0:00 The vault was empty.0:01 On the Tuesday morning after the Easter Bank Holiday in 2015, the staff of the Hatton Garden Safe Deposit company discovered a hole.0:12 Not just a hole, but a gateway.0:15 A fifty-centimeter-thick concrete wall had been bored straight through, and on the other side, seventy-three safe deposit boxes lay open and empty.0:27 Fourteen million pounds in cash, gold, and diamonds… gone.0:32 Last week, we talked about the audacity of Bruce Reynolds and the Great Train Robbery.0:39 This… this was a different kind of audacity.0:43 Not the work of young men in their prime, but something else entirely.0:49 Something older.0:50 Imagine the scene.0:51 The police arrive.0:53 The Flying Squad.0:54 They see the sheer, brutalist ambition of it.0:58 A hole drilled with an industrial diamond-tipped core drill.1:03 The burglars abseiled down a lift shaft to even get to the vault.1:08 This wasn't a smash-and-grab.1:11 This was a siege.1:12 And for four long days over the holiday weekend, the burglars had won.1:18 They were inside, undisturbed, helping themselves to a king's ransom.1:24 It was, for a moment, perfect.1:26 The largest burglary in English legal history, and the perpetrators had simply vanished.1:34 The press called them ghosts.1:36 Master criminals.1:38 But the truth was so much better.1:40 The masterminds weren't some slick, high-tech crew.1:45 They were a handful of men in their sixties and seventies.1:49 Career criminals, yes, but old enough to be collecting pensions.1:55 They called themselves the "Diamond Wheezers." They planned the whole thing for nearly three years, meeting in a pub in Islington called The Castle.2:07 They were bored, you see.2:09 Bored with retirement.2:11 They wanted one last score.2:13 And you have to admit… they had the experience.2:17 They knew to hit on a bank holiday.2:20 They knew how to disable most of the alarms.2:24 They knew exactly what tools they needed.2:27 This was old-school craft.2:29 And for a while, that craft was enough.2:33 They drilled.2:34 They looted.2:35 They walked away with the score of a lifetime.2:39 The police had nothing.2:40 No alarms tripped in a way that mattered, no witnesses, no immediate suspects.2:47 The gang was home free, sitting on millions.2:51 And then… the whole beautiful, audacious thing started to unravel.2:56 It always comes down to the details, doesn't it?3:00 They disabled the alarms inside, but they missed one CCTV camera on the street.3:07 It caught them, clear as day, dressed in high-visibility jackets, looking like workmen, hauling their gear in a wheelie bin.3:17 Then there was the car.3:19 One of them, a man named Kenny Collins, used his own personal white Mercedes for a lookout run.3:27 His OWN car.3:28 Police traced the license plate.3:31 That one simple, lazy mistake gave investigators their first thread.3:36 And from that one thread, the whole tapestry came undone.3:41 The police put listening devices in the gang's cars.3:45 And what did they hear?3:47 They heard them bragging.3:49 Arguing over how to split the loot.3:52 Planning their next moves on recorded lines.3:56 They used their personal phones, which left a perfect digital map of their meetings.4:03 It was amateur hour.4:05 All that old-world experience, all that meticulous planning… undone by modern technology and simple, human ego.4:14 They were arrested, every last one of them.4:17 The great criminal masterminds were caught because they couldn't resist talking about how clever they'd been.4:27 Only about four million of the fourteen million pounds was ever recovered.4:33 The rest is just… gone.4:35 Melted down, re-cut, disappeared into the global stream of illicit wealth.4:41 The men themselves all went to prison.4:44 The audacious, brilliant, and deeply flawed heist was over.4:49 And all that’s left is the story of old men who tried to pull off one last masterpiece, and almost did — forgetting that in the modern world, you can't outrun a license plate.
