0:00 The president of the FIA is openly talking about changing the rules to keep Fernando Alonso in Formula 1.0:06 Last week we covered the usual mix of team politics and driver drama, but this is something else entirely — this is the sport’s governing body considering a move to help one specific driver and his future team.0:18 This week has been all about pressure, coming from all sides.0:22 Let's get the lay of the land.0:24 First, the big one.0:25 Mohammed Ben Sulayem, the FIA president, saw Fernando Alonso at the Italian Grand Prix and said the two-time champion looked "very sad" about Aston Martin's lack of performance.0:36 So he asked him, point blank, what the FIA could do to help.0:39 Ben Sulayem is now floating the idea of a "concession plan" to help Honda get its 2027 engine up to speed faster, all with the goal of giving Alonso a competitive car and keeping him in the sport.0:51 We'll come back to just how extraordinary — and dangerous — that is.0:55 Next up, at Mercedes, the pressure is building on George Russell.0:59 He has not beaten his rookie teammate, Kimi Antonelli, since the British Grand Prix back in July.1:05 This isn't just a string of bad luck.1:07 Antonelli just won the Italian Grand Prix at Monza after starting from NINETEENTH on the grid.1:13 He played a brilliant strategy, got a cheap pitstop under a virtual safety car, and overtook Russell in the closing stages.1:20 The narrative at Mercedes is shifting under their feet.1:24 Then there's Ferrari.1:25 Charles Leclerc is trailing his new teammate, Lewis Hamilton, by thirty-six points in the championship.1:31 According to former Ferrari race engineer Rob Smedley, it's not about the car.1:36 He's convinced that the "psychological pressure" of having a seven-time world champion in the other garage is causing Leclerc's inconsistent, error-prone season.1:46 He’s fifth in the standings, and the cracks are starting to show.1:49 Speaking of Lewis Hamilton, he’s creating pressure of his own, and not just in the garage.1:55 During practice for the Spanish Grand Prix this weekend, Carlos Sainz got on the radio absolutely furious with Hamilton's driving through Turn 12.2:04 His words were, "it's always the same.2:06 It's so dangerous." He said it would take "zero effort" for Lewis to move over.2:11 It's just a practice session, sure, but it speaks to the tension on track.2:15 And finally, a bit of technical perspective from the reigning champion.2:19 Max Verstappen was talking about the new 2026 cars, describing them as feeling "numb to your driver inputs." It’s a fascinating insight into the challenge of these new hybrid power units.2:31 He was actually saying this in the context of praising his new teammate, Liam Lawson, for adapting so quickly after being dropped into the Red Bull mid-season.2:40 Even for the best, these cars are a handful.2:43 So, what does it all add up to?2:45 It adds up to a paddock where the most intense battles aren't just happening on the track.2:50 They're happening inside drivers' heads, inside the garages, and now, even inside the FIA's headquarters.2:57 Let's start with the story that could reshape the entire grid.3:00 The FIA president, Mohammed Ben Sulayem, essentially offering to bend the rules for Fernando Alonso.3:06 This isn't just paddock gossip.3:08 This is the president, on the record, talking about a conversation he had with Alonso at Monza.3:14 He saw him looking "very sad" and said, and I'm quoting here, "Fernando, I understand that it's not acceptable that you are coming to your own country, and then now, after two times the world champion, you are in the last ." His solution?3:28 Ask Alonso what he wants.3:30 And what Alonso apparently wants, and what Honda needs for their 2027 entry with Aston Martin, is a leg up.3:36 So Ben Sulayem is now considering a "rules concession plan" to accelerate Honda's engine development.3:42 Now, where have we seen this before?3:44 This feels like a ghost from Formula 1's past.3:47 You can draw a line back to the Jean-Marie Balestre era in the eighties and early nineties, when the FIA presidency was notoriously interventionist and political.3:57 Or even the early two-thousands, when Ferrari enjoyed...4:00 let's call it a very close relationship with the governing body during the Schumacher years, complete with its own private test track and bespoke tire rules that just so happened to favor them.4:12 The pattern is the governing body deciding that the "show" requires a certain team or a certain driver to be at the front, and then finding ways to engineer that outcome.4:22 Here's where the analogy holds: the motivation is the same.4:26 Alonso is a massive star.4:27 He's a two-time champion, a household name.4:30 Losing him would be a blow to F1's global appeal, especially in the Spanish market where they're launching a brand new race in Madrid.4:38 Keeping him happy, and by extension keeping a giant manufacturer like Honda invested and competitive, makes business sense for the sport.4:46 The FIA isn't just a regulator; it's a promoter of the championship.4:50 But here's where the analogy breaks, and where this gets really dangerous.4:55 In the past, these things were often done behind closed doors, with nods and winks.5:00 To have the FIA president openly discussing this, to frame it as helping a "sad" driver, is...5:05 breathtakingly bold.5:07 It completely undermines the pretense of absolute sporting fairness.5:11 What do you think the bosses at Mercedes, Ferrari, or Renault-Alpine are thinking right now?5:16 They've spent hundreds of millions, even billions, developing their power units under a strict set of rules.5:23 Now the new kid, Honda, might get a special allowance just because their future star driver is unhappy with his current team?5:30 The potential fallout is huge.5:32 It creates a precedent where any struggling team or disgruntled star driver can go lobby the president for a personal favor.5:40 It punishes the teams that did their homework and got it right.5:43 And it puts Aston Martin and Honda in an awkward position.5:47 Do they accept the help and forever have an asterisk next to their success?5:51 Or do they refuse, and risk Alonso walking away in 2027 because the project isn't progressing fast enough?5:58 This isn't about