0:00 Let’s just start here.0:01 Wherever here is for you.0:03 In this room.0:04 In this chair.0:06 Just take a moment to notice the feeling of your feet on the floor.0:11 The weight of your body, held and supported.0:15 Let’s take one breath together.0:17 In… and out.0:18 A study published just yesterday, on September seventeenth, looked at different ways to manage the feeling of being overwhelmed.0:29 We talked last time about how rest isn't a reward you have to earn, and this feels like a continuation of that thought.0:38 What do we do when rest feels far away… when the world is just asking for too much?0:45 The demands of work, of family, of just… being a person.0:50 It’s easy to feel lost in a way you can’t quite describe.0:54 Disconnected, even when you crave closeness.0:58 Therapists say that’s a common feeling.1:01 This sense of being overwhelmed by it all.1:04 And we so often think that the solution is to get organized, to get motivated, to find the right answer, to fix it.1:14 We think we need a map.1:16 But the research, and so much of what we know in our hearts, points to something much simpler.1:23 And maybe, much harder.1:25 It points to the power of just showing up.1:29 The simple act of being present.1:31 As one writer, Sipho Ngwema, put it earlier this month, "Let your presence be a gentle reminder that true strength lies in uplifting others, and that the deepest connections are forged through empathy and grace." And that empathy and grace… it has to start with you.1:53 Research on self-compassion shows that it helps us regulate our own emotions.1:59 It quiets that inner critic, it softens the need for perfectionism, and—this is the important part—it increases our tolerance for uncertainty.2:11 It gives us the ability to be okay with not knowing.2:15 To be okay with the mess.2:17 Because what nobody tells you is that showing up doesn't mean you have all the answers.2:24 It doesn't mean you feel strong or prepared.2:28 In fact, it usually means the opposite.2:31 The real courage, the quiet, deep-down strength… is showing up when you feel COMPLETELY unprepared.2:39 When you feel uncertain.2:41 When you feel overwhelmed.2:43 The act of being present for your own life, right as it is, without needing it to be different first… that is the most powerful thing you can do.2:55 It’s not a step you take before the real work begins.2:59 That IS the work.3:01 It reminds me of a line from a devotional I read: "His peace does not rise and fall with my situation, and His love does not depend on whether I am celebrating or simply surviving." Your worth, your strength… it also doesn’t rise and fall with your situation.3:22 It’s constant.3:23 It’s in the showing up.3:25 It’s in the being here, now.3:27 Even if all you’re doing is surviving.3:30 Even if all you can manage is one more breath.3:34 So as you move through your day, or settle into your night, maybe you can carry this one thought.3:42 Let it be a comfort.3:43 Just being here is enough.
