0:00 On January fifteenth, 1919, a wave of molasses twenty-five feet high slammed into Boston’s North End, moving at thirty-five miles an hour.0:09 Last week, in episode eighty-nine, we talked about London's Great Manure Crisis—a disaster that built up slowly, over decades.0:18 This was the opposite.0:19 This was VIOLENT and it was instant.0:22 Twenty-one people died.0:23 One hundred and fifty were injured.0:26 By molasses.0:26 So here’s what happened.0:28 The Purity Distilling Company had a massive steel tank in the middle of a dense, working-class neighborhood.0:36 Fifty feet tall, holding over two million gallons of molasses.0:40 Now, why molasses?0:41 Because they were fermenting it to produce industrial alcohol, a key ingredient for munitions in World War One.0:49 The war was over, but prohibition was coming, so they were rushing to produce as much ethanol as possible before it became illegal.0:58 The tank was a known problem.1:00 It was built cheap and fast.1:02 It leaked so badly that local kids would scoop up the drips with sticks for a free snack.1:08 The company’s solution?1:09 They painted the tank brown to HIDE the leaks.1:12 When employees warned executives about the groaning sounds the tank made when it was filled, the response was literally, "The tank still stands." On January fifteenth, it was an unseasonably warm day, just above freezing.1:28 A fresh, massive shipment of molasses from the Caribbean had just topped off the tank the day before.1:35 The warmer temperature caused the molasses inside to expand.1:39 The cold, brittle steel couldn't take it.1:41 And at around 12:30 PM, with a sound like a machine gun barrage as the rivets popped, the tank didn't just fail.1:49 It EXPLODED.1:50 Two-point-three million gallons of thick, viscous fluid became a weapon.1:55 It wasn't like a wave of water you could swim in.1:58 The Boston Globe wrote, "Snared in its flood was to be stifled.2:03 Once it smeared a head...2:04 there was no coughing off the sticky mass." It was a tsunami of goo.2:09 It ripped a firehouse from its foundation, killing a firefighter inside.2:14 It buckled the tracks of the elevated railway, nearly sending a train plunging into the street.2:20 It flattened buildings and drowned horses still in their stables.2:25 Rescuers, including over a hundred sailors from the USS Nantucket docked nearby, waded into the mess, but it was like quicksand.2:34 The cold air made the molasses congeal, trapping victims.2:38 The cleanup took weeks.2:39 They had to use firehoses to spray salt water from the harbor just to dissolve the sticky coating on every single cobblestone.2:48 For decades after, on hot summer days, residents said the whole neighborhood still smelled faintly sweet.2:55 Now, here's where the story gets its modern shape.2:59 The company, United States Industrial Alcohol, immediately tried to blame anarchists, claiming the tank was sabotaged.3:07 It was a convenient story in the era of the Red Scare.3:10 But the families of the victims didn't buy it.3:14 They sued.3:14 And this is where we see a pattern, right?3:17 It's the same shape as the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire, or countless mine collapses.3:23 A disaster happens, the owners blame outside forces or bad luck, and the victims have to fight to prove it was simple, predictable, human GREED.3:33 The case became a landmark.3:35 It was one of the first major class-action lawsuits in Massachusetts history.3:40 It dragged on for five years.3:42 Investigators built a scale model.3:45 They tested steel samples.3:46 And the final verdict was absolutely damning.3:49 The court found the company was completely liable.3:53 The tank's walls were waaay too thin, the steel was too brittle, and the company had ignored every single warning sign.4:01 It wasn't sabotage.4:02 It was NEGLIGENCE.4:04 The company was forced to pay out over six hundred thousand dollars in damages—that’s over ten million in today's money.4:12 But the real legacy wasn't the cash.4:14 It was the law.4:15 The Great Molasses Flood directly led to Massachusetts, and then other states, passing laws requiring that professional, certified engineers had to review and sign off on any major construction plans.4:29 Building codes, safety inspections, professional liability for architects and engineers—so much of the boring, bureaucratic stuff that keeps our world from collapsing around us got its start here.4:43 It’s easy to laugh at the idea of a molasses flood.4:46 It sounds absurd, like something from a cartoon.4:49 But the reason you can trust that the building you're in right now is safe, the reason a bridge doesn't just fall down, is because of tragedies like this.5:00 Our modern world of safety regulations wasn't planned.5:04 It was built, piece by painful piece, on the foundations of forgotten disasters—even the sticky, ridiculous, and horrifying ones.
