0:00 In November 1932, the Australian military deployed two heavy Lewis machine guns and ten thousand rounds of ammunition against an advancing army of twenty thousand flightless birds.0:10 In episode one hundred and eighty, we tracked how William Sleeman manufactured the myth of organized bandit cults in India to justify imperial power.0:19 This is the exact inverse: the British Commonwealth waging an actual mechanized campaign against native wildlife, and losing every single tactical engagement.0:28 What changed that November was not just local crop damage in Western Australia, but the sudden realization that modern military hardware is utterly useless against an enemy that refuses to form a battle line.0:40 To understand how two Lewis guns ended up pointed at giant birds in the scrub, you have to rewind to the Great Depression.0:48 The Australian government had settled thousands of World War One veterans on marginal farmland around Campion and Walgoolan, out in Western Australia.0:56 These men were handed arid scrub, told to clear it with hand tools, and promised government subsidies to plant wheat.1:03 Then the Depression struck, wheat prices collapsed to pennies per bushel, and Canberra reneged on the payouts.1:10 The veterans were already broke and furious.1:12 Then, right on cue, the native ecology made its annual move.1:16 Emus breed on the coast and migrate inland after mating season; twenty thousand of them suddenly arrived at the newly cleared wheat fields, discovering thousands of acres of fresh water supplies and soft, edible grain.1:29 They did not just eat the wheat.1:31 They trampled miles of rabbit-proof fences, tearing massive holes that allowed hordes of wild rabbits to pour into the crops right behind them.1:39 The farmers, remembering their time in the trenches, did not ask the agricultural bureau for pest control.1:45 They went straight to the Minister of Defence, Sir George Pearce, and demanded military assistance.1:51 Pearce jumped at the chance.1:53 He thought it would be a quick political victory: good target practice for the Royal Australian Artillery, free publicity for the military, and a relief operation for struggling veterans.2:04 So he dispatched Major G.P.W.2:06 Meredith of the Seventh Heavy Battery, two gunners, and a camera crew from Movietone news to film the glorious triumph.2:13 The reality was a disaster from day one.2:15 Meredith assumed his team would set up the guns, open fire from long range, and mow the birds down in neat rows.2:22 On November second, they spotted fifty emus near Campion.2:25 But the birds spotted them first.2:27 Major Meredith ordered the men to ambush them, but the flock stayed stubbornly outside the effective range of the Lewis guns.2:34 When the gunners finally tried a burst, the birds scattered instantly in every direction.2:39 The machine gun could not pivot fast enough to track dozens of targets sprinting across broken dirt at thirty miles an hour.2:47 Two days later, Meredith set an elaborate ambush near a local dam, where a flock of more than one thousand birds had gathered.2:54 The soldiers hid until the flock was practically at point-blank range.2:58 They opened fire.2:59 The gun fired twelve rounds, jammed completely, and the flock dissolved into the bush within seconds.3:05 Out of a thousand targets at close range, they hit a dozen.3:09 Meredith even tried mounting a machine gun to the back of a truck to chase them down.3:14 But the scrub was full of boulders and fallen timber.3:17 The truck could not exceed twenty miles an hour without shaking its suspension to pieces, while the birds cut sharp corners at forty.3:25 The gunner spent the entire chase simply holding on for dear life, unable to aim a single shot.3:30 Where have we seen this before?3:32 The shape of this conflict is the classic breakdown of mechanized conventional warfare against asymmetric guerrilla tactics.3:39 The British army made the exact same mistake in the Boer War thirty years prior: assuming heavy, centralized firepower could sweep away a dispersed, fast-moving adversary operating in its home terrain.3:51 An Australian ornithologist named Dominic Serventy monitored the campaign and wrote that each flock appeared to have its own leader — a tall bird with black plumage that stood watch while the others fed.4:03 The second Meredith’s men made a move, the sentry gave a warning call, and the entire flock fragmented into dozens of small, independent survival units.4:12 The army was trying to shoot a swarm with a weapon built for the Western Front.4:17 By November eighth, the operation was an international laughingstock.4:21 Politicians in the Australian House of Representatives asked if medals were going to be struck for the emus, since the birds had clearly won every round.4:30 Defence Minister Pearce pulled the plug and ordered Meredith to retreat.4:34 In total, the army expended nearly a quarter of its ten-thousand-round stockpile to confirm fewer than three hundred casualties.4:42 The military hubris evaporated the moment the cameras were packed away.4:46 The real solution was not artillery or field officers at all.4:50 In 1934, the Western Australian government instituted a plain bounty system for local farmers, paired with subsidized fencing wire.4:57 Within six months, ordinary settlers with single-shot rifles accounted for nearly fifty-seven thousand bounties without a single government troop deployment.5:06 The Australian army walked into the red dust convinced that industrialized firepower could dictate terms to an entire ecosystem, only to discover that technology without contextual intelligence is just expensive noise.5:19 In the end, twenty thousand flightless birds routed an industrialized military simply by refusing to behave like soldiers.
