0:00 In 1738, a British sea captain named Robert Jenkins walked into the House of Commons and presented them with his own severed ear, pickled in a jar.0:09 Last week we talked about Australia's military getting outsmarted by a flock of emus, which felt like the absolute peak of historical absurdity.0:19 This week, we have a major European war that started over THAT ear.0:24 Okay, so to understand how this happens, you have to go back seven years earlier, to 1731.0:30 The Caribbean is a hotbed of tension.0:32 Britain and Spain are in a cold war over trade.0:36 Spain has this vast American empire, and they are fiercely protective of their trade monopoly.0:42 Britain, the rising naval power, is constantly trying to pry it open.0:47 There was this one treaty, the Asiento de Negros, that gave Britain the right to sell enslaved people in Spanish America, and—this is key—the right to send ONE ship of general goods, the Navío de Permiso, to a trade fair each year.1:02 Just one.1:03 Naturally, British merchants used this as a cover for massive amounts of smuggling.1:09 So the Spanish set up their own coast guard, the Guarda-Costa, to board and inspect any British ship they found.1:16 You can see where this is going.1:18 Captain Robert Jenkins is sailing his brig, the Rebecca, when he gets stopped by a Spanish ship.1:25 The Spanish commander, Julio León Fandiño, accuses him of smuggling.1:30 Things get heated.1:31 Fandiño draws his sword, pins Jenkins to a mast, and slices off his left ear.1:36 And then, according to Jenkins, the Spanish captain hands him the bloody ear and says, "Go, and tell your King that I will do the same to him if he is caught in the same." Now, here’s the part that gets me.1:50 Jenkins sails back to England, reports the incident, and… nothing happens.1:55 For SEVEN years.1:56 The story is just a minor diplomatic complaint, one of dozens.2:00 It's filed away.2:01 So what changed?2:02 British politics.2:04 By 1738, there's a powerful anti-government faction in Parliament.2:08 They're itching for a war with Spain, partly for trade, partly to weaken the Prime Minister, Robert Walpole, who is desperately trying to keep the peace.2:19 They need a story.2:20 A symbol.2:20 They need something that will make the public furious.2:24 And someone remembers the captain with the missing ear.2:28 This is a pattern you see again and again.2:31 It's the "Remember the Maine!" for the Spanish-American War.2:35 It's using a single, visceral event to ignite a conflict that was already politically desirable.2:41 The outrage isn't spontaneous; it's MANUFACTURED.2:45 They bring Jenkins before a parliamentary committee.2:48 And this time, he comes prepared.2:50 He gives this dramatic testimony, and then—the grand finale—he allegedly holds up the shriveled, pickled ear.2:58 The room goes wild.2:59 The story explodes across the country in pamphlets and political cartoons.3:04 It becomes pure propaganda.3:06 Jenkins is a national hero.3:08 The Spanish are barbaric villains.3:10 The pressure on Walpole becomes immense.3:13 He has no choice.3:14 In October 1739, Britain declares war on Spain.3:17 They literally called it The War of Jenkins' Ear.3:20 Here’s where the analogy to something like "Remember the Maine!" breaks down, though.3:26 This wasn't a short, decisive conflict.3:29 It was supposed to be a limited naval war in the Caribbean.3:33 But it spiraled.3:34 Britain attacks Spanish ports like Porto Bello in Panama and Cartagena in modern-day Colombia, with mixed success.3:42 But the real shock is how it bleeds into something much, much bigger.3:46 In 1740, the Holy Roman Emperor dies without a male heir, kicking off a massive European succession crisis.3:54 Suddenly, everyone is choosing sides.3:56 Spain and France on one side, Britain and Austria on the other.4:00 And just like that, the weird little colonial War of Jenkins' Ear gets completely absorbed into the continent-spanning War of the Austrian Succession.4:11 A fight that started over a smuggler's ear in the Caribbean became part of a nine-year global conflict fought in Europe, North America, and even India.4:21 It was a world war before the world wars.4:24 And the ending is the most cynical part of all.4:27 After nine years of fighting and hundreds of thousands of casualties, the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle is signed in 1748.4:35 And guess what?4:36 It basically just returns everything to the way it was before the war started.4:41 The original trade disputes that supposedly caused the whole thing?4:46 Barely even mentioned.4:47 The ear had served its purpose.4:49 It's such a sharp reminder that the trigger for a conflict is almost never the real cause.4:55 The story of the ear wasn't the reason for the war.4:59 It was the permission slip.5:01 It was the simple, gruesome, unforgettable story that gave politicians the cover they needed to do what they already wanted to do.
