0:00 On January fifteenth, 1919, a wave of molasses moving thirty-five miles per hour tore through Boston's North End.0:08 It sounds like something from a cartoon, I know.0:11 It has the same energy as using half a ton of dynamite on a beached whale, which, if you remember from our last episode, was a spectacularly bad idea.0:22 But the Boston disaster was no comedy.0:25 It killed twenty-one people, injured another one hundred fifty, and flattened an entire neighborhood.0:32 So here’s the scene.0:33 It’s an unseasonably warm winter day in Boston, about forty degrees Fahrenheit.0:39 In the busy North End, a commercial district packed with homes and warehouses, stood a truly colossal steel tank.0:47 Fifty feet tall, ninety feet wide.0:50 It held two-point-three million gallons of crude molasses for the Purity Distilling Company, which was using it to make industrial alcohol for munitions.1:01 Around lunchtime, without any warning, the tank just… let go.1:05 Witnesses reported a low rumble, then a sound like a machine gun as the steel rivets popped off the tank’s seams in a terrifying sequence.1:15 And then, a twenty-five-foot-high wall of thick, brown liquid exploded outwards.1:21 Thirty-five miles an hour.1:23 That's not a slow ooze.1:24 That's a battering ram.1:26 The pressure wave alone was enough to knock buildings clean off their foundations.1:32 It buckled the steel girders of the elevated railway track overhead and swept a train car right off the rails.1:40 Horses were killed instantly.1:42 People were picked up and thrown into walls or just… swallowed by the wave.1:47 And here’s the part that really gets me.1:50 As the wave spread, it cooled rapidly in the January air.1:54 It became thicker.1:56 More viscous.1:57 So victims who weren't killed by the initial impact found themselves trapped in a hardening, sticky tomb that made it impossible for rescuers to get to them in time.2:09 The cleanup took weeks.2:10 They used firehoses with saltwater from the harbor, but for months, everything in Boston was sticky.2:17 The harbor was brown all summer.2:20 The smell of molasses lingered in the North End, people said, for decades.2:25 So what happened?2:26 Why did a giant tank of sweetener just… rupture?2:30 And this is the point where the story stops being a historical curiosity and starts feeling incredibly modern.2:38 Where have we seen this before?2:40 The answer is… everywhere.2:42 This is the textbook story of preventable, man-made disaster.2:46 The tank was a rush job.2:48 It was built in 1915 to meet wartime demand, and it was shoddy from the start.2:54 It was never properly inspected.2:56 The steel was too thin.2:58 The engineering was garbage.3:00 And here’s the tell: it leaked from the day it was filled.3:04 Constantly.3:05 We have accounts of local kids bringing cups and buckets to collect the sweet drips.3:11 So what did the company, United States Industrial Alcohol, do about it?3:16 They painted the tank brown to hide the streaks.3:19 I mean, you can’t make this up.3:21 They literally painted over the problem.3:24 This is the Challenger disaster and its O-rings.3:28 It’s the Boeing 737 MAX and its software.3:31 It’s the "normalization of deviance"—when you see a small problem so many times without a catastrophe, you stop seeing it as a problem at all.3:41 You just see it as the way things are.3:44 The leaks were just part of the tank.3:46 Until they weren't.3:48 The final trigger was probably the temperature swing.3:52 A cold snap right after that warm day caused the metal to contract, putting immense stress on the already-failing seams.4:00 And then… pop.4:01 The company tried to blame anarchists, of course.4:05 Claimed the tank was bombed.4:07 They fought for years in court.4:09 But this became one of the first major class-action lawsuits in Massachusetts, and the plaintiffs’ lawyer brought in expert after expert.4:19 They proved, conclusively, it was structural failure.4:23 Pure and simple corporate negligence.4:26 The company paid out what would be millions in today's money.4:30 And the case led to new laws governing engineering and construction that are still on the books.4:37 It’s so easy to hear ‘The Great Molasses Flood’ and picture something slow and almost silly.4:43 But the reality was a freight train of viscous sugar that hit with the force of a tsunami and then suffocated its victims.4:52 The absurdity of the substance hides the brutal familiarity of the cause.4:58 It wasn't the molasses that killed twenty-one people.5:01 It was the hundred tiny decisions to ignore the leaks until they became a tidal wave.
