About this episode
Warm words and a simple thought, softly spoken—like a friend who truly understands and cares.
0:00
Find a comfortable position.
0:02
Seated, or lying down.
0:04
It doesn’t matter.
0:06
Just allow your body to be held by the surface beneath it.
0:11
Let your eyes drift closed, if they aren't already.
0:15
And take one breath.
0:17
In through the nose… and out through the mouth.
0:21
Another.
0:22
Just like that.
0:23
Letting the day fall away.
0:26
Researchers at University College London ran a study where they asked people to evaluate music.
0:34
One piece was described as being played by a “natural” talent, someone for whom it was effortless.
0:43
The other piece—the exact same recording—was described as being played by a “striver,” someone who had to work incredibly hard for years.
0:55
People consistently rated the music from the “natural” as being superior.
1:02
They preferred the story of effortlessness over the reality of effort.
1:08
That bias doesn't just live out there, in a research lab.
1:13
It lives in here.
1:14
In us.
1:15
We see the highlight reels of others—the finished product, the easy smile, the promotion.
1:23
We see it and we think… a natural.
1:26
But for ourselves… we see the struggle.
1:29
We feel the effort.
1:31
We know about the dead ends, the three drafts we threw away, the morning we could barely get out of bed.
1:40
We see all the striving.
1:42
And a quiet voice inside tells us that our effort is a sign of weakness.
1:49
That if we were good enough… it would be easier.
1:53
Here’s what that means, for you, sitting in the quiet of this room.
1:59
It means that the part of you that feels like it’s trying too hard… the part that feels like it’s pushing a rock uphill every single day… that part is not a flaw.
2:14
It’s the engine.
2:15
Bring to mind one thing you tried to do today.
2:19
It could be small.
2:21
A difficult email you finally sent.
2:24
A conversation you had.
2:26
A moment of patience with your family, or with yourself.
2:31
Feel the effort that it took.
2:33
Don’t judge it.
2:35
Just notice it.
2:36
The tension in your shoulders, maybe.
2:39
The deep breath you had to take before you started.
2:44
The feeling of being just a little bit spent afterward.
2:49
We are taught to value the destination—the sent email, the finished project, the resolved conflict.
2:58
But what if the value was never in the result?
3:02
What if the real worth was in the trying itself?
3:06
The world tells us to hide the sweat.
3:09
To show up with the trophy, not the training log.
3:14
But the training log—the daily act of showing up, of putting in the work, of facing the resistance inside you and taking one more step—that is not the prelude to the victory.
3:29
That is the victory.
3:31
Every single time you try, you are casting a vote for a version of yourself that is resilient.
3:39
Capable.
3:40
Worthy of the effort.
3:42
The outcome is secondary.
3:44
The attempt… the pure, simple, courageous act of trying… is everything.
3:51
It is a complete and whole thing in itself.
3:54
It needs no external validation.
3:57
It needs no applause.
3:59
So let’s return to the breath, for a moment.
4:03
Feeling the gentle rise and fall of your chest.
4:07
Let the judgment about your own effort dissolve.
4:12
Let go of the story that it should be easier.
4:16
It takes what it takes.
4:18
And you are doing it.
4:19
You are showing up.
4:21
And that is more than enough.
4:24
It is profound.
4:25
Carry that with you.
4:27
Your effort is not a measure of your failure to be a natural.
4:32
It is the evidence of your devotion.
