0:00 On August eleventh, 1942, the U.S.0:02 Patent Office granted patent number 2,292,387 for a "Secret Communication System." It was designed to help Allied torpedoes find their mark, unjammable by enemy forces.0:17 The lead inventor wasn't a government engineer, but one of the most famous movie stars on the planet.0:25 Last week, Admin, we sat down with Nikola Tesla, a genius whose ideas were so far ahead of their time they were dismissed.0:35 Tonight, it feels like we’re seeing a pattern.0:39 Our guest is the brilliant, the beautiful, the perpetually underestimated Hedy Lamarr.0:47 Welcome to the show.0:48 It’s an honor.0:49 People see the photos, the films… they think they know you.0:54 But they have no idea, do they?0:57 They see the glamour, but you were sitting on an idea that would, quite literally, build the modern world.1:06 How does a Hollywood star end up co-inventing frequency-hopping spread spectrum technology during World War Two?1:15 I mean, the story is incredible.1:18 You're at these dinner parties, married to an arms dealer, Fritz Mandl.1:24 And while everyone else is making small talk, you're listening.1:29 You're absorbing everything about military technology.1:34 You saw the problem firsthand: radio-guided torpedoes were easy to jam.1:40 The signal was a sitting duck.1:43 So you get this idea.1:44 A signal that isn't a sitting duck.1:47 A signal that moves.1:49 Hops.1:49 And then you meet the avant-garde composer George Antheil.1:54 He's known for synchronizing multiple player pianos.1:59 And that’s the spark, isn't it?2:01 The mechanism from a player piano… a paper roll that could synchronize a rapid change in radio frequencies.2:10 Eighty-eight of them, to be exact.2:13 The same number of keys on a piano.2:16 It’s so poetic, it’s almost unbelievable.2:20 You two literally used a piano roll as the model for a jam-proof guidance system.2:26 So you take this brilliant, patriotic, desperately needed idea to the U.S.2:33 Navy.2:33 And what do they say?2:35 "It's too bulky." They looked at you, the most beautiful woman in the world, and they told you that you’d be more useful selling war bonds.2:47 They told you to just be the pretty face.2:50 How did that feel?2:52 To offer them a key to winning the war, and to be told to go sell kisses for fifty thousand dollars worth of bonds instead?3:02 It must have been… infuriating.3:05 They put the patent in a file, and it just sat there.3:09 It expired in 1945.3:11 You never made a single dollar from it.3:14 For decades, the world just went on thinking of you as Hedy Lamarr, the movie star.3:21 Not Hedy Lamarr, the genius who held the blueprint for the future in her hands.3:28 And then… the future arrived.3:30 The Navy finally dusted off your idea in the 1960s.3:34 But the real vindication came later.3:37 Much later.3:38 Suddenly, we’re living in a world of Wi-Fi.3:42 Of GPS.3:43 Of Bluetooth.3:44 All of these technologies that connect us, that guide us, that form the invisible architecture of our daily lives… they all rely on the core principle you patented back in 1942.3:59 They all needed a way to send a secure signal.4:03 They all needed to hop.4:04 You were finally inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2014.4:11 Posthumously.4:12 It’s a wonderful honor, but it feels like such a delayed apology.4:17 Do you see it that way?4:19 Or is the work itself the real legacy?4:23 Looking back from where we are now, the single most valuable thing you gave us wasn't just the technology.4:31 It was the refusal to be one thing.4:34 You proved that a person can be celebrated for their beauty AND be a world-changing inventor.4:42 That art and science aren't separate worlds.4:46 They are two languages for describing the same universe.4:51 Your patent wasn’t just for a secret communication system.4:56 It was a secret identity.4:58 And the world is only just beginning to understand how brilliant you truly were.
