About this episode
Each week, join Pip for breathless adventures in a world where the impossible is just the beginning!
0:00
The first sound Pip heard that morning was the cat purring at the end of the bed.
0:08
Except it wasn’t a purr.
0:11
It was a ribbit.
0:13
This was somehow even stranger than last week, when all the sounds had gone completely silent.
0:23
Now they weren't gone...
0:25
they were just...
0:27
wrong.
0:28
Pip sat bolt upright.
0:30
The alarm clock on the nightstand wasn't beeping.
0:35
It was...
0:36
oinking?
0:37
Like a tiny pig.
0:39
This was NOT right.
0:41
Pip jumped out of bed and ran to the window.
0:46
Outside, a car drove by, but instead of a vroom-vroom engine sound, it made a gentle...
0:55
whoosh, like the wind.
0:58
And when the driver honked the horn?
1:01
A bird chirped.
1:03
A perfect, little tweet-tweet-tweet!
1:07
Pip’s dog, Barnaby, trotted into the room and let out a huge, happy bark.
1:15
Or...
1:15
he tried to.
1:17
What came out was a very confused, very loud...
1:22
MEOW.
1:22
This was a problem.
1:24
A big one.
1:25
How could anyone understand anything if a dog’s bark was a cat’s meow?
1:33
What if a fire engine’s siren sounded like...
1:38
like a babbling brook?
1:40
Someone had to fix it.
1:43
And Pip knew just who that someone had to be.
1:47
Following the weirdest sounds—the school bell that croaked like a frog, the wind that clanged like a cymbal—Pip traced the mixed-up noises to their source.
2:04
The trail led up, up, up to the old, abandoned radio tower on Whisperwind Hill.
2:13
The giant metal door was slightly open.
2:17
And from inside came the strangest sound of all...
2:22
a thousand whispers that sounded exactly like a waterfall.
2:29
Pip pushed the door open.
2:31
And saw it.
2:32
A machine.
2:34
It was a giant, humming contraption of wires and levers and two enormous funnels.
2:42
One funnel was pointed at a collection of things in the room—a cat, a bell, a toy car.
2:52
The other funnel was pointed out a huge window, aimed right at the town.
2:59
And in the middle, a panel of wires was a complete mess!
3:05
The wire labeled “DOG BARK” was plugged into the slot for “CAT MEOW.” The “CAR HORN” wire was jammed into the “BIRD CHIRP” slot!
3:19
It wasn’t broken.
3:21
It was just a puzzle put together all wrong!
3:26
Pip knew what to do.
3:28
With careful hands, Pip started unplugging the wires.
3:34
Out came the frog-croak from the bell socket.
3:39
Out came the oink from the alarm clock socket.
3:44
One by one, Pip matched the labels on the wires to the labels on the machine.
3:52
BARK to BARK.
3:53
RING to RING.
3:55
HONK to HONK.
3:56
With the very last wire snapped into place——it happened.
4:02
A wave of sound rushed out of the tower.
4:06
A real sound.
4:08
From down in the town, Pip heard it.
4:12
A car horn blared a proper HONK.
4:15
A dog let out a glorious, window-rattling WOOF!
4:20
The world sounded like itself again.
4:24
And high up on the hill, Pip listened as the right sounds settled back into all the right places, a quiet hero in a world that was, finally, no longer mixed-up.
