0:00 In November 1932, the Australian military deployed machine guns against an enemy that couldn't be intimidated, couldn't be reasoned with, and could run thirty miles an hour.0:12 Admin, I know in our last episode we were digging through Wikipedia’s cabinet of curiosities, but this story feels like it was ripped straight from that collection, except it's one hundred percent real history.0:27 It’s called the Great Emu War.0:29 And yes, it’s exactly what it sounds like.0:32 Okay, so picture this.0:33 It’s Western Australia, just after World War One.0:37 The government has given thousands of returning soldiers plots of marginal land to grow wheat.0:43 It’s a tough life, but they’re making it work.0:47 Then the Great Depression hits, and wheat prices completely tank.0:51 The farmers are already on the brink.0:54 And that’s when the emus show up.0:56 Not just a few.0:57 Twenty.0:58 THOUSAND.0:59 of them.0:59 Migrating from the interior, looking for water, and they stumble upon this massive, irrigated, all-you-can-eat wheat buffet the farmers have so kindly planted.1:10 For the emus, it’s a miracle.1:12 For the farmers, it’s the final straw.1:15 They're watching their livelihoods get eaten and trampled.1:19 So, a delegation of these ex-soldiers goes to the Minister of Defence, Sir George Pearce, and they ask for help.1:27 They know how to use machine guns.1:30 They just need the guns.1:31 And unbelievably, he says yes.1:33 He agrees to send in the army.1:36 To fight birds.1:37 This is where the story goes from desperate to just… completely absurd.1:42 The army sends Major G.P.W.1:44 Meredith of the Royal Australian Artillery, along with two soldiers and two Lewis machine guns.1:50 They have ten thousand rounds of ammunition.1:53 The plan is simple: find the emus, kill the emus.1:57 The first engagement happens on November second.2:00 They spot a flock of about fifty birds.2:03 The soldiers get into position, the trap is set, they open fire.2:08 And… the emus just scatter.2:10 They don't cluster up like a terrified mob.2:13 They break into tiny groups and run in every direction.2:16 The soldiers, firing into this chaos, manage to kill maybe a dozen.2:21 The rest just vanish over the horizon.2:24 Major Meredith is stunned.2:26 He discovers that these birds are practically bulletproof.2:30 They’re covered in thick, oily feathers and dense muscle.2:34 He later wrote in his report, and this is a direct quote, "If we had a military division with the bullet-carrying capacity of these birds it would face any army in the world." He’s basically admitting these emus are built like little feathered tanks.2:52 Sooo they try a new tactic.2:54 They mount one of the Lewis guns on a truck.2:57 A mobile assault unit!2:58 What could possibly go wrong?3:00 Well, the truck can't keep up with the birds on the rough terrain.3:05 The ride is so bumpy the gunner can’t get a clear shot.3:09 The whole disastrous chase scene ends when the truck swerves to avoid an emu and crashes through a fence.3:16 They don’t hit a single bird.3:18 After a week of this farce, they'd used over two thousand five hundred rounds of ammunition to kill...3:26 maybe fifty emus.3:27 The whole operation was a joke.3:29 The media caught wind of it and had a field day, publishing cartoons of emus fighting with bayonets.3:36 Within a month, the military was ordered to withdraw in complete humiliation.3:42 They lost.3:42 The emus won.3:43 This whole episode is a perfect, tiny crystal of a much bigger idea.3:48 It's the classic human mistake.3:50 We see a problem, and our first instinct is to point our most powerful, most complex tool at it and expect a result.3:59 We think overwhelming force is a substitute for actual understanding.4:03 But the emus weren't an army.4:05 They didn't have a strategy.4:07 They were just… being emus.4:09 A force of nature acting according to its own logic.4:13 And you can't use military tactics on a drought, or a market crash, or a flock of hungry birds.4:20 The Great Emu War wasn't just a failure.4:23 It was a category error.4:24 It was lost the moment they thought it was a war they could actually win.
