0:00 The windows of the Pennsylvania State House were kept shut for secrecy, but the real reason was the horseflies.0:09 They swarmed from a livery stable nearby, and the delegates inside decided they’d rather swelter in the July heat than be bitten.0:20 So they boiled in their own wool coats and argued about treason.0:25 My job was to be invisible.0:28 And to keep the ink from drying out.0:31 Two pots for each table.0:33 And a fresh quill for any man who snapped his in frustration, which happened more than you’d think.0:41 They called me William.0:43 Or sometimes just…’boy’.0:45 I brought cool water from the well, and I blotted sweat from parchment before it could smear a word.0:54 I saw things.0:55 I saw Thomas Jefferson, tall and freckled, who couldn’t sit still.1:01 He’d pace the back of the room, twisting a silver cufflink, his lips moving silently.1:08 He wasn’t practicing a speech.1:10 He was counting the votes in his head, over and over.1:15 I saw Benjamin Franklin, so old and heavy in the heat, that he sometimes seemed to fall asleep in his chair.1:24 But his eyes were never fully closed.1:27 He’d watch the room through his spectacles, watching who spoke to whom during the breaks, who clapped who on the shoulder.1:38 He was mapping the currents of power while pretending to nap.1:43 These men… they weren’t giants.1:45 They were merchants worried about their ships, lawyers worried about their contracts, farmers worried about their harvest.1:56 I heard one delegate from a southern colony complain about the cost of his rented rooms in Philadelphia… in the same breath he used to speak of liberty.2:09 They were all terrified.2:11 Not of the King.2:12 Not of his armies.2:14 They were terrified of each other.2:17 That someone would break.2:19 That someone would get a better deal from the Crown and sell the rest of them out.2:26 We think of this as a moment of pure, unified conviction.2:31 It’s not.2:31 It was a startup.2:33 A desperate, under-funded, contentious startup, run by a board of directors who mostly couldn't stand each other.2:42 And the document they were signing wasn’t a mission statement.2:48 It was a suicide pact.2:50 It was a list of names for the hangman.2:53 The closest thing I’ve seen to it in our time?2:57 Is a group of founders in a garage, betting everything they have on an idea no one else believes in.3:05 Making an irreversible break with the dominant power—be it a market leader or a monarchy.3:13 The analogy holds in the structure of the risk, the secrecy, the frayed nerves.3:20 But it breaks on the consequences.3:23 The startup founder loses their money.3:26 These men were betting their lives.3:29 And the lives of their families.3:32 That difference is everything.3:34 The moment that sticks with me… is the signing itself.3:39 John Hancock, the chairman of this little venture, picked up the quill.3:45 My quill.3:46 The one I’d just sharpened.3:48 And he signed his name.3:50 Large.3:50 So large, he said, that King George could read it without his spectacles.3:56 It was a performance.3:58 An act of bravado from the wealthiest man in the room, the one with the most to lose and the most flair for the dramatic.4:09 But then the next man came up.4:11 A smaller man, from a smaller colony.4:14 And his hand was shaking.4:16 I saw it.4:17 He put the quill to the page, and he looked at Hancock, and then he looked at the door, as if the soldiers were about to burst in.4:28 And in that moment, he wasn’t a Founder.4:32 He was just a man, very far from home, hoping the ink wouldn't bleed.4:38 We look back on that room as a sacred space.4:41 But that day, it was just a room.4:44 Hot, smelly, and full of frightened men making a choice.4:49 History isn’t made by giants.4:51 It’s made by people who are afraid, and do it anyway.4:56 The work of being invisible is seeing things as they are.5:01 Not as the portraits would have you believe.
