0:00 Max Verstappen lost fifty-seven kilometers per hour of speed on a straightaway… while his foot was flat on the throttle.0:14 Just last week we were talking about how the new 2026 regulations felt fragile, but this is something else entirely.0:27 This is a crisis.0:29 The footage from the Japanese Grand Prix practice went viral, and for good reason.0:39 It showed Verstappen, at full throttle, suddenly slowing down as if he'd hit an invisible wall.0:50 This is the reality of a technique the teams are calling "super clipping." The new power units have such a restrictive limit on how much energy they can recharge per lap that drivers are now forced to harvest electricity on the straights, without braking, just to have enough power for the full lap.1:26 So they’re flooring it… while the car is actively trying to slow itself down.1:35 It looks bizarre, and frankly, it's dangerous.1:40 The FIA saw the clips, saw the uproar, and immediately panicked.1:48 They just announced a rule change mid-weekend, reducing the permitted energy recharge in qualifying from nine megajoules down to eight.2:04 A band-aid on a bullet wound.2:07 And while the governing body is rewriting its own rules on the fly, the pecking order on track is getting completely scrambled.2:22 Remember how McLaren had a disastrous start to the season?2:29 Well, Oscar Piastri just topped Practice Two at Suzuka.2:35 He was faster than both Mercedes drivers, Kimi Antonelli and George Russell.2:44 Which is especially wild because, get this, Piastri hasn't even started a race yet this year because of crashes and technical failures.3:00 Now, here’s the turn.3:03 After the session, George Russell tells the media, "We're not as far ahead as some think." Nobody believes him.3:16 This is classic F1 politics.3:19 We've seen this playbook before—think Brawn GP in 2009.3:26 When you have a massive advantage, you don't brag about it.3:33 You downplay it.3:35 You act concerned.3:37 You do everything you can to stop the FIA from looking too closely at your car, especially when there are already backroom talks about the legality of that W17.3:56 Mercedes got the rules right, and now their main job is to hide just how right they got them.4:07 So what we have is a sport where the rules are so fundamentally broken that drivers are slowing down at full speed, and the team that is actually fastest is pretending to be slow to avoid punishment.4:30 It’s a total inversion of what racing is supposed to be.4:37 And on the other side of the garage?4:41 You have a team like Aston Martin, Honda’s official works partner, completely lost.4:51 Two races, two retirements for both cars.4:56 Lance Stroll said it perfectly: "Everyone's frustrated.5:02 It's not the way we want to go racing." This weekend in Japan isn't just a home race for Honda; it's a stress test for the entire 2026 experiment.
