0:00 The prophet Jeremiah wrote his most famous words of hope not from a peaceful study, but in the middle of a seventy-year national crisis.0:12 In our last episode, we centered ourselves in morning stillness.0:18 Today's verse was written for the exact opposite of a still moment, which makes its promise even more powerful.0:28 Let this word from the Lord settle over you.0:32 From the book of Jeremiah, chapter twenty-nine, verse eleven.0:38 “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” This is perhaps one of the most beloved, and most misunderstood, verses in all of scripture.0:59 It’s on coffee mugs and graduation cards.1:03 But it was first written on a scroll sent to a generation of people who had lost everything.1:12 Their homes, their temple, their nation.1:15 They were exiles in Babylon, a place of deep uncertainty.1:21 And God’s message to them, through Jeremiah, was not “I’m getting you out of this tomorrow.” His message was, “You will be here for seventy years.1:34 Settle in.1:35 Build houses, plant gardens, get married.1:39 And trust my plan.” So what does this promise of a plan, a future, and a hope mean for you, today?1:48 First, notice the source of the plan.1:51 “For I know the plans I have for you.” It does not say, “For you know the plans you have for you.” It’s a declaration of God’s sovereignty, not a confirmation of our own agenda.2:08 Here’s what that means if you’re facing a day full of unknowns.2:13 Maybe you’re waiting on a call from a doctor.2:18 Or you’re walking into a difficult meeting.2:22 Or you’re just staring at a to-do list that feels impossible.2:27 The peace of this verse isn’t that your plans will work out perfectly.2:34 The peace is that your day is held within a plan that is much larger, much wiser, and much more loving than your own.2:44 Your job isn’t to have all the answers.2:48 Your job is to trust the One who does.2:52 The pressure is NOT on you.2:54 Second, look at the nature of the plan.2:58 “Plans to prosper you and not to harm you.” The original Hebrew word for “prosper” is shalom.3:06 It doesn’t just mean wealth or success.3:10 It means wholeness.3:12 Completeness.3:13 Peace.3:13 It’s the well-being of your entire person — spirit, soul, and body.3:20 Here’s what that means if you’re in a season of struggle.3:25 God’s plan for your welfare, your shalom, is not a promise that you will avoid all difficulty.3:34 The people in Babylon were certainly not avoiding difficulty.3:39 Instead, it’s a promise that God is working FOR your ultimate good, for your wholeness, even in the midst of hardship.3:50 He is not the author of your pain, but He is the redeemer of it.3:56 He will weave every thread, even the dark ones, into a pattern of grace you cannot yet see.4:04 His plan is for your PEACE, even when your circumstances are not peaceful.4:11 Finally, see the horizon of the plan.4:15 “Plans to give you hope and a future.” This was a long-term promise.4:21 It was for a generation that might not even live to see the return from exile.4:28 It was a promise for their children, and their children’s children.4:34 Here’s what that means if you feel stuck.4:38 If the change you long for seems impossibly far away.4:43 Hope, in the Bible, is not wishful thinking.4:47 It is the confident expectation of a future reality, based on the character of God.4:55 This verse gives you permission to anchor your heart in a future that God has guaranteed, even while your feet are walking through a difficult present.5:09 The uncertainty of today does not get the final word.5:14 God’s promise for your future does.5:17 So as you move into the hours ahead, you don’t have to pretend the uncertainties aren’t real.5:25 You don’t have to ignore the questions or the fears.5:30 Just hold them in one hand.5:33 And in the other, hold this promise.5:36 A promise of a plan that is HIS.5:39 A promise of a peace that is HOLISTIC.5:43 And a promise of a future that is HOPEFUL.5:46 Know which one is heavier.5:49 Know which one defines your day.5:52 And know which one will carry you all the way home.
