0:00 The ink is barely dry on a U.S.-Iran peace deal, announced just hours before President Trump meets his G-7 counterparts.0:09 In episode fifty, we talked about power shifts at sea.0:13 Today, those shifts just hit land, hard.0:16 This isn't just a truce; it's a tectonic event rearranging the entire Middle East, and it was timed for maximum political impact.0:25 Here's what else is moving.0:27 While one hand offers a deal to Tehran, the other is signing new sanctions.0:33 President Trump just enacted Executive Order 14404, a fresh set of financial punishments targeting specific actors.0:42 The White House isn't saying who, exactly.0:45 But at the same time, the United Kingdom just expanded its own sanctions regime against Russia.0:52 This is a coordinated squeeze play.0:55 It tells you the West can still act in concert when it wants to, even as its leaders compete for the spotlight.1:03 And they are competing.1:05 You've seen the photos from the G-7 summit.1:08 President Macron shaking hands with President Trump.1:12 These aren't just pleasantries.1:14 They are frantic, last-minute efforts to project unity on the world stage.1:20 But behind the smiles, every leader is calculating.1:23 The Iran deal gives Trump a major win to brandish.1:27 Macron is trying to position Europe as a separate, balancing power.1:32 The handshakes are easy.1:34 Agreeing on who pays for what is not.1:37 Meanwhile, the oil markets are not celebrating.1:40 The question everyone is asking is when this Iran deal brings down prices at the pump.1:47 The answer from analysts is blunt: not this month.1:51 The deal is too fragile, the details too vague.1:54 The risk premium is still baked in.1:57 And finally, the oldest alliance in the region is showing its age.2:02 A new essay in Foreign Policy puts it starkly: the U.S.-Israel alliance isn't special anymore.2:09 The Iran deal is seen in Jerusalem as a betrayal.2:12 It pushes one of America's closest allies to the sidelines, right when its own conflict with Lebanon is heating up.2:21 This is the dangerous ripple effect.2:24 Okay.2:24 Let's go back to that U.S.-Iran deal.2:27 Because what we know is dwarfed by what we don't.2:31 What we know is this: it's a truce.2:33 A memorandum of understanding.2:36 A cease-fire.2:36 The immediate threat of a wider war has receded.2:40 For now.2:41 President Trump gets to walk into the G-7 summit and declare a victory for diplomacy.2:47 Tehran gets breathing room.2:49 That was the easy part.2:51 Here's the problem.2:52 The deal is a house of cards built on an active volcano.2:56 The single most important issue—Iran's nuclear program—remains completely unresolved.3:03 It's not in the text.3:04 It's been kicked down the road.3:07 This isn't a resolution.3:09 It's an agreement to stop shooting at each other while arguing about the fundamentals later.3:15 And "later" is a very dangerous word in the Middle East.3:20 Two groups can tear this down before the ink is even certified.3:24 First, the Iran hawks in Washington.3:27 They see this deal as appeasement.3:30 They believe Trump gave away leverage for a photo-op, and they are already whispering that into the president's ear.3:38 He feels those criticisms most keenly.3:41 He could reverse course on a whim if he feels he looks weak.3:46 The second, and more immediate, threat is Israel.3:49 Israeli strikes on Lebanon are continuing.3:53 If those strikes hit Iranian assets or proxies in a significant way, Tehran will be forced to respond.4:00 If they respond, the truce is dead.4:03 The entire deal could unravel not in Washington or Tehran, but in the skies over southern Lebanon.4:10 It could happen tonight.4:12 It could happen tomorrow.4:14 So what you're watching is not a peace process.4:17 It's a high-wire act.4:19 Trump is betting that a temporary calm will be enough to change the political conversation and maybe, just maybe, lower oil prices eventually.4:30 Iran is betting it can wait him out, getting sanctions relief without giving up its nuclear ambitions.4:37 Everyone is celebrating the deal.4:40 Nobody is reading the fine print.4:42 Because there is no fine print.4:45 That's the point.4:46 This deal doesn't signal peace.4:48 It signals a shift in strategy.4:51 The conflict with Iran is moving from the military domain to the diplomatic one.4:57 For now.4:57 The pressure hasn't vanished.4:59 It's just changed its shape.
