0:00 Okay so get this.0:01 The first-place finisher in the 1904 Olympic Marathon, a guy named Fred Lorz, crossed the finish line to thunderous applause… after riding for eleven miles of the race in his manager’s car.0:14 He waved at the crowd, he was about to accept the gold medal from Alice Roosevelt, the president's daughter, and then someone called him out.0:25 His defense?0:25 He said it was just a joke.0:27 A JOKE.0:28 He dropped out of the race from exhaustion after nine miles, hitched a ride, and when the car broke down near the stadium, he just...0:38 jogged the rest of the way in and decided to pretend he won.0:42 This is the part that gets me.0:44 This wasn't even the weirdest thing that happened in that race.0:49 Not by a long shot.0:50 This entire event was a disaster-piece, a comedy of errors orchestrated by a guy named James Sullivan who, for some reason, wanted to test the effects of "purposeful dehydration." So on a ninety-degree day, on a course covered in dust kicked up by the cars he had following the runners, he allowed exactly ONE water stop.1:13 At mile twelve.1:14 The result wasn't a test of endurance.1:17 It was a mass hallucination event.1:19 One guy, William Garcia, was found lying on the road, bleeding internally from inhaling so much dust.1:27 He almost died.1:28 The man who actually won, Thomas Hicks, was basically carried across the finish line by his trainers.1:35 They propped him up while he shuffled his feet.1:39 Why?1:39 Because to keep him going, his trainers had given him a cocktail of strychnine sulfate—a literal rat poison—and brandy.1:47 This was his performance enhancer.1:50 The first documented case of doping in modern Olympic history, and it was considered...1:56 totally fine.1:57 He got the gold medal.1:59 The guy who was basically a puppet, fueled by poison and booze.2:03 And the rest of the field?2:05 It’s a clown car of suffering.2:07 A Cuban mailman named Andarín Carvajal showed up in street clothes, lost all his money gambling on the way to the race, and had to run in trousers he cut into shorts.2:19 He stopped mid-race to eat apples from an orchard, but they were rotten, so he got sick and had to take a nap.2:27 A nap!2:28 Two of the first Black Africans to compete in the Olympics, Len Taunyane and Jan Mashiani, were on the course and probably would have placed well...2:38 except they were chased a mile off-course by a pack of aggressive dogs.2:43 So what is going on here?2:45 Why does this one event feel like a collective fever dream?2:50 Because it’s a perfect snapshot of what happens when ambition and ideology get way ahead of actual knowledge.2:57 The 1904 Olympics were part of the St.3:00 Louis World's Fair, this grand spectacle of "progress" and modernity.3:05 And they tried to graft that onto an ancient Greek ideal—the marathon.3:10 They wanted to stage a heroic epic.3:13 But they did it with the brute-force arrogance of the industrial age.3:18 They had the cars, the dust, the bizarre "scientific" theory about dehydration.3:23 They were so obsessed with the performance of human achievement that they created conditions that made actual achievement nearly impossible.3:34 We see this pattern all the time, right?3:36 When we try to force a narrative of triumph onto a messy reality.3:41 It’s the startup founder promising to change the world before they’ve figured out if their product even works.3:49 It’s the politician staging a photo op in a disaster zone.3:53 It’s the desperate attempt to look like you have it all figured out, when in reality, you’re just a guy taking a nap in an orchard or getting a lift in your manager’s car.4:06 The 1904 marathon wasn't a race.4:08 It was a preview of a very modern problem: the gap between the story we want to tell about ourselves… and the dusty, chaotic, and sometimes poisonous reality of how we actually get there.
