0:00 On October seventeenth, 1814, a fifteen-foot wave of beer crashed through central London.0:06 And if you thought Parliament soaking its curtains during the Great Stink of 1858 was the peak of London’s bizarre urban disasters, you are about to see just how strange history can get.0:20 This wasn't some minor spill.0:22 This was a full-blown industrial catastrophe caused by nearly one and a half million liters of dark porter beer.0:30 It all started at the Meux and Company Brewery.0:33 They had these ENORMOUS wooden fermentation vats, twenty-two feet tall, held together with massive iron hoops.0:41 Around four-thirty in the afternoon, a clerk named George Crick noticed one of the seven-hundred-pound iron rings had slipped.0:51 He told his supervisor.0:52 The supervisor’s response?0:54 He said, and this is a direct quote, "no harm whatever would ensue." He told Crick he'd get it fixed later.1:02 About an hour later...1:04 the vat exploded.1:05 The force was so immense it didn't just break, it shattered.1:09 The initial blast knocked the valve off a neighboring vat, which then burst, starting a chain reaction.1:17 Suddenly, a tidal wave of warm, fermenting beer—hundreds of thousands of gallons—smashed through the brewery’s twenty-five-foot-high back wall.1:27 Bricks went flying.1:29 The wave poured into the streets of the St Giles slum next door, a place of extreme poverty where entire families lived in crowded basement apartments.1:40 The beer filled those cellars in minutes.1:43 Eight people died.1:44 A four-year-old girl named Hannah Bamfield.1:47 A fourteen-year-old servant, Eleanor Cooper, crushed by the collapsing wall.1:53 An entire group of five mourners, gathered at a wake for a two-year-old boy, were swept away.2:00 So, what happens when a corporation’s product literally drowns a neighborhood?2:05 You’d expect lawsuits, right?2:07 Justice for the families.2:09 But this is 1814.2:10 The brewery was taken to court, but the whole thing was over before it really began.2:17 The verdict?2:18 The London Beer Flood was officially declared an ACT OF GOD.2:22 Let that sink in.2:23 Not negligence.2:24 Not a failure to maintain equipment.2:27 An Act of God.2:28 As if a poorly secured iron hoop was a matter of divine intervention.2:33 Because of that ruling, the brewery was found not guilty.2:37 They paid ZERO compensation to the victims' families.2:41 But here’s the part that gets me.2:43 The brewery itself suffered huge financial losses, about twenty-three thousand pounds.2:50 It nearly went bankrupt.2:51 But did it?2:52 No.2:52 The brewery successfully petitioned Parliament and got all the excise taxes it had paid on the millions of pints of lost beer refunded.3:02 So the company that ignored the warning sign, whose exploding vat killed eight people...3:09 got a bailout.3:10 The families got nothing.3:12 We see this pattern again and again, don't we?3:15 A disaster happens, a tragedy unfolds, and the financial system finds a way to protect the capital, while the human cost is just written off.3:25 The shape of this story feels disturbingly modern.3:29 It’s the same logic that protects polluters from cleanup costs or banks from the consequences of a crash.3:37 The system absorbs the financial loss, but the human loss is deemed an externality.3:43 An accident.3:44 An Act of God.3:45 This one event, this bizarre flood of beer, is a perfect miniature of a much larger story.3:51 It’s the story of the Industrial Revolution itself.3:55 A story of progress and profit moving way, way faster than safety, or justice, or basic human decency.4:02 The technology for making beer in vats the size of a small house existed.4:08 The technology for making them truly safe did not—or at least, it wasn't a priority.4:14 After the flood, breweries slowly began switching from those massive wooden barrels to more secure, lined concrete vats.4:23 Because that’s the other pattern here, isn't it?4:26 Safety regulations are almost always written after the fact, in response to a body count.4:33 The London Beer Flood wasn't just a freak accident.4:36 It was an accident waiting to happen.4:39 It was the direct result of a system that prioritized production over precaution, a culture that looked at a seven-hundred-pound metal ring slipping off a vat holding 300,000 gallons of liquid and decided, "no harm whatever would ensue."
