0:00 Seventeen banks across Kazakhstan, Armenia, and the United Arab Emirates just had their access to the SWIFT messaging system severed.0:10 They aren't Russian.0:12 But they are Moscow's financial lifeline.0:15 In episode 42, we asked if the G7 still had the political will to truly tighten the screws on Russia's war economy.0:25 Today, in Brussels, we got the answer.0:28 This wasn't the only move on the board.0:31 Far from it.0:32 In South America, Brasília and New Delhi just signed a pact that goes far beyond diplomatic handshakes.0:40 They're not just trading more soybeans and pharmaceuticals.0:45 They are officially co-developing military drone technology and, critically, sharing satellite intelligence.0:54 This is the architecture of a new power bloc taking shape, and it's happening without Washington or Beijing in the room.1:04 Meanwhile, in Asia, Japan's Prime Minister Kishida just concluded a surprise two-day trip to Manila.1:12 The result?1:13 A new two-billion-dollar maritime security initiative with the Philippines and, for the first time, Vietnam.1:22 This isn't just about a few new patrol boats.1:25 It's about funding a network of coastal radar installations and embedding Japanese advisors in joint naval command centers.1:35 Tokyo is no longer just a passenger in the American security alliance.1:41 It’s becoming a driver.1:43 And a quick hit from Riyadh.1:45 Those much-hyped post-Brexit trade talks between the United Kingdom and the Gulf Cooperation Council?1:54 They've collapsed.1:55 The sticking point wasn't oil or tariffs.1:58 It was data.1:59 The GCC demanded British financial firms store all customer data locally.2:05 London refused.2:07 The talks are not paused.2:09 They are over.2:10 But let's go back to Brussels.2:12 Let's go back to those seventeen banks.2:15 Because what happened today is a fundamental shift in the economic war against Russia.2:22 For two years, sanctions have been a game of whack-a-mole.2:27 The West blacklists a Russian bank, and Moscow simply reroutes its payments through a friendly institution in a neighboring country.2:38 It was leaky.2:39 It was inefficient.2:41 Today, the G7 stopped playing that game.2:44 These are secondary sanctions.2:46 That means the United States and the European Union are now targeting non-Russian companies for doing business with Russia.2:56 It's a high-risk, high-reward strategy.2:59 The reward is the potential to finally, truly isolate Russia's defense sector from the global components it needs to build missiles, tanks, and drones.3:12 The supply chain runs on dollars and euros, even if the final transaction is in rubles or yuan.3:20 Cut off the access, and you starve the machine.3:23 But the risk is enormous.3:25 You are telling sovereign nations like Kazakhstan—a country trying to balance its relationship with Russia, China, and the West—that they have to choose a side.3:38 You risk pushing these neutral, or semi-neutral, states directly into Moscow's or Beijing's arms.3:46 The American Treasury Secretary was on the phone with finance ministers in Astana and Yerevan all weekend.3:55 The message was clear: we will give you support to decouple, but if you don't, you are next.4:03 This isn't a negotiation.4:05 It's an ultimatum.4:06 So what is different today?4:08 Yesterday, the lines were drawn between major powers.4:13 Between Washington and Moscow.4:15 Between Beijing and the West.4:17 Today, the battleground has shifted.4:20 The new front line runs through the accounting departments of mid-sized banks in Central Asia.4:28 It runs through technology labs in São Paulo and Bangalore.4:33 While the old alliances are forcing countries to pick a side with threats and sanctions, new partnerships are being built voluntarily on shared interests.4:45 The great power competition isn't just a tug of war anymore.4:50 It’s the shattering of the rope itself.
