0:00 A new post titled "Passkeys are a trap" just rocketed past six hundred points on Hacker News, arguing the very technology meant to save us from passwords is a Trojan horse for user control.0:13 It’s a huge claim, and it ties directly into what we were talking about last week — the cleverest minds in tech are pushing the limits, but the real question is who gets to control what they build.0:27 This week is all about that tension, the silent tug-of-war over who holds the keys to your digital life.0:35 So, let's get into the headlines, because it was a busy week.0:39 The biggest story, after that passkey debate, is a piece called "Fingerprints are the new cookies." And yeah, it’s exactly what it sounds like.0:49 A developer named Roy Fish wrote a brilliant, and frankly unsettling, breakdown of how your browser is being used to create a unique, persistent identifier for you.1:01 This isn't about cookies you can delete.1:04 This is about your screen resolution, your installed fonts, your time zone...1:10 all collected into a "fingerprint" so unique that ad companies can track you across the web, even if you're using a VPN or private browsing mode.1:20 He even built a demo that assigned his browser a permanent nickname, "Stubborn Camel," that he just couldn't shake.1:28 It’s a stark reminder that the surveillance economy is always evolving.1:33 Then there's the story that feels both inevitable and deeply personal.1:38 A developer posted an essay titled, "Fable Took My Job." Fable is the name of the AI tool their company used.1:46 And the post is this raw, honest account of being laid off, not because they were a bad engineer, but because an AI model was just...1:56 cheaper.1:56 The author makes a crucial point, saying, “‘AI took my job’ is far more fun to say than ‘AI contributed to my role being eliminated.’” They acknowledge the AI lacks nuance, foresight, and the kind of judgment that comes from experience, but for the business, the cost savings won out.2:17 It’s a story we’re going to see a lot more of.2:20 And right on cue, Andrej Karpathy, one of the most respected minds in AI, dropped a tweet that perfectly explains the context for that job loss.2:30 He says the gap in understanding what large language models can actually do is widening, fast.2:37 He breaks the world into four groups.2:40 Group one is huge, maybe six billion people, who have barely interacted with these systems.2:46 Group two is a billion or two casual users, who see them as fun chatbots.2:52 Group three is about twenty million professionals—coders, writers, analysts—who are getting massive productivity boosts.3:00 And then there's group four.3:02 Maybe five thousand elite, internal users at the big labs who are driving frontier research and, get this, cyber operations.3:11 His point is that what most of us see is already miles behind what's really happening.3:17 On a more immediate, practical note, there was a bit of a panic in the developer community.3:24 A new release of a popular JavaScript library called Zod, version 4.6.6, is under suspicion for a potential malware compromise.3:33 The discussion is full of people urging caution, saying don't upgrade yet, wait for confirmation.3:40 It’s a classic supply-chain security scare, and a good reminder of how fragile the software ecosystem can be.3:48 But it’s not all doom and gloom.3:50 A fantastic article made the rounds asking, "Will Linux phones become a viable alternative to the Android/iOS duopoly?" The author, Amos Batto, gives a really clear-eyed history of the attempts so far—things like the PinePhone and the Librem 5—and why they fizzled out due to slow hardware and buggy software.4:12 But he argues there's renewed hope.4:15 The hardware is getting better, the software is maturing, and here's the kicker: Motorola just announced it will start selling high-end phones with GrapheneOS pre-installed in 2027.4:28 That's a major manufacturer dipping a toe into the privacy-focused, open-source world.4:34 It’s not going to kill the duopoly, but it could finally create a sustainable niche for people who want to own and control their own devices.4:44 And speaking of owning things, two last quick hits that are just delightful.4:50 First, the classic nineties real-time strategy game, Total Annihilation, has been completely rebuilt by the community for modern computers.5:00 It’s a huge nostalgia trip for a lot of us, and a beautiful example of software preservation.5:06 And second, in a story that could only come from the internet, The Onion is on an archive hunt.5:13 They're trying to find missing physical print issues from 1988 all the way to 2013 to complete their digital archive, and they put out a call for people to check their attics and basements.5:27 It's just a wonderful, quirky quest to preserve a piece of comedy history.5:32 Okay, so let's go back to those two big stories, because they are so deeply connected.5:38 Passkeys and browser fingerprinting.5:41 On the surface, they seem different—one is about logging in, the other is about being tracked.5:48 But they are both about the same fundamental thing: your identity online, and who gets to define and control it.5:56 Let's start with passkeys.5:57 The promise is amazing, right?6:00 No more remembering a hundred different passwords.6:03 You just use your face, your fingerprint, your phone's lock screen...6:08 and you're in.6:09 It's more secure, it's more convenient.6:12 So why is this post "Passkeys are a trap" getting so much attention?6:17 The author, who goes by The Hack, makes a devastatingly simple point.6:22 "Unlike with any other kind of login credential, you do not have ultimate control over your passkeys." Think about it.6:30 With a password, you know it.6:32 You can write it down, put it in any password manager you want, use it on any device.6:38 With a physical security key, like a YubiKey, you hold the physical object.6:44 The control is yours.6:45 But with passkeys, the key is generated and stored by your device or your platform.6:51 By Apple.6:52 By Google.6:53 By Microsoft.6:54 You can't see it, you can't export it, you can't back it up to a place of your own choosing.7:00 You are completely dependent on the platform provider.7:04 And if they decide to lock you out of your account, or if they go out of business, or if they decide to change the rules...7:13 your keys are gone.7:14 You're trusting