0:00 the seashell was wedged between a sewer grate and a flattened cigarette butt last week we talked about how a single cerulean crayon could hold an entire sky this was something else this was an artifact from another world washed up on the shores of 34th street it was a common moon snail shell no bigger than my thumb but0:27 seeing it there on the grimy pavement it was like finding a fallen star i stopped the river of people flowing around me didn't notice they had places to be deadlines to meet but i had to crouch down right there on the sidewalk and look the shell's exterior was a smooth milky gray worn down by a thousand tides0:54 but the inside the inside still held a faint pearlescent glow a secret shimmer against the oil stained concrete how did it get here miles from the nearest ocean it was an impossibility a glitch in the city's code my mind the way it always does started writing stories i saw a little girl pockets full of treasures from a1:21 day trip to coney island i could feel the rough canvas of her coat the frantic patting of her hands when she realized her favorite one was gone the sharp silent grief of a lost thing or maybe maybe it was an old man i saw him sitting on a park bench the shell a smooth worry stone in his1:44 palm for fifty years a relic from a beach where he'd met a girl a lifetime ago and as he stood up it slipped unnoticed from his tired fingers a final quiet goodbye the story possibilities felt endless each one a tiny perfect heartbreak it could have been dropped by a tourist a piece of cheap gift shop jewelry that2:08 broke but the edges were too naturally worn for that it felt ancient it felt important and i wanted it i wanted to be its keeper to solve its mystery2:25 my fingers were just about to close around it to claim it to put it in my pocket and make its story mine2:37 and then i stopped what if its story wasn't finished what if i wasn't meant to be its final destination but just stop along the way the magic wasn't in having the shell the magic was in the finding the magic was in the moment of pure unadulterated wonder on a tuesday afternoon the brief beautiful interruption of the mundane3:05 if i took it the story would end with me it would become just another object on my desk3:12 so i did something else i picked it up gently the city grid felt coarse against its impossible smoothness i walked over to a large terracotta planter outside a closed down coffee shop the soil was dry and packed but in the center someone had left a small painted rock a little ladybug it was another small act of defiance3:40 another whisper against the noise i nestled the seashell right next to it its pale spiral turned up toward the sky i didn't hide it i curated it i was making a new exhibit for the museum of the street for the next person whose eyes were open enough to see i walked away without looking back i could feel4:04 it there behind me a tiny beacon of the sea waiting the story wasn't over it had just been passed on and the city felt different suddenly not just a grid of streets but a landscape of hidden things waiting to be found
