0:00 Sam Altman’s home was attacked for a second time this week.0:02 That’s the kind of flashpoint that reveals the raw nerves of an entire industry, and our job is to trace those nerves back to the source—to show you the conversations and the code driving the story.0:12 The attack wasn't an isolated event.0:14 It was the physical manifestation of a conversation that absolutely dominated Hacker News, a sprawling thread with hundreds of comments grappling with a terrifying question: will AI-driven inequality lead to real, physical violence?0:25 One user put it bluntly: "Gleefully taking away people’s livelihoods will be met with violence, and nothing good will come of it." That sentiment—that raw fear—is the backdrop for everything else happening right now.0:35 It's a dark mirror to the sheer technological optimism we're also seeing.0:38 Case in point: Apple quietly pushed out its new local AI model, Gemma4.0:42 This isn't some cloud-based behemoth.0:44 This runs on your Mac, offline.0:45 And the community is electric.0:47 The consensus is that it's surprisingly good for coding and chat, though it still fumbles complex tasks.0:52 But the trajectory is what matters.0:53 One comment captured the mood perfectly: "If a couple more iterations of this, say gemma6 is as good as current opus and runs completely locally...1:00 I won’t really bother with the cloud models." This is the first credible threat to the centralized AI service model from a major player.1:07 It’s a vision of decentralized, private AI that stands in stark contrast to the concentrated power that has people so anxious.1:13 And that anxiety isn't stopping people from building.1:15 The April 2026 "Ask HN: What Are You Working On?" thread is a testament to the relentless optimism of the individual developer.1:21 It pulled in over seven hundred comments.1:23 We saw everything from open-source AI voice clocks to a project called Tela.1:27 Get this—Tela is a self-hosted tool that tunnels your network traffic through an encrypted connection, but the killer feature is that it requires zero admin privileges.1:35 It's designed specifically for people to securely access their home machines from locked-down corporate laptops.1:40 It’s a beautiful, elegant piece of subversion, built right out in the open.1:44 It’s that classic hacker ethos in its purest form.1:46 Of course, for every step toward user empowerment, there's a reminder of who's in control.1:51 OpenAI silently removed the "Study Mode" feature from ChatGPT this week.1:54 It was basically just a well-crafted system prompt that helped users focus their research, but people loved it.1:59 And now it's gone.2:00 No announcement, no explanation.2:02 Users are frustrated, sharing workarounds and custom prompts to try and replicate it.2:06 It’s a small thing, sure, but it’s a perfect little microcosm of the platform risk everyone feels.2:11 You build your workflow on a service you don't own, and one day a feature you depend on can just...2:15 disappear.2:16 It reinforces that feeling of powerlessness that’s bubbling just under the surface.2:20 So let's go back to that attack on Sam Altman's home.2:22 And the discussion it’s connected to.2:24 Because when you see an event like that, the impulse is to ask: where have we seen this before?2:29 The easy answer is the Luddites.2:30 Right?2:31 Early nineteenth century, English textile workers smashing the new automated looms that were taking their jobs.2:36 It feels like a clean parallel.2:37 Technology threatens livelihoods, people react with violence.2:40 But the more you read the threads on Hacker News, the more that analogy falls apart.2:44 The Luddites were artisans.2:46 They had a specific, skilled craft that was being made obsolete by a specific machine.2:50 They attacked the machines themselves—the power looms, the stocking frames.2:53 They were fighting a very direct, tangible enemy.2:56 What’s happening now is… different.2:57 The anxiety isn't just about job replacement.2:59 It's deeper.3:00 It's about a perceived consolidation of power and wealth that feels unstoppable.3:04 No one is talking about smashing servers at an AWS data center.3:07 The anger, and the fear, is being directed at the people and the companies seen as the architects of this new world.3:12 And the conversation isn’t about stopping the technology.3:15 It’s about who benefits from it.3:17 There was this one comment that just stopped me in my tracks.3:20 A user named mbgerring wrote, "We invented something called ‘democracy’ to fix this, and then we allowed enough wealth to accumulate that the wealthy just bought it and nerfed it." That's not a Luddite argument.3:30 That’s not about a loom.3:31 That’s a fundamental critique of the political and economic system that AI is being plugged into.3:35 The fear isn't that AI is inherently evil.3:37 The fear is that it's the ultimate force multiplier for the inequality we already have.3:42 And this is where the conversation gets really uncomfortable.3:45 Because for every person saying—correctly—"There’s no version of reality where doing this, where these attacks, will solve any problem.3:51 Don’t," there's another person pointing grimly to history.3:54 That same user, mbgerring, also noted that historically, "the amount of violence it took to correct the overreach of organized money was not zero." And that’s the terrifying tightrope everyone is walking.4:04 People feel like the normal levers for change aren't working.4:07 Voting feels compromised.4:08 Protesting feels performative.4:09 So what’s left?4:10 This is the question that hangs over the entire industry.4:13 The attacks are a symptom, not the disease.4:15 The disease is a growing belief that a tiny handful of people are building a future that will enrich them beyond the dreams of kings, while leaving everyone else to fight for the scraps.4:24 And the technology is moving so fast that there’s no time to have a real societal debate about it.4:28 We’re all just passengers.4:29 So you have this extreme polarization.4:31 On one side, you have the builders in the "Ask HN" thread, heads down, creating brilliant tools like Tela, operating on pure technological optimism.4:38 On the other, you have this deep, simmering anger that’s starting to boil over into real-world action.4:43 And in the middle, you have a company like Apple, offering a third way with Gemma4—a future where AI is a personal tool, not a centralized authority.4:50 It’s a technological solution to what is increasingly feeling like a political problem.4:55 The question is whether that’s enough.4:56 So this week, we saw the two futures laid bare.4:59 One is a decentralized, personal, almost utopian vision of AI, represented by Apple’s Gemma4 and the individual creators in the "Ask HN" thread.5:06 It’s a future where technology empowers the user.5:08 Where you control your own data, your own models, your own destiny.5:11 It’s the story the tech industry loves to tell about itself.5:14 And then there's the other future.5:16 The one that leads to a CEO’s home being attacked.5:18 Not because of the technology itself, but because of who controls it and who profits from it.5:22 It’s a future born from the fear that AI is just the final cog in a machine designed to concentrate wealth and power.5:28 That all this incredible progress will only serve to make the powerful more so, and leave everyone else behind.5:33 What became clear this week on Hacker News is that the debate is no longer just about AI.5:38 It’s about fairness.5:39 It’s about power.5:39 The code and the models will continue to advance at a blistering pace.5:43 That’s a given.5:43 The real, urgent question now is about the systems we plug them into.5:47 The realization dawning on the community isn't that we need to regulate the tech.5:51 It's that we need to fix the society the tech is inheriting.
