About this episode
Your weekly insider update: race results, team politics, breaking news, and what’s next in Formula 1
0:00
Red Bull’s team principal just publicly confirmed a secret succession plan at his biggest rival, McLaren.
0:07
That’s not a rumor, that’s Laurent Mekies, on the record, stating that McLaren’s current Team Principal Andrea Stella is effectively on a timer, with his replacement already inside the building.
0:20
Last week, in Episode nine, we talked about how the new era of F1 politics is less about back-room whispers and more about public knife fights.
0:30
Well, Laurent Mekies just brought a bazooka to that knife fight.
0:35
This isn't just paddock gossip anymore; it's a strategic, public destabilization campaign.
0:41
And it is working.
0:42
Okay, let's sweep the rest of the grid, because while McLaren is dealing with a palace coup, Mercedes is dealing with a civil war.
0:51
In Canadian Grand Prix sprint qualifying today, George Russell put his car on pole.
0:57
A fantastic lap.
0:58
Who was second?
0:59
His rookie teammate, Kimi Antonelli, who happens to be leading him in the World Championship by twenty points.
1:07
Russell is saying all the right things, telling the press the points gap "means nothing at this stage of the season" and there’s "no need to panic at all." Which, in driver-speak, means he is absolutely panicking.
1:21
He’s referencing his old F-two season where he came back from a deficit, but this isn't F-two, and Antonelli isn't just any rookie.
1:30
Mercedes has adapted to the two-thousand-and-twenty-six regulations better than anyone, and they have two drivers who want to be number one.
1:40
This is the story to watch.
1:42
Right behind them on the sprint grid?
1:45
The two McLarens.
1:46
Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri locked out the second row, P-three and P-four.
1:51
Lando said it was the first time all weekend he felt "genuinely confident" in the car.
1:57
Which is great for him.
1:59
It’s probably less great for his Team Principal Andrea Stella, who’s trying to focus on race strategy while another team's boss is telling the world he’s a lame duck.
2:10
The timing of Mekies’ comments was not an accident.
2:14
It was designed to hit right when McLaren was starting to look strong on track.
2:19
Maximum distraction.
2:21
Maximum damage.
2:22
And speaking of damage, where is Red Bull in all this?
2:25
You know, the team that used to dominate everything?
2:29
Their team principal is busy playing 4D chess with McLaren's leadership chart, maybe because his own team is in shambles on the track.
2:38
Max Verstappen is currently seventh.
2:41
Seventh!
2:41
In the driver's standings, with just twenty-six points.
2:45
By this time in previous seasons, he’d have that many wins.
2:49
Charles Leclerc at Ferrari put his finger on it.
2:53
He said with these new cars, if you're not "exactly optimised, you lose a lot of performance." He pointed directly at Red Bull’s early-season struggles as proof.
3:04
It’s not just about having a fast car in testing anymore; it’s about understanding a razor-thin operating window, weekend after weekend.
3:13
And right now, Red Bull has lost the manual.
3:16
Meanwhile, over at Haas, Team Principal Ayao Komatsu is dealing with a different kind of media firestorm.
3:23
Rumors were swirling about a fallout with his driver, Esteban Ocon.
3:28
Komatsu’s response, and I’m quoting here, was to call the reports "absolute bulls***." He went on to say, "Zero foundation whatsoever...
3:38
How is that journalism?" You can feel the frustration.
3:41
Ocon himself called the experience "almost like bullying." It’s a reminder that in this paddock, words can be weapons, whether they're true or not.
3:51
A rumor can destabilize a driver and a team just as effectively as a bad setup.
3:57
Finally, in the "you-should-have-known-better" category, the FIA fined Racing Bulls thirty-thousand euros.
4:04
Why?
4:05
Because when Liam Lawson’s car failed in practice, the marshals couldn't move it.
4:10
The clutch disengagement system—a safety feature designed specifically for this situation—didn't work as designed.
4:18
It caused a red flag, and the stewards’ report noted this was a "serious matter." The kicker?
4:25
The FIA’s technical delegate, Jo Bauer, had already warned Racing Bulls about this exact issue.
4:31
So they got a thirty-thousand euro fine, with twenty-thousand of it suspended, which is basically a warning shot.
4:39
Fix it, or the next one will hurt more.
4:42
So let's go back.
4:43
Let's go back to the story that really defines this weekend, and maybe this entire season.
4:49
Laurent Mekies, the Red Bull Team Principal, throwing a grenade into the McLaren motorhome.
4:55
This is so much more than just trash talk.
4:58
We have to ask: where have we seen this before?
