0:00 the first thing i noticed wasn't the jolt it was my tea last week we stood in a quiet operating room watching a surgeon hold a human heart this week we're on the deck of a ship that has no heart at all just a hole in its side where the ice went in my tea and its tin mug0:22 just slid a few inches across the mess table the floor wasn't flat anymore it had a gentle almost questioning tilt a few of the lads laughed said the old man was turning her sharp but we were in the middle of the atlantic there's nothing to turn for when the call came for all hands on deck the air0:47 was cold but the mood wasn't panic not yet it was confusion up on the first class promenade men in tuxedos stood with their wives in shimmering dresses clutching little dogs they looked at the stars they made jokes an officer told them it was a precaution a formality we were unsinkable after all you'll read in the reports that1:13 order was maintained what they mean is first class order was maintained two decks below i saw a steward with a set jaw and white knuckles holding a gate shut behind it were faces from ireland from sweden from places with no coastline at all their eyes wide with a fear the men in tuxedos couldn't even imagine they didn't1:34 speak the language they just knew the floor was wrong my job was simple uncover lifeboat number seven help the passengers in easy except we'd never done it not for real we'd had drills sure but they were a joke swing the boats out swing them back in we never lowered a fully loaded boat 70 feet down the side1:56 of a ship in the dark the ropes were stiff with new paint the pulleys groaned and there weren't enough we all knew it even if we didn't say it we'd walk past the empty spaces on the deck where more boats were supposed to be budget cuts they said extra space for the promenade for the dogs the deck2:16 chairs2:19 and then the music stopped the string quartet had been playing rags trying to keep it all feeling like a party that had gone on a bit too long but in the middle of a note silence the tilt went from a question to an answer a terrible steep final answer the lights flickered buzzed and died and in that2:46 sudden total darkness we heard it a deep groaning roar from inside the belly of the ship everything not bolted down was coming loose pianos dinner plates people it wasn't a ship anymore it was an avalanche i don't remember getting into the water i just remember being in it the cold was a physical blow a fist to the3:16 chest that stole your breath and never gave it back i clung to a piece of wreckage a carved bit of wood from some fancy staircase i'd never been allowed to use all around me was the noise a thousand people shouting praying screaming a sound he can't describe and can't forget and above it all the ship its stern3:38 was pointed straight up at the sky a black tower against the stars light still burning in a few rooms it hung there for what felt like an hour a final impossible monument and then with a sigh that seemed to shake the ocean itself it slipped beneath the waves the noise of the people lasted longer but not much4:00 i never forgot the stars i never seen so many no city lights no ships glow just ice and stars and the quiet pleading of a thousand voices shrinking to a 100 and then to none just a gentle lapping of water against my bit of wood
