0:00 The cardboard box was already taped shut, but you kept pressing the brown tape down with your thumb, over and over, until the plastic went entirely smooth against the paper.0:12 You were leaving the kitchen keys on the counter.0:15 In episode thirty-five, we unraveled a love story in reverse to find where everything began, and standing in that doorway, watching your thumb flatten out the air bubbles, I found myself doing the exact same thing: searching backward for the seam.0:33 Wondering how two people walk all the way through a life together only to end up negotiating who keeps the copper kettle.0:42 You didn't look up when you set the keys down.0:45 They made a tiny, dull clinking sound against the speckled laminate.0:50 That was October.0:51 A Tuesday, I think.0:52 Gray light coming through the small window above the sink, making everything look like it had been rinsed in cold water.1:01 You said, "Take care of yourself," and it sounded like an instruction you were giving to a stranger on a train platform.1:09 I stayed by the refrigerator until the front door clicked shut.1:14 It didn't slam.1:15 That was the worst part.1:17 It just caught on the brass latch, soft and final.1:20 Three months before that kitchen went quiet, in the middle of July, we were sitting on the back steps at midnight because the upstairs bedroom was unbearable.1:32 The heat had settled into the plaster walls like a fever that wouldn't break.1:37 You had a glass of water balanced between your knees, the ice melting so fast it left rings of condensation on the worn wood.1:46 We were talking about a trip to Maine.1:49 Or rather, we were pretending to talk about Maine, tossing town names into the air like coins.1:55 Rockland.1:56 Camden.1:57 Blue Hill.1:57 But neither of us was looking at maps.2:00 We both knew the car wouldn't make the drive, and neither of us wanted to say that the car wasn't the real problem.2:08 There was this long, polite distance between our shoulders.2:12 Maybe six inches.2:14 We could have bridged it without moving anything except an elbow, but neither of us did.2:20 You took a sip from your glass and asked if I remembered to lock the basement.2:25 Not "do you love me," not "why aren't we talking anymore." Just the basement door.2:31 As if the danger was something creeping up through the cellar floor, and not the fact that we had already stopped reaching across the steps.2:41 Before the silence got that heavy, though, there was the winter of the radiator leak.2:47 January.2:48 The steam pipe in the corner of the living room started knocking every morning at dawn, a sharp, metallic rhythm that sounded like someone tapping a wrench against the iron.3:00 We used to wake up angry about it.3:03 We would lie there under the wool blanket, staring at the ceiling, waiting for the third bang, because the third bang was always the loudest.3:13 But one morning, you didn't curse under your breath.3:16 You just rolled toward me, your forehead resting right against the hollow of my throat, cold skin against warm skin.3:25 You whispered, "Three, two, one." And the pipe hammered right on cue.3:30 We laughed, quiet and muffled under the covers, our breath mingling in the cold air of the bedroom.3:37 I remember thinking that morning that we could survive anything that made a racket, so long as we braced for it together.3:45 I didn't know yet that the things that actually break you don't make any noise at all.3:51 Go back another year.3:53 November, late afternoon, raining hard against the glass of that diner on Fourth Street.3:59 We had ordered coffee and a plate of fries that sat between us, slowly going limp under the neon lights.4:07 You were telling me about your father's hands.4:10 How he used to work on watch movements with tiny tweezers, his magnifying loupe screwed into his eye socket, never looking up even when the tea kettle boiled over on the stove.4:23 You were crying, but you were furious with yourself for crying, wiping your cheeks with a scratchy paper napkin that left little shreds of white pulp near your eyebrow.4:35 I reached across the red vinyl table and pulled your wrist toward me.4:39 Not to pull you away from the memory, just to give you something solid to hold while you went through it.4:47 You let me.4:48 You opened your fingers and curled them into the palm of my hand.4:52 Your grip was so tight my knuckles went white, but I didn't pull back.4:57 We stayed like that until the waitress brought the check, our fingers locked over cold grease and spilled salt, completely unashamed of how raw we were in the middle of an empty restaurant.5:11 And before that, before the diner, before we even knew what kind of coffee the other took, there was the evening on the roof of the old warehouse by the canal.5:22 It was late spring.5:24 May.5:24 The sun was going down behind the refinery across the river, turning the chemical smoke into shades of peach and burnt violet.5:33 You had climbed the rusted fire escape first, three rungs ahead of me, your canvas sneakers leaving dusty prints on the black iron.5:42 When we reached the tar paper roof, the wind took your hair and threw it across your face.5:49 You turned around, out of breath, your cheeks flushed red from the climb, holding out a single sour plum you had carried up in your jacket pocket.5:59 You split it open with your thumbs, the juice running down the side of your hand, and handed me the larger half.6:07 You said, "Be careful with the stone." We didn't know anything then.6:12 We didn't know that the apartment we would eventually sign a lease for had a leak in the roof, or that the radiator would keep us awake, or that five years later you would stand in the gray kitchen light smoothing down packing tape with your thumb.6:30 We just stood on that gravelly tar paper, spitting the plum stones over the low parapet into the weeds below, watching them vanish into the dusk.6:40 You leaned your shoulder against mine, casual and careless, just taking a breath before walking back down to the street.6:48 It was nothing.6:50 A split fruit, an evening wind, an untroubled hour.6:53 But sitting here tonight, watching the quiet gather in the empty rooms, I keep going back to that roof.7:01 I keep looking at that half-plum in your sticky hand, trying to see the ending in it.7:07 Trying to find the exact second where the sweetness turned, and wondering if you could taste it too, even then.