5:02
And honestly?
5:02
We haven't.
5:03
Not like this.
5:04
This isn't a driver trying to get a psychological edge.
5:08
This is a team principal from one organization systematically dismantling the leadership of another, in public.
5:16
It’s like something out of an eighties corporate raider movie.
5:20
This is the T.
5:21
Boone Pickens approach to Formula One.
5:24
You don't just try to outperform your rival's stock; you initiate a hostile takeover, or in this case, you create the conditions for a hostile takeover by obliterating the current CEO's authority.
5:37
Let's break down what Mekies actually did.
5:40
He went to the media and confirmed that a man named Gianpiero Lambiase—who currently works at McLaren—has a clause in his contract that guarantees he will be promoted to Team Principal by two-thousand-and-twenty-eight.
5:55
Mekies didn't say "I think" or "I've heard." He said, and I quote, "Lambiase will become the team principal there." It’s a statement of fact.
6:05
He's weaponizing a piece of information that was supposed to be a secret.
6:10
Now, think about the effect of that.
6:13
If you are Andrea Stella, the current Team Principal, what does that make you?
6:18
A lame duck.
6:19
Every decision you make is now viewed through the lens of "well, the next guy will probably change it." Every engineer you talk to, every sponsor you meet, they’re all thinking it.
6:31
How can you lead with authority when your rival’s boss has just announced your expiration date to the entire world?
6:39
McLaren CEO Zak Brown can deny it all he wants, he can talk about stability, but the seed has been planted.
6:47
The damage is done.
6:48
The goal here isn't just to be annoying.
6:51
The goal is to force McLaren to waste energy.
6:54
Instead of focusing one-hundred percent on beating Mercedes, now they have to hold emergency meetings.
7:01
They have to manage internal morale.
7:03
Andrea Stella has to answer questions about his own job security in every single press conference.
7:10
It’s brilliant.
7:11
And it’s brutal.
7:12
And this brings us to the other major power struggle, the one happening at Mercedes.
7:18
Because it’s the perfect mirror image.
7:21
At McLaren, the fight is external, a political attack from the outside.
7:26
At Mercedes, the fight is purely internal.
7:29
This isn't a new pattern.
7:30
This is THE pattern in Formula One.
7:33
When one team gets the regulations this right, their only real rival is the person in the other car.
7:40
We saw it with Senna and Prost at McLaren.
7:43
We saw it with Hamilton and Rosberg at Mercedes just a decade ago.
7:47
And we are seeing it again with George Russell and Kimi Antonelli.
7:52
George Russell is a proven race winner, a top-tier talent.
7:56
He was supposed to be the one to lead Mercedes into this new era.
8:00
And then this kid, Antonelli, shows up.
8:03
Skips F-two, gets thrown into the deepest end imaginable, and is… leading the World Championship.
8:10
After Canada, the standings are Antonelli on one-hundred points, Russell on eighty.
8:15
So when George says the twenty-point gap "means nothing," what he's really saying is that he knows he's on the ropes.
8:24
He’s trying to convince himself as much as the media.
8:27
His pole position in the sprint is a huge statement.
8:31
It’s him drawing a line in the sand and saying, "I'm still here." But the pressure is immense.
8:37
Every single session, every qualifying lap, every race, is a direct comparison.
8:43
There's nowhere to hide.
8:45
And this is the beautiful, terrible dynamic of a top team.
8:49
For McLaren, the enemy is Red Bull’s political machine.
8:52
For Mercedes, the enemy is in the garage next door.
8:56
One is a fight for power and stability.
8:59
The other is a fight for glory and supremacy.
9:02
The McLaren situation is about who gets to sit on the throne.
9:06
The Mercedes situation is about who gets to wear the crown.
9:10
Both of these conflicts are sucking all the oxygen out of the paddock.
9:15
And they both show that the two-thousand-and-twenty-six regulations didn't just reset the cars; they reset the nature of the fight.
9:24
So what does this week set up?
9:26
It sets up a season defined by internal conflict.
9:29
On Sunday, we'll see if George Russell's sprint pole translates into a real challenge against his teammate, or if Antonelli continues his rookie rampage.
9:40
We'll see if McLaren can shut out the noise and convert their qualifying pace into a result, or if Mekies' political bomb has already done its job.
9:50
The battles on the track are now just one front in a much larger war.
9:55
It's a war fought in press releases, in contract clauses, and in the space between two teammates sharing a debrief.
10:03
The 2026 season isn't just a race for the championship; it's a battle for the soul of what it means to be a Formula 1 team.
10:12
And right now, the politicians are winning.