the gatekeeper to always let you in.7:18 The author points to the FIDO Alliance, the group that promotes passkeys.7:23 It's a consortium of all the big names—Google, Apple, Amazon, Microsoft—plus governments, banks, and even intelligence agencies.7:32 But you know who's not really there?7:35 Consumer advocacy groups.7:37 It's an industry group creating an industry-friendly standard.7:41 So, where have we seen this before?7:44 This pattern of trading ownership for convenience?7:47 Uh, everywhere.7:49 It's the entire story of the last twenty years of tech.7:52 Remember buying software on a CD-ROM?7:55 You owned that disc.7:57 It was yours.7:57 You could install it, reinstall it, sell it.8:01 Then came Software as a Service—SaaS.8:03 Now you just rent access.8:05 You pay a monthly fee for Office 365 or Adobe Creative Cloud.8:09 It's always up to date, it's available everywhere, but you don't own a thing.8:15 The moment you stop paying, it's gone.8:18 And the company can change features, raise the price, or shut down your account at any time.8:24 Passkeys are the SaaS-ification of your identity.8:28 You're renting your own front door key from the landlord of the internet.8:33 The analogy holds because the power dynamic is identical.8:37 The platform gives you a service in exchange for control.8:41 Now, where does the analogy break?8:44 Well, a passkey isn't a single product like Microsoft Word.8:48 It's a protocol.8:49 But the implementations of that protocol, the things you actually use every day, are locked into those big platform ecosystems.8:58 So in practice, the lock-in is just as real.9:01 It's a subtle but profound shift in who has the power.9:05 And that brings us to the other side of the identity coin: browser fingerprinting.9:11 If passkeys are about who controls your front door, fingerprinting is about being followed down every street you walk.9:20 The article "Fingerprints are the new cookies" by Roy Fish is so good because it makes the technical details feel tangible.9:29 He shows how dozens of seemingly innocuous details about your browser—the exact list of fonts you have installed, the precise size of your browser window, your language settings, how your graphics card renders a specific image—can be combined to create an identifier that is shockingly unique to you.9:50 It's not one thing.9:51 It's the constellation of things.9:54 And it's incredibly stable.9:56 That's why his demo could keep calling his browser "Stubborn Camel" even after he cleared his cache, switched networks with a VPN, and went into incognito mode.10:07 The fingerprint remained.10:09 So, what's the pattern here?10:11 Where have we seen this before?10:13 This isn't like a cookie, which is like a name tag someone slaps on your jacket.10:19 You can see it, and you can rip it off.10:22 Fingerprinting is more like...10:24 being identified by your gait.10:26 By the unique way you walk, the rhythm of your steps, your posture.10:31 It’s not a single label, it’s a holistic pattern of behavior and characteristics.10:37 Someone who knows you well could spot you in a crowd from a hundred yards away, just by the way you move, even if you're wearing a different coat.10:47 That's what these tracking scripts are doing.10:51 They're learning your browser's "gait." The analogy is powerful because it captures the passive, involuntary nature of it.10:59 You're not actively giving up this information.11:03 You're just...11:04 browsing.11:04 You're just walking down the street.11:07 Now, where does the analogy break down?11:10 You could, with effort, change the way you walk.11:13 It would be difficult and unnatural, but possible.11:17 Changing your browser's fingerprint is WAY harder.11:20 You'd have to use specialized browsers that try to spoof this data, but doing so often breaks websites or just makes your fingerprint even more unique.11:31 It's a cat-and-mouse game where the mice are getting exhausted.11:36 And Roy Fish's article ends with the real punchline.11:39 He quotes someone looking at this tracking data and saying, "I look at all this data and I don’t see people.11:47 I see patterns...11:48 The crystal ball of the 21st century and it’s made of silicon!11:53 That’s the product." This isn't just about ads for shoes following you around.11:59 This is about building predictive models of population behavior, monetized by corporations and, as the article notes, potentially used by governments.12:09 It’s the raw material for a new kind of power.12:13 So what does it all add up to?12:15 You have one trend, passkeys, that asks you to voluntarily hand over control of your identity for convenience.12:23 And you have another trend, fingerprinting, that simply takes a copy of your identity without asking.12:30 Both roads lead to the same place: a world where you have less sovereignty, less privacy, and less control.12:38 This week really crystallized a conflict that’s been brewing for years.12:43 It's a battle over digital sovereignty.12:46 On one side, you have the forces of centralization and convenience—the big platforms offering you a seamless, easy life as long as you live inside their walled gardens and play by their rules.12:59 That's the world of passkeys controlled by your phone manufacturer, of AI tools that make management decisions, of ad networks that know you better than you know yourself.13:12 On the other side, you have these smaller, scrappier movements fighting for decentralization and control.13:19 That’s the dream of the Linux phone.13:22 It’s the spirit behind rebuilding an old game just because you can, keeping it alive outside of a corporate launcher.13:30 It’s the caution and skepticism of the developer community when a popular tool might be compromised.13:37 The big takeaway isn't that one side is winning.13:41 It's that the fight is happening on a new front.13:44 For twenty years, the big battles in tech were about the desktop, the browser, the mobile operating system.13:52 Those wars are mostly over.13:54 What this week sets up is the next great conflict.13:57 It won't be about which browser you use; it will be about whether that browser is a window to the world or a one-way mirror.14:06 The battleground is identity itself—the right to hold your own keys, and the right to walk through the digital world without being silently cataloged at every step.14:18 And that’s a fight that’s just getting started.
