0:00 On June seventeenth, Donald Trump signed a peace deal with Iran during dinner at the Palace of Versailles.0:08 Last week, in our look at global realignments, we tracked the tense standoffs redrawing the world map.0:16 Today, one of those standoffs just ended, while another one escalated dramatically.0:22 The entire game just changed.0:24 Here’s what else is moving.0:26 The United Kingdom just put its full weight into crippling Russia’s war economy.0:33 At the G7 summit, the PM announced new sanctions against Russia’s shadow fleet—twenty-seven vessels, most of them oil tankers, were just added to the list.0:45 But this isn't just paper.0:47 For the first time, Royal Marines boarded a shadow fleet tanker, the SMYRTOS, in international waters, seized it, and arrested the captain.0:57 To make the point sharper, Britain’s sanctions office just slapped Sabre Global Technologies with a one million pound fine for helping a Russian airline bypass sanctions.1:11 The message is clear: the gloves are off.1:14 The quiet economic war just got very loud.1:17 Meanwhile, a crack is appearing in Europe’s unified front on China.1:22 Lithuania’s new prime minister-designate just publicly called for restoring relations with Beijing.1:30 This is the same Lithuania that went head-to-head with China over Taiwan.1:36 Now, they’re signaling a retreat, a pivot back to pragmatism.1:40 This isn't just about one small Baltic state.1:44 You need to watch this as a test case for whether European solidarity can survive economic pressure from Beijing.1:53 And while the UK tightens the screws on Moscow, the EU just added its own ‘mini’ package of sanctions.2:00 Another thirty-four individuals and forty-seven entities, many tied to that same shadow fleet.2:08 It’s smaller than the UK’s move, but it shows the direction of travel is the same.2:14 The West is building a wall of sanctions, brick by painful brick.2:19 Okay, let's go back to that dinner at Versailles.2:23 The signing of the Islamabad Memorandum between the U.S.2:27 and Iran is the single biggest diplomatic reversal of the year.2:32 Just one year ago, Trump was calling Iran the most destructive force in the Middle East.2:39 His administration was piling on sanctions, even as back-channel talks sputtered along.2:46 Iran rejected a U.S.2:47 proposal as recently as early June, insisting its right to enrich uranium was non-negotiable.2:55 It looked like total deadlock.2:57 So what changed?2:58 War.2:58 Months of direct and proxy conflict brought both sides to a place where a bad deal looked better than the alternative.3:08 The memorandum isn't a grand peace treaty.3:11 It’s a ceasefire.3:12 It puts a temporary moratorium on Iranian uranium enrichment.3:17 It begins talks over sanctions relief.3:20 And critically, it signals the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.3:25 Here's the turn.3:26 This wasn’t a diplomatic masterstroke born in a think tank.3:31 This was battlefield triage.3:33 Both sides were bleeding.3:35 Trump needed to show a win, to calm oil markets roiled by the conflict.3:40 Iranian President Pezeshkian needed to deliver some kind of economic relief to a population crushed by sanctions and war footing.3:50 So they signed.3:51 Trump in France, Pezeshkian in Tehran.3:54 A remote signature to end a very real war.3:58 This is the new shape of diplomacy.4:00 It’s not about trust or shared values.4:03 It’s about leverage and exhaustion.4:06 The United States just demonstrated it can pivot from maximum pressure to a pragmatic deal overnight if the conditions are right.4:16 So you have two colossal shifts happening at once.4:20 In the Middle East, a hot war is being cooled through a grudging, transactional peace.4:27 In Europe, an economic war is being heated up with boardings on the high seas and multi-million-pound fines.4:35 There is no single doctrine.4:37 There is no grand strategy.4:39 There is only the hard calculus of power, applied differently in every theater.4:45 The world didn't get safer last week.4:48 It just got more complicated.
