0:00 It started with one woman, Frau Troffea, dancing alone in a street in Strasbourg for six straight days.0:07 This was July, 1518.0:08 And just like we saw in Episode 96 with the Tambora eruption, where one volcano triggered a bizarre 'year without a summer' across the globe, here we see a different kind of inexplicable contagion — one that started in a single person's body and spread to an entire city.0:27 Because Frau Troffea wasn't alone for long.0:30 Within a week, thirty-four other people had joined her.0:34 By August, the number of dancers had swelled to four HUNDRED.0:38 And they weren't celebrating.0:40 They were dancing uncontrollably, their faces contorted in agony, their bodies jerking and twisting until they collapsed.0:48 The city chronicles from the time are clear: people were dying.0:53 Dozens of them.0:54 From heart attacks, strokes, and sheer, brutal exhaustion.0:58 So what do you do when your city is seized by a plague of dancing?1:02 The local authorities were completely baffled.1:05 They consulted physicians, who, lacking any germ theory or modern neurology, diagnosed it as "hot blood." Their prescription?1:14 More dancing.1:15 Seriously.1:16 They figured the dancers just needed to sweat the fever out.1:20 So the city council ordered a guild hall to be cleared out, they built a wooden stage in the grain market, and they even hired professional musicians to provide a soundtrack for the affliction.1:33 They thought if they just let the mania run its course, it would burn itself out.1:39 Instead, it just gave the whole nightmare a public stage and encouraged even more people to join.1:46 So the question that hangs over this event, five hundred years later, is...1:51 what on earth was going on?1:53 There are two main theories, and this is where you start to see patterns we've seen elsewhere.1:59 The first is physical.2:01 It's the ergot poisoning theory.2:03 Ergot is a mold that grows on damp rye, which was the staple grain for the poor in that region.2:09 And this mold contains a chemical that's...2:12 well, it's the precursor to LSD.2:15 Ingesting it can cause muscle spasms, convulsions, and intense hallucinations.2:20 This theory has been used to explain other historical panics, most famously the Salem Witch Trials.2:27 A bad harvest, a damp summer, and suddenly you have a population tripping on hallucinogenic bread mold.2:34 It sounds plausible, right?2:36 A physical cause for a bizarre social event.2:39 But here's the catch.2:40 Ergotism typically causes violent, uncontrolled seizures.2:44 Not coordinated, rhythmic dancing that can go on for days.2:48 The symptoms don't quite match.2:50 That brings us to the second theory, which is psychological.2:55 Mass psychogenic illness.2:56 Or, put simply, extreme, unbearable stress manifesting as a physical epidemic.3:02 You have to remember what life was like in Strasbourg in 1518.3:06 It was AWFUL.3:07 They were suffering from famine, political instability, and terrifying new diseases like syphilis.3:14 There was a profound sense of dread and helplessness, steeped in religious superstition.3:20 The theory goes that for a population pushed to its absolute breaking point, their collective psyche just...3:27 snapped.3:28 The dancing became a kind of trance state, a desperate, hysterical release valve for a whole society's anxiety.3:36 We've seen this shape before, in smaller scales — moments where a group of people under pressure all start experiencing the same physical symptom with no organic cause.3:47 It's the mind forcing the body to act out a crisis it can't process any other way.3:53 And in this case, it was contagious.3:55 Not like a virus, but like an idea.3:58 One person starts, and the suggestion plants itself in the minds of other vulnerable people, and it just spreads.4:06 Ultimately, the authorities gave up on their 'more dancing' cure.4:10 They gathered up the remaining dancers, put them in wagons, and took them to a mountaintop shrine to pray for absolution.4:19 And then, as mysteriously as it began, the plague subsided.4:23 The dancing stopped.4:24 What the Dancing Plague really shows us is that the line between the mind and the body isn't just blurry, it can completely dissolve under pressure.4:34 It's a chilling reminder that a society can get sick just like a person can.4:40 And when it does, the symptoms can be stranger than anything we could possibly invent.
