0:00 Good morning.0:01 Researchers say the human mind wanders about forty-seven percent of the time.0:07 Nearly half of our waking moments are spent thinking about something other than what we are actually doing.0:17 In our last time together, we talked about starting the day grounded, like sharing a quiet breakfast.0:26 This morning, we'll talk about how to stay present at that table, even when the mind wants to wander off into tomorrow.0:36 Here is the reading from the book of Matthew, chapter six, verse thirty-four.0:43 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself.0:49 Each day has enough trouble of its own.0:53 Let’s sit with that for a moment.0:56 It’s a simple instruction, but it runs against every instinct we have.1:02 Our minds are planning machines.1:04 They are constantly running simulations, preparing for what’s next, trying to solve problems before they even arrive.1:15 And Jesus, in his great kindness, steps in and says… stop.1:20 Let’s look at the three parts of this beautiful release.1:25 First, the direct command: "Therefore do not worry about tomorrow." Worry is not the same as planning.1:34 Planning is wise.1:35 It’s thinking ahead and making provision.1:39 Worry is different.1:40 Worry is the anxiety, the fear, the emotional weight we attach to a future we cannot control.1:48 It's a story we tell ourselves about a future that hasn't happened yet, and usually, it's a scary story.1:58 Here's what that means for you, today.2:01 It means you have permission to release the imagined burdens of Tuesday while you are still living Monday.2:10 The presentation you have to give next week… the difficult conversation you need to have… the uncertainty of a medical test.2:21 Jesus is not saying those things aren't real.2:25 He is saying they are not for now.2:28 Worrying about them today does not make you more prepared for them tomorrow.2:34 It only steals the peace and strength available to you right NOW.2:40 Second, he gives the reason: "for tomorrow will worry about itself." This can sound a little strange at first.2:50 How can a day worry?2:51 It's a figure of speech, a personification.2:55 It means the challenges appointed for tomorrow will arrive with tomorrow.3:02 They are not your property today.3:05 They belong to that future time, and the grace to handle them will also belong to that future time.3:13 Here's what that means for you, in this moment.3:17 You have a specific, limited jurisdiction.3:21 Your work, your grace, your strength is for today.3:25 God doesn't give you tomorrow's grace today, because you don't need it yet.3:32 It’s like trying to run a lamp on tomorrow’s electricity.3:37 It isn't available.3:38 Trying to carry the weight of the entire week on Monday morning will crush you.3:45 God’s economy is different.3:48 He gives grace that is perfectly measured for the container of a single day.3:54 Finally, he gives us the grounding reality: "Each day has enough trouble of its own." This isn't a pessimistic statement.4:05 It’s a realistic one.4:07 It is the most freeing part of the whole verse.4:11 It's an acknowledgement that life is not always easy.4:16 Today will have its own set of challenges, its own frustrations, its own moments of difficulty.4:24 And that is okay.4:25 It is normal.4:26 Here's what that means for you in the hours ahead.4:31 God is not asking you to handle a lifetime of challenges on a day's worth of strength.4:38 He is inviting you to find profound peace by focusing ONLY on what is right in front of you.4:46 The gift here is sufficiency.4:49 Today's grace for today's trouble.4:52 Today's strength for today's tasks.4:55 Today's peace for today's anxieties.4:58 That is the deal.5:00 And it is a deal filled with mercy.5:03 So when your mind begins to wander, when it jumps ahead and starts borrowing trouble from tomorrow, gently guide it back.5:13 Remind yourself of this promise.5:16 You have been given exactly what you need for this day.5:21 Not for next week.5:22 Not for tomorrow.5:24 For today.5:25 Your task is not to solve the future.5:28 It is simply to live faithfully, and peacefully, within the twenty-four hours you have been given.
