0:00 The first Olympic games in ancient Greece had only one event… a short footrace.0:07 Last week we were chasing mystical foxes through the forests of Japan, but today, our journey takes us to a land of sunshine, blue water, and legendary heroes.0:24 Come with me to ancient Greece.0:27 Imagine a city of brilliant white buildings under a hot sun.0:33 This is Athens.0:34 The air smells like salt from the nearby sea and sweet from the olive groves.0:42 If you were there, you could sit in the shade and eat salty feta cheese with fresh bread.0:51 But today, Athens is not a happy place.0:55 Every year, the city must send seven young men and seven young women across the sea to the island of Crete.1:06 They are a tribute to the cruel King Minos.1:10 And they are sent into a giant, twisting maze called the Labyrinth, where they are never seen again.1:20 Because deep inside that maze lives a terrible monster.1:26 The Minotaur—half man, half bull.1:29 A brave young prince named Theseus sees the sadness in his city.1:36 He stands before his father, the king, and says, “I will go to Crete.1:43 I will be one of the seven.1:45 And I will defeat the Minotaur.” His father begged him not to go, but Theseus’s heart was full of courage.1:56 “If I return safely,” Theseus promised, “I will change the black sails of my ship to white sails.2:06 When you see the white sails, you will know I am alive.” So Theseus sailed across the sparkling blue Aegean Sea.2:17 When he arrived in Crete, he saw the magnificent palace of Knossos, a maze of rooms and corridors itself.2:28 There, he met the daughter of King Minos, Princess Ariadne.2:34 She saw the bravery in Theseus’s eyes and decided to help him.2:40 She secretly gave him two things.2:43 A sharp sword… and a simple ball of thread.2:48 “Tie one end to the entrance,” she whispered.2:52 “And unwind the thread as you walk.2:56 It will be your only way back out.” Theseus entered the dark, winding Labyrinth.3:04 It was quiet… too quiet.3:06 He held the thread tightly, his footsteps echoing on the stone floor.3:13 Deeper and deeper he went, until he heard it.3:18 A low, angry roar.3:20 The Minotaur!3:21 The beast charged, but Theseus was quick.3:25 He was clever.3:26 And he was very, very brave.3:29 He fought the monster and won.3:32 The terrible Minotaur was defeated.3:36 Now for the hard part.3:38 Getting out.3:39 But Theseus smiled.3:41 He simply turned and began to follow Ariadne’s thread, winding it back up as he went.3:50 It led him perfectly through the twists and turns, back to the sunlight.3:57 He gathered the other Athenians, and they raced to their ship, sailing for home as heroes.4:06 But in all the excitement… Theseus forgot his promise.4:12 He forgot to change the sails.4:15 Far away in Athens, his father stood on a high cliff, watching the sea for his son’s return.4:24 He saw a ship on the horizon.4:27 He saw its sails were black.4:30 Believing his son was gone forever, the king fell into the sea in his grief.4:37 And from that day on, that beautiful, sparkling body of water has been called the Aegean Sea, named for a king who loved his son.4:50 Theseus returned a hero… but he also learned that even heroes must remember their promises.
