About this episode In this week's edition of This Week in Tech, we dive into the latest app updates and hardware releases, critically assessing whether these new products address genuine needs or are just shiny distractions. With an enthusiastic yet honest approach, we explore the design, functionality, and potential impact of each drop, helping you decide what's worth your attention and investment. Stay informed and see through the hype with our straightforward reviews.
0:00 OpenAI's new top model, GPT-5.6 Sol, costs thirty dollars to generate a million tokens of text.0:06 That one number tells you almost everything you need to know about where the AI industry is headed.0:13 Last week we were looking at wild new AI gadgets, but this week the story isn't about a new device you can hold; it's about the invisible plumbing and the new economics making it all run.0:27 So here’s the landscape.0:28 While OpenAI was setting new price tiers, Microsoft just upgraded GitHub Copilot to perform autonomous, multi-file edits across an entire repository.0:39 This isn't just better autocomplete; this is an agent that can execute complex migrations on its own.0:46 At the same time, Google’s Gemini platform quietly crossed nine hundred and fifty million monthly active users, embedding itself so deeply into Chrome, Android, and Workspace that for many, it’s just… how the internet works now.1:02 And it’s not just software.1:04 We saw a YC-backed startup called ProvenMetal launch to tackle PCB lead times, trying to rebuild domestic hardware supply chains.1:13 Antmicro dropped a fully open-source Thunderbolt-to-dual-10GbE adapter, and new AI workstations from NVIDIA and HP are putting what was once data-center power onto a desktop.1:26 Oh, and Motorola patented a smartwatch that unfolds into a phone.1:30 Okay, so let's pull on that thread connecting OpenAI's pricing with Microsoft's new Copilot Workspace.1:38 Because that's the real story.1:40 For years, the AI race was about one thing: building the biggest, most powerful, flagship model.1:47 A single model to rule them all.1:49 What we saw this week is the end of that era.1:52 OpenAI didn't just release one model; they released a family.1:56 You’ve got Sol, the expensive frontier model for heavy-duty reasoning.2:01 Then there's Terra, for balanced daily use, and Luna, for speed and low-cost tasks.2:07 They're telling you to "match the model to the task, not the benchmark headline." Where have we seen this before?2:15 It's the history of computing.2:18 You had the mainframe era, where one giant, expensive machine did everything.2:23 Then came minicomputers, then workstations, then desktops, then laptops.2:28 Each one was a different tier of power, price, and purpose.2:32 This is that moment for AI.2:34 It's no longer a monolithic 'brain in the cloud.' It's a specialized set of tools.2:40 And that’s exactly what enables something like Microsoft’s new Copilot Workspace.2:46 Those autonomous repository-wide migrations?2:49 You don't need the thirty-dollar reasoning model for that.2:53 You need a cheaper, faster model that’s reliable at a specific, repetitive task.2:59 AI is moving from being a product to being a UTILITY, priced and deployed just like electricity or water.3:06 Now, here's where the analogy gets tricky.3:09 Take that open-source adapter from Antmicro.3:12 It's a beautiful piece of engineering for a specific need.3:17 But as one commenter pointed out online, what good is an open-source design if it relies on controller chips that are basically impossible for a hobbyist to buy?3:28 True democratization isn't just about open blueprints; it's about accessible parts.3:34 The industry is building these incredible, tiered systems, but access to the fundamental layers isn't always guaranteed.3:42 So what does it all add up to?3:45 The most profound innovations are starting to become invisible.3:49 They’re not happening in a new device you unbox, but in the background—in pricing tiers, in developer tools, in the agent that refactors your code while you're getting coffee.4:01 This week sets up a future where the most powerful tech isn't the thing you show off, but the thing you rely on without even thinking.4:11 The era of AI as a novelty is over.4:14 The era of AI as infrastructure has begun.
