
3:41
"God, I'm anxious about this medical test...
3:45
but I'm thankful for the doctor who is trying to help." "I'm worried about this conflict at work...
3:54
but I'm thankful I have a job to go to." This isn't about ignoring the problem.
4:02
It's about anchoring yourself in God's faithfulness, even as you face the storm.
4:09
And what is the result of this practice?
4:13
"And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds." Notice what it does not say.
4:24
It doesn't say the problem will instantly disappear.
4:29
It doesn't say you will suddenly understand the solution.
4:35
It says a peace that goes beyond logic...
4:38
a peace that doesn't make sense given the circumstances...
4:44
will come.
4:45
It's a supernatural peace.
4:47
A gift.
4:48
It's the calm you feel in the eye of a hurricane.
4:52
The world outside may still be raging, but a profound stillness settles over your inner world.
5:01
And this peace has a job to do.
5:04
It will "guard your hearts and your minds." Think of a sentry, a soldier standing watch at a gate.
5:13
That is the image here.
5:15
This peace stands guard at the gate of your heart, where your emotions can run wild.
5:23
It stands guard at the gate of your mind, where anxious thoughts can spiral out of control.
5:31
It keeps the chaos out.
5:34
It protects the most vulnerable parts of you.
5:38
So today, when anxiety comes knocking—and it will—remember the exchange you are being offered.
5:46
You don't have to just endure it.
5:50
You can trade it.
5:51
Present your worries, name your thanks, and receive the peace that stands guard.
