0:00 Wikipedia exists in two hundred and ninety-nine different languages, including Old Church Slavonic and...0:07 Cheyenne.0:07 That kind of deep, specific strangeness reminds me of the dancing plague of 1518 we covered last time—a historical event so bizarre it feels like it couldn't be real.0:19 The internet's biggest encyclopedia is also its biggest cabinet of curiosities, and there's one button that holds the key to all of it.0:29 A button most people have never clicked.0:31 It's the "Random article" link.0:34 And no, it's not just a novelty for when you're bored.0:37 It is the entire philosophy of Wikipedia made into a single function.0:42 Think about how you use the internet.0:45 You search.0:46 You follow links.0:47 You get algorithmically-fed content based on what you already like.0:51 Everything is about intent.0:53 Your intent.0:54 But the random button is designed to do the exact opposite.0:58 It's engineered to REMOVE your intent from the process of discovery.1:03 It’s the modern version of spinning a globe, closing your eyes, and letting your finger land where it may.1:11 Or pulling a dusty book off a library shelf just because you like the look of its spine.1:17 It’s a tool for deliberately injecting serendipity into your day, forcing you to encounter something you would never, ever have typed into a search bar.1:27 And here’s the turn.1:29 This whole sprawling, chaotic, serendipitous project...1:33 it was never the plan.1:34 Wikipedia started as a side-show.1:36 A little feeder project for a "real" encyclopedia called Nupedia—you know, one with experts and peer review and all the proper credentials.1:46 The co-founder, Larry Sanger, said his idea was that the public wiki would just be a way to "develop a stream of content that could be fed into the Nupedia process." But the side project, the one open to everyone, grew so fast and so uncontrollably that it completely swallowed the original idea.2:07 The public stream became the entire ocean.2:10 Today it has over thirty-eight million pages, with twenty thousand new articles added every single day.2:17 A project that big and that chaotic is impossible to navigate with intent alone.2:23 You NEED a little randomness to even begin to grasp its scale.2:27 But this gets to the heart of what Wikipedia actually is.2:31 It's not just a database.2:33 It's a deeply, weirdly human community.2:36 And you see it in the most unexpected places.2:39 For example, they have something called the "last topic pool." It's a page where Wikipedians vote on what the very last article on Wikipedia should be, if the site were ever to shut down.2:52 It's this incredible mix of gallows humor and profound self-awareness.2:57 They are literally planning for their own obsolescence.3:01 And the community rule is that the very last edit ever made on Wikipedia will be on that page, announcing the winner.3:09 It's a project so vast it contains instructions for its own ending.3:14 That’s the kind of thing you only find when you stop looking for what you want, and open yourself up to what's there.3:22 The random button isn't a gimmick.3:24 It’s a philosophical stand.3:26 It’s a throwback to an earlier version of the internet, one that was less about efficiency and more about exploration.3:34 In a world of search bars and recommendation engines designed to give you more of what you already know, the random button is a small act of rebellion.3:45 It’s a bet that the most important thing you can learn today is something you didn’t even know to ask about.3:52 It's not there to give you an answer.3:55 It's there to change your question.