helping a new entrant find their feet, like the token system was supposed to do.6:04 This is about retaining a single, specific personality.6:07 It's a move that prioritizes a star player over the integrity of the league.6:12 We see this in other sports — salary cap exemptions for designated players, rule changes to encourage more offense — but rarely is it so nakedly tied to the mood of one individual.6:22 Ben Sulayem might think he's saving a star.6:25 But he might be opening a Pandora's box that poisons the well for every other team on the grid.6:31 Now let's switch from political pressure to psychological pressure.6:35 Let's talk about Charles Leclerc at Ferrari.6:37 On the surface, it’s been a messy year.6:40 A few brilliant flashes, but mostly a season of costly mistakes and inconsistent pace.6:45 He's thirty-six points behind Lewis Hamilton, in the same car.6:49 And he's fifth in the championship, which is not where a Ferrari lead driver is supposed to be.6:54 The easy explanation is that he's just having an off year.6:58 But the insider take, the one coming from people like Rob Smedley who know the pressure of that team better than anyone, is that this is all about the man in the other car.7:08 Smedley is convinced this is the "psychological pressure of having somebody as good as Lewis next to him." And this is a classic pattern in Formula 1.7:17 A team's established star, the chosen one, suddenly finds their world turned upside down by the arrival of a legend.7:24 We saw this with Prost when Senna arrived at McLaren.7:27 We saw it with Vettel when Ricciardo arrived at Red Bull.7:31 And most famously, we saw it with Nico Rosberg when he had to go up against his childhood friend and rival, Lewis Hamilton, at Mercedes.7:39 That rivalry became so toxic it nearly broke the team.7:42 So where does the Leclerc-Hamilton situation fit in?7:45 What makes it different?7:47 The Hamilton-Rosberg battle was a war of equals, two drivers who had been competing their whole lives, finally in the same dominant car.7:55 It was explosive from the start.7:57 This feels different.7:58 It's quieter.7:59 It's more like a slow erosion.8:01 Hamilton didn't come into Ferrari kicking down the doors.8:04 He came in with the quiet confidence of a seven-time champion.8:08 He integrated with the team, he worked, and he just...8:11 delivered.8:12 Consistently.8:13 He's not necessarily wiping the floor with Leclerc in pure qualifying pace every weekend.8:18 But over a race distance, through strategy, through race craft, through sheer relentless consistency, he is grinding him down.8:26 Think about what that does to a driver's head.8:28 Leclerc has been Ferrari's golden boy for years.8:31 The hope of the Tifosi.8:33 The man who was going to bring the championship back to Maranello.8:37 He had the team built around him.8:39 Then, Lewis Hamilton arrives.8:40 And suddenly, every mistake you make isn't just a mistake anymore.8:44 It's a point of comparison.8:46 Every time you lock a brake and run wide, every time you get the strategy call wrong, you know that on the other side of the garage, the guy with seven titles probably wouldn't have done that.8:58 That's the pressure Smedley is talking about.9:00 It's not about a single on-track fight.9:03 It's about the constant, nagging presence of a benchmark you can't seem to meet.9:07 The thirty-six-point gap isn't just a number; it's a story of small failures accumulating over a season.9:14 A tenth lost in qualifying here, a sub-optimal strategy call there, a small mistake under pressure that costs a position.9:21 For Leclerc, the question is no longer just "can I win this race?".9:25 It's "can I even beat the guy in my own team?".9:28 And that's a much harder question to answer, especially when that guy is Lewis Hamilton.9:33 This is the crucible for Charles Leclerc.9:36 He either finds another level within himself to rise to this challenge, like Rosberg eventually did in 2016, or he risks becoming the clear number two in the team he was supposed to lead.9:47 He risks becoming the next Rubens Barrichello or Valtteri Bottas — a very talented driver, but ultimately a supporting act.9:54 This brings us back to the other Mercedes seat, where George Russell is facing a different version of the same problem.10:02 He was supposed to be the post-Hamilton leader.10:04 He weathered the storm of a difficult car, he established himself.10:08 And now, a rookie, Kimi Antonelli, shows up and starts beating him.10:12 Antonelli's win at Monza from nineteenth on the grid is the kind of stuff legends are made of.10:18 For Russell, it's a nightmare.10:20 The pressure isn't from a seven-time champion's legacy; it's from the raw, untamed speed of the next big thing.10:27 He’s gone from being the future to, potentially, yesterday’s news in the space of a few months.10:32 So you have Leclerc being squeezed by a legend from the past, and Russell being squeezed by a phenom from the future.10:39 It shows you there’s no safe harbor in Formula 1.10:42 The pressure is constant, and it comes from every direction.10:46 This week sets up a fascinating weekend at the new Madring circuit for the Spanish Grand Prix.10:52 It's a new track, billed as a proper driver's circuit, which means it should be a great equalizer.10:57 The Mercedes team principal has already said that Monza was an outlier because of its low-drag nature, and that Madrid will be a much tougher fight.11:06 This is where we'll see if Antonelli's form is real, or if it was a one-off.11:11 It’s where we’ll see if Leclerc can find a response to Hamilton on a track where neither has a historical advantage.11:18 But the biggest thread to follow isn't just on the track.11:21 It's in the political fallout from the FIA's proposed gift to Alonso and Honda.11:26 Every team principal, every engineer, every driver will be asked about it.11:31 The battle for fairness and the soul of the sport's regulations is now just as important as the battle for tenths of a second on a lap.11:39 The real story of Formula 1 is rarely just about who is fastest.11:43 It's about how people, teams, and even regulators react under extreme pressure.11:47 This week proved that more than ever.11:50 The pressure isn't just a byproduct of the sport; it IS the sport.
