0:00 The twenty-four carpets on the floor of the Hall of Mirrors did not quite match.0:07 Last week, we stood with Erich as the Berlin Wall crumbled in a moment of pure, chaotic joy.0:15 This was not that.0:16 This was the opposite of that.0:19 This was order, imposed with the weight of five years of war.0:24 I was twenty-two, a junior translator tucked away behind a French diplomat.0:31 My job was to be invisible, to be a ghost who spoke two languages.0:37 From my corner, I could see everything.0:40 The air was thick, smelling of old silk, dust, and too many men in black wool coats.0:48 The treaty lay on a horseshoe-shaped table in the center of the hall.0:54 It looked… small.0:55 Too small to hold all the death it was meant to answer for.1:01 The men who wrote it sat with their backs to the long mirrors.1:06 Clemenceau of France, "the Tiger," looked like he’d just finished a satisfying meal.1:13 President Wilson of America looked tired, like an idealist who’d spent six months in a room with cynics.1:23 And then there were the Germans.1:25 Hermann Müller and Johannes Bell.1:28 They were brought into the room like prisoners being led to the dock.1:34 They did not look at the crowd.1:37 They looked only at the treaty.1:40 For six months, we’d worked in Paris on the terms.1:44 But "we" never included Germany.1:47 They were simply handed the bill.1:50 Article two-hundred-thirty-one.1:53 The War Guilt Clause.1:55 A single sentence that made a whole nation the villain.2:00 I’d translated their counter-proposals.2:03 I saw them all rejected.2:05 This wasn't a negotiation.2:07 It was a verdict.2:09 Even the Chinese delegation, our supposed allies, were refusing to sign.2:15 They were losing territory to Japan in this deal.2:20 A footnote for everyone else in the room.2:23 An earthquake for them.2:25 Then came the moment.2:27 The signing.2:28 There was no grand music.2:30 No solemn speech.2:32 Just a scraping sound.2:34 The sound of a pen nib scratching across heavy paper.2:39 It took less than an hour.2:41 Herr Müller signed first.2:43 As he straightened up, I saw it.2:46 A single tear tracing a path down his cheek.2:50 He didn't wipe it away.2:52 He just stood there, his face a mask of forced composure while his eyes screamed.2:59 An English correspondent near me scribbled in her notepad.3:04 I later read her words: “An historic moment without a thrill.” She was right.3:11 It felt… administrative.3:13 A cold, necessary piece of paperwork to close the books on ten million dead.3:20 When it was over, the German delegates were gone in an instant.3:25 No handshakes.3:27 No final words.3:28 Just an empty space at the table where they had been.3:33 The Allied delegates began to chat amongst themselves, a low murmur filling the vacuum.3:40 As I was gathering my papers, I heard one of the palace servers, a man named Jean, speaking to a guard.3:49 He gestured at the gilded room, at the powerful men.3:54 "The real people were not there," he said with a shrug.3:59 "They were sweeping out mademoiselle’s room and smoking a secret cigarette on the stair." I walked out of that palace, the words of the treaty echoing in my head.4:13 The ink was still drying on the page.4:17 But I had this terrible, sinking feeling that the story wasn't over.4:23 That this treaty wasn't a full stop.4:26 It was just a comma.
