0:00 Thomas Edison once promised Nikola Tesla fifty thousand dollars to redesign his direct current generators.0:09 When Tesla presented the solution, a work of staggering genius, Edison just laughed and said, "Tesla, you don't understand our American humor." Last week, in our time with Leonardo da Vinci, we talked about the weight of unfinished masterpieces.0:29 Tonight, it seems we're with another mind who saw too much, too soon, a man whose greatest joke was on a world that wasn't ready for his punchline.0:42 I’ve been sitting with the ghost of Nikola Tesla.0:46 And when you talk to him, you realize he isn’t a man so much as a frequency.0:52 You have to tune in.0:54 So I asked him, where did it all come from?0:58 This...0:58 vision.0:59 He just smiles, a little sadly, and says, "Visualization is the secret." He told me he never built a device without first constructing it, testing it, and running it, perfectly, inside his own head.1:16 The imagination, for him, was more real than the world.1:21 So how does a mind like that end up working for a pragmatist like Thomas Edison?1:27 Ambition.1:28 A letter of recommendation.1:30 And a belief that genius would be recognized.1:34 Instead, he got a lesson in American humor.1:38 After Edison refused to pay him that fifty thousand dollars, Tesla walked.1:44 And the War of the Currents began.1:47 This wasn't some polite academic debate.1:50 Edison, backed by the finances of J.P.1:54 Morgan, knew Tesla’s alternating current—AC—was superior.1:59 It could travel hundreds of miles, while Edison’s DC was limited to about a one-mile radius.2:06 So Edison didn't fight the science.2:09 He fought a propaganda war.2:12 He paid schoolboys to capture stray dogs and cats to be publicly electrocuted with Tesla's AC power.2:20 He spread articles calling it a "constant threat." He made sure the first electric chair was powered by AC.2:29 He was trying to brand Tesla's idea with the signature of DEATH.2:35 All Tesla had on his side, with his partner George Westinghouse, was the simple fact that his system was better.2:44 That it worked.2:45 And he won.2:46 AC became the standard.2:48 It's why the lights are on in your house right now.2:53 But this is where the story you think you know...2:57 ends.2:57 And where the real tragedy begins.3:00 Because after lighting up the world, I asked him, what was next?3:06 And his eyes...3:07 they lit up with a fire that was almost frightening.3:11 He wasn't done.3:13 He didn't just want to send power through wires.3:17 He wanted to send it through the air.3:20 Through the very earth itself.3:22 Wireless power.3:24 For everyone.3:25 For free.3:26 And that… that was the moment he truly lost.3:29 The financiers who had backed him for the grid, they couldn't sell free energy.3:36 His vision had finally outstripped capitalism.3:40 They called him eccentric.3:42 A dreamer.3:43 They pulled the funding.3:45 And the man who won the War of the Currents, who electrified the modern age, was left alone in his lab with ideas the world called impossible.3:57 So looking back, what was this moment?4:00 What do we learn from this phantom conversation?4:04 It’s not just that he was right.4:07 It's that he was right about too many things at once.4:12 We celebrate the genius who gives us a better product.4:16 We exile the one who offers a better world for free.4:21 His ecstasy was his work, but his curse was seeing a future no one else was willing to pay for.4:29 He died in debt, while the world ran on the patents he’d sold for a fraction of their worth.4:37 He gave us the nervous system of the twenty-first century, and all it cost him was everything.
