About this episode
Unraveling the century-old mystery that’s stumped codebreakers and inspired wild theories worldwide.
0:00
For over a century, the codebreakers who cracked German Enigma and Japanese Purple have been utterly defeated by a single, two-hundred-and-forty-page book.
0:12
It’s a completely different kind of intelligence challenge than what we talked about in Episode 39 with Julius Neubronner’s pigeon cameras.
0:22
Instead of a clever way to see the known world from a new angle, this is a document that seems to come from a world that doesn't exist at all.
0:33
It’s called the Voynich Manuscript.
0:36
And it’s either the most important book nobody can read, or the most elaborate practical joke in history.
0:44
The manuscript itself was rediscovered in 1912 by an antique book dealer named Wilfrid Voynich.
0:52
Carbon dating puts its creation somewhere in the early fifteenth century.
0:57
It's written on vellum, with a quill pen, in an alphabet that appears absolutely nowhere else on Earth.
1:05
It's not Latin, it's not a known cipher, it’s… something else.
1:10
And the text is just the beginning.
1:13
The book is filled with illustrations.
1:16
But they only make it stranger.
1:18
There's a botanical section, with drawings of plants.
1:22
Except… botanists have identified maybe a dozen of them.
1:27
The rest are fantasies.
1:28
They have the shape of plants, the logic of roots and stems and leaves, but they're cobbled together from parts of different species, or they have features that just don't occur in nature.
1:43
It’s like a dream of a garden.
1:45
Then you get to the astronomical section.
1:48
You see suns and moons and stars, but they're arranged in these bizarre, concentric diagrams that don't match any known cosmology—not Ptolemy's, not Copernicus's, nothing.
2:02
And the weirdest part?
2:03
The so-called 'biological' section.
2:06
It's page after page of small, naked women, mostly in groups, bathing in pools and tubes of green liquid.
2:14
They're connected by these intricate, plumbing-like structures.
2:19
It looks like a schematic for… something.
2:22
But what?
2:23
A public bath?
2:24
An alchemical process?
2:26
An alien reproductive cycle?
2:28
No one has a clue.
2:29
So where have we seen this before?
2:32
This shape of a mystery?
2:34
Every time we try to solve the Voynich, we end up just revealing our own biases.
2:40
The cryptographers see a complex, multi-layered cipher.
2:44
So they run statistical analyses.
2:47
And guess what?
2:48
The word frequency follows something called Zipf's Law, just like real languages do.
2:55
So it can't be gibberish.
2:56
But...
2:57
no proposed decryption has ever worked.
3:00
Not one.
3:01
Then the historians and linguists look at it.
3:04
Maybe it’s a lost natural language, written in a unique script.
3:09
A 'proto-Romance' language, or a creole from a forgotten community.
3:14
This is the romantic theory.
3:16
The problem is, if it were a real language, you'd expect to see corrections, smudges, the signs of a human hand writing it.
3:26
But the script is almost flawless.
3:29
It looks like it was copied, perfectly, from another source.
3:33
So that leads to the other big theory: it's a hoax.
3:37
An incredibly sophisticated one, designed by some fifteenth-century con artist to sell to a rich, gullible patron—maybe even the emperor Rudolf the Second, who was obsessed with alchemy and the occult.
3:53
This feels like a modern explanation, right?
3:56
A piece of conceptual art before its time.
3:59
The problem is, creating a two-hundred-and-forty-page document with language-like statistics would be almost harder than just encrypting a real text.
4:11
Why go to all that trouble?
4:13
This is the real trap of the Voynich Manuscript.
4:17
It’s a perfect mirror.
4:18
You see in it whatever you're trained to look for.
4:22
And that’s the pattern it shares not with other codes, but with things like Rorschach tests, or even modern AI hallucinations.
4:32
The system produces something that has the texture of meaning, and we pour our own intelligence into the gaps, desperate to make it make sense.
4:43
We’re pattern-matching animals, and this book is our ultimate, unsolved test.
4:49
After all the supercomputers, all the brilliant minds from World War Two codebreaker William Friedman to today's AI algorithms, we are no closer to an answer than Wilfrid Voynich was in 1912.
5:04
The book's endurance, its stubborn refusal to be known, is its central feature.
5:10
It’s a message that has survived for six hundred years, and the message might just be that some things cannot be decoded.
